Packer Coach Delays Action On Team Cuts GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)-The ax hanging over the heads of some of the Green Bay Packers probably will remain in the air until Sunday when the National Football League club shows what it can do in the return engagement with the Chicago Bears. Coach Scooter McLean hit the roof earlier this week when he led the criticism of his club, handed the worst licking in its 40-year history when smashed by the Baltimore Colts 56-0 last Sunday. It was the fourth beating for the Packers who have won and played a tie. McLean refused- to add comment Wednesday night except to say he hasn't changed his mind about eliminating "bad roots." He brought up the root situation Monday, indicating six or seven veterans might get the sack.

He refused to name the roots that might be hacked off. He did say, "New rules have been established," and added: "The players know what the results will be if they don't abide FRIDAY STORE HOURS 9 A.M. TO 9 P.M. Schnable is hampered slightly with a bruised hip but will be Coach Jess Neely's starting By The Associated Press Florida's Gators gave Auburn's defense its toughest afternoon in two years last Saturday but the stalwart Tigers still have the best record among major college football teams in holding back the opposition. The surprisingly strong Gators roamed for 249 yards (166 on the ground, 83 in the air) against the celebrated Auburn defense that had yielded an average of just 108.6 yards in 5 previous contests.

When the figuring was completed by the NCAA Service Bureau today, however, Auburn still was the leader in total defense average per game (132 yards) and rushing defense 65.7) and second in points yielded per game (27 in 6 for a 4.5 average). Louisiana State's all winners, the No. 1 team in the nation, have given up but 4.1 points per game (29 in 7) in compiling their 7-0 record. Auburn's unbeaten, once-tied team, incidentally, nosed out Florida 6-5 despite the Gators' big yardage totals. Iowa State, with a mediocre 3-4 record, became the new passing defense leader.

The Cyclones have given up just 43.4 aerial yards a game. choice. Three Backs Slowed Ohio State worked on its sag Army football teams are concerned. Both are fullbacks and both are hobbled by injuries. In addition, both are vitally needed this Saturday as Purdue takes on Ohio State in the Big Ten and Army makes its first trip ever to the Southwest to play Rice.

Fifth-Ranked Scorer Jarus has been the leading ground gainer for the eighth-ranked Boilermakers this year. The 6 foot, 197-pound junior from Parma, Ohio is also the nation's fifth-ranked scorer with 54 points on nine touchdowns. He has a twisted knee that kept him in vthe. trainer's room during practice Wednesday for treatment. Any hopes Purdue has of matching Ohio State's terrible -twosome of fullback Bob White and halfback Don Clark rests in Jarus' sturdy legs.

(AP) Lightweight champion Joe Brown still holds his title but sixth-ranked Johnny Busso of New York put a blot on Brown's record with a scorching 10-round decision Wednesday night. Busso, 12-5 underdog at fight time, won the nontitle affair by a comfortable margin with a fine mixture of left jabs and hooks coupled with right crosses that tops for towrt and country! Lou Ciscusi, Brown's manager, said a title fight with Busso wasn't in his plans "but I suppose now we will have to add him to the list." The champion said his weight, a surprising 140 to Busso's 139, wasn't a factor in his defeat. Brown opened a deep gash high on Busso's cheekbone in the fourth round and worked on that briefly but Busso came storming back to carry the attack to the champion.
