Says Lewis Is Paying Off Debt To Stevenson By *noel»t »4 'rm CHICAGO—The Illinois Republican "truth squad" chairman says labor leader John L. Lewis Is "paying off a debt" in supporting Gov. Adlai Stevenson, the Democratic presidential nominee. State Sen. Arthur J. Bidwill (R-River Forest) said Tuesday the debt was incurred when the governor decided against presenting a proposed new State Mine Safety Code to the 1951 legislature. Bidwill said the. controversial code was not placed before legis lators "because of the objections of Lewis' union," the United Mine Workers. On May 16, 1951, Stevenson told a news conference he made his decision because "all of the senators from the mining areas" recommended against presenting the code at that time—six weeks before the end of the legislative session, and because the State Mining Investigation Commission "unanimously rejected it." The commission is a statutory ageriey which studies proposed mine legislation. Of its five members, one each represents the UMW, the independent Progressive Mine Workers union, the public and two coal operator associations.
