4A OBITUARIES NEWS JOURNAL Thursday, August 24, 2006 Howard Lee Norris Phyllis J. Burton PLYMOUTH Phyllis J. Burton, 70, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a long illness. Friends may call at Secor Funeral Home, Plymouth, Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Linda Heinaman. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial expressions may be made to Stein Hospice Services.

Ex-financial chief pleads not guilty to diverting church funds CLEVELAND (AP) The former financial chief of Ohio's largest Roman Catholic diocese pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he schemed to divert about $750,000 in church funds to himself and a friend. Joseph H. Smith was charged in an Aug.

16 federal indictment with 23 counts, including making false personal income tax returns, money laundering, mail fraud and conspiracy. Also charged was Anton Zgoznik, Smith's friend who once worked under him at the Diocese of Cleveland. He was charged with 15 counts, including conspiracy, money laundering and mail fraud. Zgoznik also pleaded not guilty Wednesday. Both were released on $50,000 bond.

The federal indictment alleges Smith diverted money collected from members of the diocese's 233 parishes across eight northeast Ohio counties. Prosecutors say that from 1997 through 2004, Smith approved inflated payments of more than $17.5 million from the diocese to companies owned by Zgoznik. fTTT' Robert Eugene Hite Jr. MANSFIELD Robert Eugene Hite 51, of Har-wood Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at MedCen-tralMansfield Hospital after a long illness.

Bob was born Aug. 26, 1954, in Morgantown, W.Va., was graduated from Morgantown High School in 1973, and came to the Mansfield area four years ago from Hazel-ton, Pa. Before he be HITE came ill, Bob was employed by Lowes as a member of the management team. He also worked at The Mattress Warehouse in Harrisonburg, Va. He was an avid NASCAR fan, enjoyed golfing and fishing, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Evelyn Ramey Hite, whom he married Oct. 18, 1976; a daughter, Dawn M. Sanchez of Mansfield; a son, Justin E. Hite and his friend Carolyn lams of Mansfield; three grandchildren, McKenzie Slone Sanchez, Madisyn Paige Sanchez and- Mason Robert Sanchez; a stepgrand-child, Rickie James Sanchez; his parents, Robert E.

Hite Sr. and his wife Charlotte of Shenandoah, his mother, Chloe Erma Hawkins Hite of Morgantown; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce D. and Jerry Dodd of Morgantown; his mother-in-law, Sara M. Ramey of Lexington; two brothers-in-law, Charles R. Ramey and his wife Barb and M.

She was an area resident much of her life, spending some ot her years in the Florida area. She retired from Mansfield Memorial Homes, where she was employed as a bookkeeper. Mrs. Janes was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Red Hat Society. She enjoyed traveling and JANES cm i I JANES spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John "J.J." Janes; two sons, Thomas (Pat) Janes and Donald (Charlotte) Janes, all of Mansfield; six grandchildren; ten greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Patty (Bob) Jenkins of Belpre and Rosalee (Bill) Merideth of Granville; a brother, David (Sharon) White of Parkers-burg; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Jessie White; a grandson; and a brother, Sonny White. Lehman NEWARK Cheryl A. Lehman, 46, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at The Cleveland Clinic. Formerly a Cuyahoga Falls and Canal Fulton resident, Cheryl was born Jan. 5, 1960, in Lancaster, Ohio, to David L.

and Patty Mohler Lehman. She was a graduate of Newark Senior High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University. She was a member of Neal Avenue United Methodist Church. Miss Lehman was a former teacher and coach at Our Lady of the Elms in Akron, Ohio and of late, a public relations specialist with the Ohio Department of Transportation in Ravenna. Surviving are her parents, David and Patty of Newark; brothers, Lynn David (Lisa) Lehman of Newark and Timothy John (Susan) Lehman of Mansfield; nieces, Michayla and Hannah; nephews, Zachary, Benjamin, Philip and Samuel; several uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends.

A memorial service for Cheryl Ann Lehman will be at p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Neal Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Harra presiding. The family will receive friends and relatives two hours prior to service time, beginning at 1 p.m.

