MLss Reed was signed to play the matriarch of the Ewing clan this week, just hours after Barbara Bel Geddes announced she would not return in the role for a seventh season, said Lary Youngsteadt, a spokesman for torimar Productions.

The deal is set," said Youngsteadt "We're not sure when she will start work but it will Se around the seventh episode." f. "Dallas" is currently filming at MGM Studios, but will go to Dallas for location shooting on June 20 and return on Aug. 17. That will take them out of Los during the Summer lOlymplcs and out of Dallas before -the Republican convention. Miss Bel Geddes, citing personal reasons, confirmed months of speculation that she would not Return to the show.

She suffered a leart attack a year ago and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. which will account for her absence from the early episodes next season. This past television season "Dallas" was the highest-rated regular prime-time series on the air. Miss Bel Geddes' departure comes three years after the death of Jim Davis, who played her husband, Jock Ewing. Jock was the head of the Ewing clan, which includes J.R.

(Larry Hagman) and Bobby (Patrick Duffy). According to the "Dallas" story Jock disappeared on a trip to South America and it was subsequently learned he died in a plane crash. Miss Reed won an Oscar in 1953 as best supporting actress for her role in "From Here to Eternity." For eight years, beginning In 1958, she was the star of "The Donna Reed Show" on ABC After that Miss Reed, who is married to Grover Asmus, a retired Army officer, was rarely seen on television. Her character was married to Clayton Although the Soviet news agency Tass reported this past week' that Sakharov was eating regularly and feeling well, reports from European sources have led his family to believe that he is being force-fed and that his condition is deteriorating. As reports that his health was precarious continued, his family grew increasingly anxious to get the movie broadcast to mobilize American and European sentiment on the Sakharovs' behalf. The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival last month, and was presented last week on Dutch television. On Sunday, it will be shown in France to President Francois Mitterrand, and the White House has received cassettes from HBO for the president in advance of a June 19 screening at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington.

The movie, which was prepared with the cooperation of the Sakharovs' children, Aleksei Semyon-ov, Tania Yankelevich and her husband, Efrem Yankelevich, was completed last November by Titus Productions, under the supervision of Herbert Brodkin and Robert Berger, who also produced "Holocaust." Much of the discussion was about money, which has become more of a pressing issue in the 1980s because of PBS funding cuts' made by the Reagan administfju tion as part of its overall federal -budget cuts. -z Christensen said Reagan was an advocate of PBS' programs but was ideologically opposed to bankrolling them with federal funds. The PBS president rejected a questioner's use of the word "stingy" to describe Reagan's comi mitment to public TV.

By FRED ROTHENBERG AP Television Writer PHOENIX, Ariz. The new president of the chronically underfunded Public Broadcasting Service -said this week that the financial "picture really is as good as it's been in a long time." Bruce Christensen then took an apolitical stance, declining to say which presidential candidate would serve PBS better. "I don't see us benefitting necessarily from a Democrat any more than a Republican in the White House" next year, he said. Sakharov and his wife, Yelena G. Bonner, on June 20. The movie, "Sakharov," which stars Jason Robards in the title jrole and Glenda Jackson as Miss Jionner, had been planned for a rnid-September broadcast, but HBO hurried it onto its schedule for a single advance showing after Sakharov's recent hunger strike persuaded various activists on the Sakharovs behalf including their children that it might raise public awareness of the Nobel Peace laureate's situation. Sakharov on May 2 began a hunger strike to support efforts by his wife to go abroad for medical treatment "We had a conflict" said Michael Fuchs, the president of HBO. "We didn't want to look like we were commercializing or exploiting a world situation.

When the family began to call, though, We had to consider it seriously." OOOOOQQQQOOOOnpQOOO.QOOppQOyOpOOOQO I IRRRQUQ MARQUEE FOLLIES Closes Sat. The couple then took off for Greece, strike to obtain for his wife medical care that he felt she needed but could not receive in the Soviet Union, Semyonov called Fuchs, and Frank Biondi, the chairman of HBO to discuss the possibility of advancing the film's broadcast "The script of the film." said Semyonov from his home in Newton, where he lives with his sister, brother-in-law, their children and Miss Bonner's mother all of whom are portrayed in the film "was largely accurate." "You cannot tell everything about life in the Soviet Union in one film," he said, "but it was creating the right mood. I think it will help keep Sakharov the focus of attention. The movie explains my parents' situation.

People have to know about events." "Of course I feared," said Semyonov," that the film would be romanticized or commercialized, but on the whole I feel the movie was successful. Jason Robards and Glenda Jackson, in my opinion, are very good actors. And I didn't know how HBO would promote it I also feared that it would be a circus with dancing bears and gypsies, but after they ran a few advance pieces on the 0 o' 0 0 AT H0iiE! in town. a A A al Bi. The film represented a major Investment of resources by HBO, and the lack of advertising that could be arranged on such short notice was a matter of concern to the company. "It would be logisti-cally crazy to put it out without promotion," Fuchs said. "I dont think it would be a godd idea to put it on right away. Frankly, when we were trying to decide whether or not to put this show on early, one thing we thought about was whether or not Americans knew who he was.

I mean, whether or not he was on the front page, they wouldn't necessarily know who Sakharov was unless we prepared them. And if they didn't know, the film wouldn't get the attention it deserves." HBO executives were worried that if the film were to be shown once, when the time came next fall for its extended showings HBO had planned to show the Sakharov film seven times in September that it would be treated as a repeat and would receive no press or viewer attention. staurat PLAN YOUR PARTY OR BANQUET AT OLD ADOBE RESTAURANT, AND DESIGNATE 10 OF THE CHECK TO YOUR FAVORITE CLUB, CHARITY OR CHURCH.
