Democratic Convention Airs From New York political consultant, and Bill Movers reports on events at the rostrum. Four reporters Roger Mudd, Morton Dean, Dan Rather and Bob Shieffer cover activities on the convention floor.

For NBC, John Chancellor and David Brinkley share the honors as anchormen, and their four convention floor reporters are Tom Pettet. Catherine Mack-in, Tom Brokaw and John Hart. Other highlights on TV tonight: 8 p.m. Channel 7 Great Performances Leonard Bernstein leads the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a program of The Democratic National Convention 'Will be covered live from Madison Square Garden In New York City beginning tonight at 7 on Channels 3. 4 and 13 and at 7:30 on Channels 8, 10 and 11.

Opening ceremonies, welcoming speeches, temporary roll call, report by Democratic National Chairman Robert Strauss and keynote addresses by U.S. Sen. John Glenn of Ohio and U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan of Texas make up the schedule of events covered.

For CBS, Walter Cronkite is the anchorman, Eric Sevareid is analyst of the convention activities, Theodore White is neatly featured equipped with that sunwashed good looks California girls are famous for. No wonder another native, series star Bob Wagner, took one look at Sharon Gless, fifth-generation Californian if you please, and said "She's perfect" for the role of secretary Maggie on "Switch," Now the role of Maggie is purely window-dressing for the private-eye show. Maggie answers phones, peers around corners, pours coffee a standard routine for any sleuth series. If she's a good girl, Sharon Gless may have a few more lines next season after the general house-cleaning on the Tuesday night series, Sharon hopes secretary Maggie might be included in case-solving some time, play the eager-beaver who fouls up the caper only to be redeemed by a fluke at the end. 4 Jit -Vl Sophia Loren Teams Up With Gary Grant American music they've been playing on a seven-week Bicentennial tour, three of them in Europe. This concert was taped in London and opens with Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." It's followed by Gershwin's delightful "An American in Paris" and a moving performance of Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" and closes with a grand performance of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," with Bernstein doubling as conductor and soloist at the piano. 9 p.m. Channel 7 Piccadilly Circus "Man on the Rock." Extremely interesting fantasy, dreamed up by actor-narrator-author Kenneth Griffith, about the last years of Napoleon on the barren island of St. Helena.

It takes a while to get started, but becomes a fascinating dramatized documentary once you become accustomed to the idea that Griffith has fashioned a one-man show. Griffith's diligent research adds up to more virtues than vices in Napoleon, a man usually thought of as an uncompromising dictator who is responsible for the body of law called "the Napoleonic Code." Tune in for this acting and writing tour-de-force. 9:30 p.m. Channels 6, 12 (Mansfield) and 12 (Bucyrus) The Democratic Convention ABC has elected to cover major portions of the convention proceedings, rather than a gavel-to-gavel approach. Tonight, it has scheduled coverage of the opening ceremonies and the seating of the delegates in a 90-minute program.

Harry Reasoner and Howard K. Smith will act as co-anchormen, and the following reporters will cover convention floor activities: Frank Reynolds, Herbert Kaplow, Sam Donaldson and Ann "Switch" never did live up to expectations last year. Bob Wagner, a proven charmer with all ages, and reliable silver-haired Eddie Albert wer mired down in Indifferent material. Off to a late start, the series had scripts that barely made deadlines. Getting the show on the air In time became the major aim, so plotting tended to be intricate and hard to follow.

New line producer Jack Laird of "Kojack" expects to correct most of these trouble spots during the hiatus, so look for an improved "Switch," competing against NBC's "Police Story" and ABC's "Family." Show ratings have already risen In the early reruns, Sharon reports, and then she added another tidbit ratings rose last year when violence was increased. Audiences wanted more of what is forbidden at an earlier hour. As for humor, well it hasn't been one of the show's strong points. Wagner and Eddie Albert were forced to reach for laughs most of the time even though they were playing sophisticated characters. In case the emphasis changes, perhaps Sharon might be allowed to partake in the light approach.

"Bob thinks I'm funny," she says. But pretty girls are not supposed to be comediennes; it wouldn't be fair. Sharon is the next best thing a friendly, easy-going sort, one not carried away by her looks. Sharon started in the business as a secretary in an ad agency, then rose to production assistant while studying drama on the side with Hollywood's Estelle Harmon, In less than a year, Sharon had a little theater role, two-night stand. She packed the house with her relatives the first night, and was seen by an agent on the closing performance.

