Joseph R. McCarthy and the Democratic national committee using words like "lying" and "glaring falsehoods," were locked today in a battle over McCarthy's speech attacking Gov. Adlai Stevenson. The Wisconsin Republican Sunday called the committee's reply to his speech a "frantic lying spree' and said he will deliver a reply over a nationwide radio broadcast tonight MBS, 8:30 p. m.

EST. The committee statement, issued Saturday night, criticized McCar thy's radio-television speech last Monday as containing "at least 18 false statements, distortions or quotations wrenched from con text." In his talk from Chicago then, McCarthy said Illinois' Gov. Stevenson, the Democrats' candidate for president, "would continue the suicidal, Kremlin-dictated policies of this nation." McCarthy accused Stevenson of surrounding himself with advisers who, he said, have left-wing backgrounds. Democratic Chairman Stephen A. MJtchell, in a statement ac companying the committee's examination of McCarthy's speech, said researchers had spent four days compiling a documented "analysis of 18 errors." Mitchell said he wanted particularly to emphasize "eight glar ing falsehoods and distortions." McCarthy replied Sunday with a statement telephoned to Washington from Milwaukee, which said in part: "This is the most frantic lying spree upon which a presidential campaign has ever embarked.
