nnsHunie By Red O'Donnell Mercury artist-writer Dave Dudley drove big trucks for small fees prior to making it big as a singer of truck-driving songs. A real "Rags to Riches" saga. The National Quartet Convention skeddcd for Nashville Oct. 6-10. Convention president J.D.

Summer predicts turnout of more than 25,000 for the 5- day event. Write P.O. Box 1190 for additional info. Tom Emberton, the Republican nominee in Kentucky's Nov. 2 election is a brother-in-law of Nashville songsmiths Jere Jan Crutchfield Emberton is married to the Crutchfield boys' sister Julia.

i award-winning compositions include "Dream on Little Dreamer," "Statute of a Fool" and "Sweet Misery." AH-in-the-Famlly? Singer-writer Liz Anderson signed with Epic label where her producer will be Glenn Sutton. Glenn is the husband of Lynn Anderson, Liz's singing daughter. Glenn is now in the enviable position of being able to tell his molhcr-in-law what to do, where to go, and when and how --in a recording studio, that is. An airmail stamp honoring the late Louis (Satchmo) Armstrong has been suggested by Ben Rosenthal of New York RCA's Guess Who group awarded platinum record for their "American Woman" LP.Aplatinum is what you get when you sell two million dollars worth of albums. While on tour of West Coast Bill Anderson visited the California Angels' baseball park at Anaheim and worked out with the Milwaukee Brewers before their game with the Angels.

Bill wore uniform No. 45 courtesy of his long-time friend Davey Bristol, manager of the Brewers. Anderson was a pretty fair country baseball player In Georgia prior to turning country music entertainer a field in which he's slightly better than pretty fair. Tennessee Gov. Winfield Dunn has been named an honorary member of Porter Wagoner's Wagonmasters band.

It's the first of a series of citations to be presented to "influential citizens who demonstrate through their thought and action their affection for or their awareness of the growing Importance of country music." Meanwhile Porter has resumed song-writing after an 18-year layoff. He wrote "Be A Little Quieter" and "Watching," titles of his current RCA single and all the tunes in his upcoming "Porter Wagoner Sings His Own Compositions" album. Explains Porter: "1 was Inspired and influenced to return to this activity by the example set by Dolly Parton (featured singer on his show) who, although she's only In her early 20's, already Is recognized as one of Nashville's most talented songwriters." West Coast scuttlebutt: Jimmy Dean buying a hotel in the Los Angeles area Front, boy! A couple of briefs about Perry Como: He renewed long term contract with RCA records and was hospitalized in Las Vegas for treatment of a kidney stone ailment. (Just a passing aggravation). Perry's okay now and plans to be in Nashville this fall for some country music recording.

Glossary Depi. When a country music artist is booked for several consecutive engagements at one place (city or club) it is referred to as a "sit down show" as opposed to one-nighters. The one-nighlers are the buffet line of entertaining. Right? Brenda Lee signed for guest shot on Flip Wilson's NBC-TVer. When Ringo Starr was here to cut his "Beautcoups of the met and became friends with Kitty Wells.

Now Ringo is writing the liner notes for the Queen of Country Music's next Decca LP "I'm a great admirer of Miss Kitty," says Ringo. RECORDS By JOE DAVENPORT "The voice of imperfect man must be heard. I nm born, can you use me?" Willie Nelson says during his new single-theme album that Is the story of a man from birth to death, and Nelson's tearful voice does an excellent job In getting the message driven across with soft lyrics in a collection of ballads under ihe title of YESTERDAY'S WINE (RCA LP-f5G8). Nelson's deft handling of meaningful words is aptly displayed in "Family Bible" and his mastery of the lyrics in "Summer of Roses" and "December Day" is unmatched. And when the troubador from Texas lays down the bitterness of reflection in the title tune, "Yesterday's Wine," there is no doubt left as to why Nelson is rapidly finding his niche in the Nashville hierarchism.

In summation, Nelson's latest album Is proof that after clawing his way upward, he has finally arrived at a point where he can just let his talented voice Trove that it wasn't by accident. This album is definitely a showcase for Nelson's talents, and he definitely shows that he Is capable to handiing the task. Whether or not you're a country and western fan doesn't count, this is one collection worthy of general listening, and listening again. Picked up another album and spread across the back was a picture of Solo's Cafe, 2422 Guadalupe adorned with a big placard urging one and all to cast a vote for the four candidates on the Bario Betterment ticket in last April's city election. On a bus bench was a sign asking votes for Mrs.

Ruby Cude. All five candidates lost, but the music on the enclosed disc is far from being a loser. This is the music of Antonio's Doug Sahm, alias Doug Saldana, The Rolling Stone's honorary Chicano of a award. This is the music of the Sir Douglas Quintet with OF DOUG SALDANA (Phillips PH-600-353). With the capable backing of Jack Barber and Jim Stalllngs on bass, John Perez on drums, Augie Meyer on organ and piano, Rocky Morales on tenor sax and Leonldas Baety on pcrcusion, Sir Doug lays out his lyrics with (hat happy mixture of "today" and country that he has found so suitable to his voice and style.

The only disappointment, and this is minor, is the lack of Sir Douglas' fine guitar work. However, this can be excused because he does such a commendable job i his voice, and that makes it all worthwhile, especially when his accompaniment achieves that subtle touch of the Zarzamora Street sound. For a pleasant work In today's idiom try Tom Everett's TORCHLIGHT ON IN OREGON (RCA LP- 4562). This is the work of another modern day technician worth perhaps more than a passing note. Then there's Andy Williams with LOVE STORY (KC-30497).

In this album is a collection of songs the golden-throated Williams has made good over the tube "I Think I Love You," "My Sweet Lord," "It's Impossible," "Candida" and touch of the country and western In "For the Good Times." This Is another must for Williams fans and those who like just good music. For the serious music listener, pianist Peter Serkin plays and Seiji Ozawa conducts the New Philharmonia Orchestra in a recording of Beethoven's piano version of the familiar violin CONCERTO IN OPUS 61a (RCA LSC-3152). This is the third such collaboration by Serkin and Ozawa and it is well worth the effort. The Opus 61a is a piano arrangement Beethoven did for Muzio Clement! a few years after it was written in 1806. There's a Glen Campbell Park in Glen Campbell, but nleiher is named for the performer of same name.

Fact is Glen Campbell didn't know the place existed until recently. Danny Davis will take his Nashville Brass to Europe and Japan next spring for a series of concerts. The good folks of the Bluegrass State will honor native son Pee Wee King with a "Pee Wee King Day in Kentucky" Oct. 23. The King-size celebration is scheduled for Madisonville.

(Reckon why the planners didn't set it for Pee Wee Valley, Thieves broke into singer Jack Green's apartment the other night and made off with in cash and jewelry. "If the robber was a fan of mine 1 wish he'd selected some less expensive souvenirs of his visit," laments Greene. There's a touch of irony to the death of Henry Haynes "Homer" of Homer and Jethro. His wife, Elizabeth, recently underwent a successful kidney transplant, after more than two years of a RADIO 860-SAN A I WKK OF AUG. 29-SEPT.
