Millionaire art dealer Legros dies in France CHASSENEUIL-SUR-BON-NIEURE, France (AP) Fernand Legros, the eccentric millionaire art dealer once imprisoned for defrauding a wealthy Texas art collector, has died of cancer, a family spokesman said. He was 52. Legros, well known in the art and entertainment worlds on both sides of the Atlantic, died Wednesday and was buried here Thursday after private services. His brother-in-law Maurice Pi-card said Legros had been living with his sister in this tiny village in southwestern France since December.

He learned he had throat cancer about six months ago while on a business trip to the United States. The Egyptian-born son of a French Suez Canal administrator and a Greek mother, Legros made his first million as an art dealer when he was 25. He marked the occasion with a lavish party at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel. Through the late 1950s and most of the 1960s, Legros, who sported flowery shirts, cowboy boots and dark glasses, rode the crest of fashion and fame. Then in 1967, millionaire Texas oilman Algur Meadows held a private showing at his Dallas home for friends and American art experts to display 58- paintings he had purchased from Legros for $2 million.

Forty-four of the paintings, alleged to have been by Picasso, Modigli-ani, Dufy and other artists, were judged fakes by the American Association of Art Collectors. Charges were filed in Paris, and Legros eventually took up residence in Switzerland, successfully avoiding extradition for several years. "It was hard to live with the secret." Skeeters said police decided not to hold the woman. "We felt out here (the killing) was justifiable. And she's sure not going to run away.
