V. PRESERVED IN AMBER Scientists Study Insects 30,000,600 Years Old . BERKKLEY, May 25-InsecU trapped and perfectly preserved' in globs of pitch which during the past 30,000,000 years has turned into timber are being compared today with modern insects by University of California scientists. " These natural "lime capsules" have been found in the forests of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas by Dr. J. Wyatt Durham, Dr. Paul D. Hurd and Dr. Itaymond F. Smith. Dr. Durham, a paleontologist,1 explains that the mineral, amber.l collected and used by man since the days of the Egyptian phar-ah.s originates from the resins aoifjutris exuded by many trees. As the virtually decay-resistant material drops to the ground it is carried by erosion and finally buried in deposits of sand or clay. . Millions of years pass before the gums reappear as rock in j the case of the minerals collected from Chiapas, about 30,- 000,000 years. J Dr. Hurd and Dr. Smith, both onton.uiogiMs, have been making exhaustive studies of the tiny insects that they have found deeply embedded in these mineralized c hunks of resin, The scientists published details of their research in this month's edition of "Pacific Discovery," official magazine of the California Academy of Sciences. Because they are completely enclosed in the rock, ihcie has been no decomposition. By polishing the sides of the rocks, the scientists are able to scrutinize the fine details of wings, structure of body parts, and to esti mate weight and size of these insects that mistakenly landed on a tree trunk millions of years ago. Comparisons with modern (.pedes five the scientists valu able clues tu the evolution of in sect life, probable vegetation and, by inference, the climatic conditions that' existed in the general locality. . Dr. Smith and Dr. fluid report they have found) i' amber lroin the southern Mexican jungle a ".itinttlcss bee," which had previously only been lnund in amber from the inland of Sicily. Many authorities believe that the modern hone bee evolved from such' an insect, and attach considerable significance to the U.C. discovery. Other types of insects that have been found embedded in the amber crvstals include dawn-age counterparts to modern ants, beetles, caddis'flies. cockroaches, duslywings, flies, mites, moths and thrips. r Ceremonies Tomorrow at School Site Ceremonies honoring the start of construction of a new Sherman Sihoijl will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow on the n'nunds of the old school, 5328 Brann St. Construction workers began moving equipment onto the site a few da . ago to clear away the louiid.itioiw of old building-- razed earlier.