Mr. Owens was of the Baptist faith. Boggs ASHLAND Theda C. Boggs, 85, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, in Ashland. She was born May 9, in South Point, Ohio, to the late Walter Jennings and Lucy Webb Johnson. She was a graduate of Ironton High School and the Ashland (Ky.) School of Business.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, a member of Circle 2 and a member of the Women's Steering Committee. She was member and past commander of the Air Force Mothers and was a member and past president and past treasurer of the Ashland County Democratic Women's Club. On July 29, 1940, she was married Brownie D. Boggs, who preceded her in death on Oct.

27, 1992. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John J. and Virginia Boggs of Ashland, William D. and Judith Boggs of Parkersburg, W.Va.; six grandchildren, John Boggs, Jamie Boggs, Vikki (Jason) Owens, David Boggs, Steven Boggs and Kenneth Boggs; and brother, Jack W. Johnson of West Jefferson, N.C.

In mid-May, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and courageously battled during the short time he had left. He was born June 18, 1936, in Wheelersburg, Ohio, to Howard E. and Helen Burke Mr.

served U.S. Corps from Ada Norris. Norris in the Marine Reserves 1954 to 1962, and was part of the group NORRIS that started Toys for Tots in Mansfield. Howard retired on March 31, 2006, after 13 years of service with the city of Mansfield. Mr.

Norris was also a maintenance supervisor at Faultless Rubber in Ashland, and for eight years at Mansfield Tire. From 1954-1970, he was an electrician and maintenance supervisor at Borg-Warner. He was also the founder of Norris Electric. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, and friend. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Lorretta Elizabeth Vermillion Norris; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ron Hettinger of Ashland, Ruth and Dave Diehl of Mansfield; sons, Howard Patrick Norris of Bellville, Robert Allen Norris of Mansfield; three grandchildren, Dennis Lammers, Joshua Hettinger, both of Ashland, and Davey Diehl of Mansfield; sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Vincent Stephens of Florida; and brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Nancy Norris of Freder-icktown, Thomas R.

Born Dec. 11, 1953, in Louise, the son of Charles and Mary Ginn France he was a lifelong resident of Mansfield and a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. Lee had worked for the city of Mansfield's sanitation department.

at 3 in are and Police First block of Lexington Avenue, Mansfield A 24-year-old man was charged Wednesday with possession of marijuana, obstructing official business and resisting arrest after police reported seeing a drug transaction. An officer told the suspect to put his hands against the wall, but he struggled and had to be taken to the ground, according to reports. The suspect got up and reportedly fled on foot but was apprehended after running into a police cruiser. Police said they found a large bag ot marijuana in the man pants pocket. 800 block of West Third Street, Mansfield A 1 7-year-old girl reported the theft of a $200 television and a $200 gold necklace from the residence Tuesday night.

There were no signs of forced entry. 300 block of West Third Street, Mansfield A 1 7-year-old girl was charged Tuesday nignt on an outstanding warrant after a police officer recognized her and she reportedly ran after being told to stop. She also was issued summonses for resisting arrest and underage consumption and was taken to the Richland County Juvenile Justice Center. First block of West Main Street, Shiloh A 25-year-old woman reported Tuesday morning the theft of an 1 ,800 four-wheeler, which had been chained and locked to a back porch. 500 block of Reed Road, Mifflin Township A 39-year-old man reported Tuesday night the theft of $405 and a cell phone from a vehicle he said he had loaned to his girlfriend.

The truck belonged to a 71-year-old man. 800 block of Mayflower Drive, Madison Township A 1 7-year-old boy reported Tuesday morning the theft of a $500 iPod with adapter and a 1 50 compact disc player from a car.

First block of Mohican Trail, Lexington A 19-year-old man reported Tuesday afternoon the theft of 90 CDs, a CD case and a Sony Walkman from unlocked vehicle. 700 block of Andover Road, Mansfield A 65-year-old man reported his propane grill, worth $300, was stolen from his back yard. The theft occurred between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 6 p.m.

Wednesday. 100 block of West Third Street, Mansfield A 57-year-old woman reported replacement windows, worth $450, and an inside wood door, worth $150, were stolen from her home. A side window that had been boarded up was pried open. 300 block of Sixth Avenue, Mansfield Between 8 a.m. Aug.

15 and 8 a.m. Wednesday, a kayak, worth $450, was reportedly stolen. It had been stored behind portable toilets in the back yard. 400 block of McPherson Street, Mansfield Between midnight Sunday and noon Wednesday, $300 of copper pipe was reportedly stolen. The pipe was ripped out of a kitchen and an upstairs bathroom, police reports said.
