They are easy to grow and they produce well, even in ordinary soil. It's possible to harvest a great deal of food from a small garden. An area 10 feet by 25 feet is big enough for beans, radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, beets and peppers. But an area that size won't leave much room for corn, vine crops and such space wasters as cabbage and broccoli. A second or third crop can be gtown in the same space Down To Earth, By VIRGIL A STANFIELD CASi.MaggA411m:x4ogooKomat during the summer and early fall.

Replace the early crops like onions, radishes, lettuce and beets with beans, peppers, tomatoes and second plantings of carrots and beets. The soil should be busy from late March to the first killing frost in October. When choning garden space. it's advisable to pick soil thars well drained and gets sun much of the day. Not many vegetables will do well in the shade.

If the soil is poor and mostly clay, start improving it now. Use ashes from the fireplace or furnace on it. If you can find some rotting straw or hay, spread it around. Get some sawdust and manure and cover the garden area. Later, when the soil can be spaded, work in some peatmoss and fertilizer.

Start saving leaves and rubbish from the lawn. Pile them in a corner and let the weather act on them: After a year or so, dig them into the soil. Soil improvement is a continuing thing. The mulch used around growing vegetables can be worked into the soil to benefit the next crop. 0 ck AsLtin 00 CIO LbLIOTet gb amionftopikidompeNi 95 tractive names as Honey and Cream and Peaches and Cream.

Corn of this type produces slender ears and the grains are tender because the cover on them is easily broken. The flavor seems a little more delicate than most of the other plain yellow or white corn varieties. Also popular these days are the two extra-sweet varieties developed in Illinois a few years ago. The long-season variety of this one is Illini Xtra-Sweet which is ready in 85 days. If an earlier corn is desired, theres Early Xtra-Sweet which can be used in 71 days after planting.

These varieties really are much sweeter than the others because the sugar in them is slower to turn to starch. It is said that Illini Xtra-Sweet is four times sweeter than other corns 48 hours after harvest. Corn, however, should not be kept this long after it is picked. These sweet types must be kept away from other kinds, of corn in the garden or field or they lose some of their sweetness. Let's rick a Flower After they take care of the recession, inflation and the fuel shortage.

maybe our lawmakers will get around to naming a national flower. The subject has been before Congress several times in recent years. but no action was taken. The late Senator Everett Dirksen plugged for the marigold, and the Burpee firm named one of its marigolds for him. It seems.

It won't be long until the small area will be producing big crops. Bush Beans Popular Tomatoes probably are the most popular crop grown in home gardens. But seeds-men say that beans are second. So these people who sell the seed we use have voted bush beans "vegetable of the year." There are so many varieties of bush beans that the newcomer to gardening may become confused when buying seed. The oldtimer decides on a couple he likes and stays with them.

Among the better varieties are Toperop, Contender, Greencrop. Tenderpod and Burpee's Stringless Green Pod. Royalty is a purple bean that is tasty. It attracts fewer bean beetles than the others. A pole bean of this variety also is available.

There are bush varieties of Blue Lake and Romano, popular pole varieties. The bush Romano is known as Roma. while the miniature Blue Lake has been designated as Kika Lake. The gardener who likes wax beans of the bush type will find Penbil Pod Wax, Surecrop, Goldcrop and Bur-pees Brittle Wax good ones. Shell beans are popular in some households.

These beans are the ones that are permitted to mature on the vine. As soon as the pods begin to shrivel and turn yellow or red, the vines are cut and dried. Then the seeds, or beans, are removed and stored so insects can't get to them. Red Kidney beans, White Marrowfat and Dwarf Horticultural beans have pods streaked with red, and the MARC FASTEAU little too far. Maybe we can feel and hurt and say whars on our minds without being any less masculine.

It won't hurt us to play with the kids (maybe even change a per or two) or to let women compete with us for our jobs. But Fasteau isn't satisfied to let things rest here. Feminists have been accused of trying to turn women into men. Fasteau, on the other hand, seems determined to turn men into women. The American female is the example he sets in front of the American male.