The agent bought that fresh California look of (A-Excellent; B-Very Good; C-Good; D-Fair; E-Poor) Sophia Loren is a bored socialite who takes a job as a housekeeper on Cary Grant's Houseboat tonight at 9 on Channel 9. Melville Shavelson directed this diverting 1958 comedy, as Sophia takes Grant's three kids in hand and begins a predictable romance with their father. The cast includes Murray Hamilton, Martha Hyer, Charles Herbert, Harry Giiardino and Eduardo Ciannelli. The after-dark world of a Tokyo hostess bar provides a young widow with employment and a dubious future. Rating D. SHARON GLESS Secretary in "Switch" Sharon's, sending her post-haste to meet Universal Studio's sharp-eyed Monique James. Sharon walked out of the interview with a seven-year contract. Guest shots followed on Universal TV shows "Marcus Welby," "Owen Marshall," "Emergency," "Rockford Files," "Ironside" and "McCloud." The part of Maggie on "McCloud" three years ago led to Maggie of "Switch." Maggie of "Switch" may be a dedicated actress, but she doesn't harp on the subject.

Asked about her life off-stage, she says, "I just laze around." Doing nothing, however, has little influence on Sharon's appetite. It's big and ravenous: IS Ice cream sandwiches in boarding school set a record, and was only a tipoff to Sharon's talents. "I'm a starch freak," Sharon -said. "And I can eat junk and not blow up." Though she tipped the sales at 160 pounds during teenager days, Sharon keeps slim without trying too hard. For laughs, she plays "The Menu Game" over the phone with Elena Verdugo.

"We make up appetizing menus, and we have only one rule we just can't eat our fantasies." Oh to be young and carefree! K': NEW YORK (UPI) If there's a baby boom next spring, blame the Democrats or the Republicans. The American television audience is about to be cut off from its supply of regular programming, and it could turn to almost anything reading, talking, or, other indoor sports.

"All In The Family" will be replaced by the Democratic version of togetherness, the bodies of various Republicans will replace the wounded of "M-A-S-H," and "Jigsaw John" will be trying to figure out the vice presidential candidates before they are voted upon. NBC "canceled "Ellery Queen" for less. Network executives display a touching faith in the Democratic Party's ability to get into a family fight, but it's hard to figure out how they'll manage it. Without a good domestic donnybrook, the audience is left to ask if Bella Abzug can replace "The Bionic Woman;" if the Democrat's credentials committee is livelier than reruns; if the women's caucus is gutsier than "Police Woman." Both CBS and NBC have some good-looking women working the conventions, including Connie Chung and Catherine Mackin, but they lack the folksy quality of Livie Walton or the Invincible youth of Marie Osmond. NBC is planning gavel-to-gavel coverage, and CBS will give the Democrats what it calls "comprehensive" coverage a vague term that apparently means the Democrats can have prime time but the network won't give them a blank check.

That leaves ABC for the television addict who wants his "fix" of regularly scheduled shows. But tonight ABC will show "Future Cop," a pilot for a television series starring Ernest Borgnine as an old-line cop with a robot for a rookie. At 9:30 p.m., Eastern Time, ABC goes to the convention. The big winners on Monday night usually are the CBS comedy shows and the Democratic Party roll call and keynote speakers won't come up to the MTM and or Norman Lear In the Family" and gag-writing standards. Tuesday ordinarily is ABC's big night, with "Happy Days" and "Laverne and Shirley." That would be fine, except ABC will be airing baseball's All-Star game Tuesday night, so Fonzi and friends get scratched.

Wednesday is when the Democrats will astound the world by nominating Jimmy Carter in what threatens to be television's all-time anti-climax. Thursday is vice presidential nominating day, and the networks are praying Carter has the theatrical instinct to keep everybody guessing. ABC plans to give the younger generation a break by airing its regular reruns of "Welcome Back, Kotter" and "Barney Miller" before switching to the convention at 9 p.m., Eastern time. TV and A's Q. Is the top show In the ratings during the repeat season really "Strasky and I can't believe it since I thought this series was in danger of being cancelled.

K.R., Philadelphia, Pa. A. "Starsky and Hutch" has been rated the top show of the week on occasion during the reruns, but it is not consistently number one. However, it was never in any danger of cancellation, since it established a good ranking in the ratings almost from the beginning of the season.
