COLUMBUS (AP) Business political action committees took in more contributions than labor political action committees did last year in Ohio, according to a new report from the secretary of state's office. The computer-generated report the first of its kind from the office also said political action committee (PAC) money accounted for $6.8 million in contributions to state candidates and causes in 1989.

Secretary of State Sherrod Brown released the four-page report in advance of an appearance today in Oberlin, where he was expected to outline details of a campaign-finance bill he is proposing. According to the report, business groups made $3.2 million in contributions, outspending labor groups 3-2. Leading PAC spending in Ohio last year were a Senate campaign committee, the Realtors, the United Auto Workers and the Teamsters. The biggest PACs generally made their largest contributions last year to House and Senate legislative leaders, political caucuses and political parties, not directly to statewide candidates, according to a survey of the records by The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer. The report contained no information on individual contributions to the PACs or PAC contributions to political candidates.

That information is not available from the computer. PACs took in nearly $1 million more than they gave out in contributions. The report shows that $1.9 million went to union PACs, $3.2 million was collected by business PACs and $1.2 million went to PACs serving the Ohio House and Senate Democratic and Republican caucuses.