Fasteau has visions of an androgynous society. where everyone possesses the traditional "masculine" and "feminine" characteristics. regardless of sex. He insists that all the sexual differences, other than the obvious physical ones. have been created by society and in particular by men.

who because of greater physical strength have been able to dominate women. Henry Biller and Dennis Meredith concur in "Father Power" that the American male has been taken in by a false image of masculinity. But while Fasteau complains that we men just don't stack up to women. they take a more constructive and more realistic approach to the subject. We men.

Column for Men Only The nation's seedsmen have no poles or fence are one of beans themselves are just as colorful. The White Marrow-fat beans are ideal for bak'ing. The Dwarf Horticultural beans are good dried or when used as green snap beans. Bush beans are easy to grow. They are ready in 45 or 50 days after planting and they have few enemies.

Mexican Bean Beetles are the worst pest and sometimes they don't show up all summer. If they do, dust the vines a few times with rotenone, a mild insecticide that's easily washed off the pods. Two-Color Corn Tasty Two-color sweet corn is getting more popular every year. Most of the seed catalogs now list a few varieties of this white and yellow mixed corn under such at the family long enough. Women just can't handle the job.

Many of the problems of our children and the ill of society can be tied to the father's absence from the home or his neglect of his children. It's time, they say, for us to exercise our "father power." Father power is defined as "the pervasive. profound power that is a part of your and every other father's nature as a parent." Every child. the little girl as well as the little boy, needs an adequate male figure in his life to show him what a man is supposed to be. There's no way your wife is going to do this job for you.

Pointing out that virtually all books on raising children have been directed toward the mother, Biller and Meredith have undertaken to tell the father what he should know. They show us how to give our youngsters self-confidence, how to discipline. how to teach them about sex. how to prepare them for school and. above all.

how to be that necessary male model. They would seem to agree with Fasteau that parents and teachers should treat boys and girls more equally. Girls. for example. should be allowed to be more physically active and aggressive.

while boys should learn to express. rather than hide. their feelings. But they also recognize that non-physical sexual differences do exist and that they are not necessarily bad. The important thing.

they point out. is that fathers "realize that to be well-rounded. a person. male or female, possess assertiveness. physical ability, verbal ability.

tenderness and an ability to relate to others." (Well. girls. I knew you would stick around till the end. That's one of the differences between men and women if something is designated "for women men aren't the least bit interested I lot of Americans want the rose as the national flower, although it is harder to grow than the marigold. geranium and petunia. The zinnia, which has been improved and made more beautiful in recent years, might also be considered. New Ones Good Too Do the old-time tomatoes taste better than the newer hybrid varieties? Tests made at Michigan State University show they don't. Ten of the old-time varieties were planted along with 10 of the new ones. They were grown in the same kind of soil and given the same care.

Horticulturists and food editors were asked to sample the fruit. They couldn't tell the difference. Most of the newer types, however, were more attractive and the vines produced more fruit. The best-tasting tomatoes are the ones grown in the home garden and permitted to ripen in the sun. Hothouse tomatoes can't equal the kind grown in the garden.

Neither can the ones shipped in from Mexico. California or Florida. The fruit must be picked too early if it is to be shipped a long distance. Markets sometimes are reluctant to sell the homegrown fruit because it doesn't keep as well as the kind that's picked before it is ripe. America Vegetable Grower magazine reports.

Women, read no further. You may go wash the dinner dishes or something. The subject, men, is men. They are saying some terrible things about us in these two books. The one insists we are too hung up on maintaining an image of toughness and dominance.

The other says that because we have neglected our children, they have, among other things, failed in school, been unable to achieve satisfying sexual and social relationships and turned to crime and other anti-social behavior. The male machine values strength and toughness. He drives himself incessantly to prove his superiority, at work, in the bedroom and on the playing field. Competition is the bread of his life. Any expression of emotion or admission of weakness violates this masculine image.

He never cries or complains or admits to being sick. He expresses friendship with mock insults or by throwing punches in jest. Feelings of love and respect are almost never verbalized. Okay. guys.
