It all started 20 years ago and more when a writer named Jo-tiepS Kesselring seat a play called Bodies the Cellar" to Dorothy Suckney, the' actress. With it came an invitation to play die part of Aunt Abbie, a tweet little bid Brooklyn lady who, with her sister, Martha is engaged in the charitable enterprise of doing away with lonely old men. A drop of arsenic in a glass of elderberry wine is what does the trick.

In January 1941, Howard Lindsay (Miss Stickney's husband) and Russell Crouse brought the play, rechristened "Arsenic and Old Lace," to Broadway, with the late Josephine Hull in the Aunt Abbie role and Boris Karloff as Jona-thon, her murderous nephew. Mr. Karloff trudged ominously through the part for 66 weeks, took on the road across the U.S. and Canada, played it in Alaska and Puerto Rico. DURING THE WAR, a GI in special services named George Schaefer- wrote Mr.

Karloff, requesting a photo of him in the Jonathan role, since Mr. Schaefer intended bringing the play to service men on the Pacific island war-fronts. Mr. Karloff did not send off the photograph. He sent himself.

And with Schaefer as Teddy the nutty brother who believes the staircase to be San Juan Hill, the graveyard in the cellar to be the Panama Canal locks, and himself to be Theodore Roosevelt they toured the Pacific. After the war, Karloff played in two television productions of "Arsenic." Monday night, Feb. 5, "Hall of Fame" will present the third TV offering of this American institution (Channel 4, 9:30 p.m.) FOR THE first time the Brooklyn comedy will be on home grounds broadcast from NBC-TV's Brooklyn studios. For the first time, Aunt Abbie will be played by Dorothy Rtickney. And Karloff, heading up a marvelous cast which includes Mildred Nat-wick, Tony Randall, Tom Bosley, George Voskovic and Dody Heath, again will be Jonathan.

The producer-director, trimmed down a bit from his Teddy Roosevelt days, is George Schaefer. Harper. $4.95. The American embassy in Mos cow would be a fine target for the Soviet espionage service. Nat urally they would like to find some one connected with the embassy who could be blackmailed into providing information for them. What better opportunity could the Russians have than Sam Mat tock and his Russian wife Elena? Sam had been in Russia before, had fallen in love with Elena and finally had managed to get her way from the Stalin terror, Now they were back in Moscow.

Sam was on the embassy staff. And Elena, dazzled by the apparent relaxation of the police state; was trying to live in two worlds at once, So while Elena is playing with fire in her attempts to find her brother Vadim, long presumed to have been killed in the purges, Ralph MacKenzie returns to Mos cow, this time as minister- counselor, and renews old ties with the tragic Natasha and with an old, hardened veteran of the diplomatic double cross, George. Here we have the elements of a fine thriller, with MacKenzie coming to the rescue as the Russians close in on the Mattocks. It is a spy story, with the trap pings of hidden microphones and coded messages. It also is a tragedy centered around Elena.
