a. TJ 3 WINNING CONTRACT By HOWARD SCHENKEN and RICHARD L. FREY WTien an important contract depends upon successfully locating a i i card, every effort should be made to play the percentages. Sometimes an "unnecessary" play will yield the necessary of information, but occasionally the skillful declarer can be hoist by his own petard by an equally skillful defender. Oliver Adams, of Van Nuys, probably the J359 rookie of the year, and long a successful bridge player, distinguished himself in this deal from the Chicago Summer Nationals.

He sat West, against one of America's all-time greats in the South position. Vul: NORTH (D) N-S S. A H. O. A 10 9 4 2 C.

Adams watched as declarer won the opening lead with the heart king, cashed the spade ace, led a club to his ace, then ruffed a low heart.

The diamond ace was cashed, a diamond ruffed, and the heart ace played. Normally, West would ruff with his useless trump to prevent a sluff on the board. But why had declarer failed to draw a second round of trumps? And why had he not cashed the heart ace first, raUicr than ruff a low heart? a i a suspicious nature, West deduced that South lacked the all-important trump queen, and wa attempting to gather further information. In order to oblige, Mr. Adams sluffcd a diamond; whereupon declarer led a trump.

When West followed low, dummy's jack was finessed on the theory that West had been trying to protect the queen when he failed to ruff the high heart. In a way, declarer's reasoning had been correct. However, West wasn't protecting his own queen, but rather his partner's, so South went down to defeat.
