Service for historian Will Durant LOS ANGELES (AP) Historian Will Durant, who with his recently deceased wife Ariel collaborated on the ll-volume "Story of Civilization," was remembered as "a man for All centuries" at a quiet memorial service Friday.

"Will was a fascinating mixture," said Norman Cousins, who spoke along with a longtime Durant family friend, Robert Bergman, at a non-religious service attended by about 100 persons at the Westwood Memorial Park chapel. "As a young man, he asked too many questions to be an authentic rebel, and in his later years he was too distrustful of the answers to be an authentic conservative," said Cousins, a former Saturday Review editor who now teaches at the University of California-Los Angeles medical school. Durant died Nov. 7 at age 96 without ever being told of the death of his wife of almost 68 years, Ariel, who died Oct. 25 at age 83.

The couple would have completed 68 years of married life Oct. 31 and spent 40 of those years working on "The Story of Civilization." They won a Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for volume seven, "Rousseau and the Revolution." Durant came from a large French-Canadian family but abandoned the Catholic Church to become a liberal educator in pre-World War I New York. His wife, who was born Ida Kaufman and nicknamed Ariel by Durant, was his pupil at a progressive school and he quit his Job to marry her in 1913. He was 28 and she a 15-year-old who roller-skated to City Hall for the ceremony. He got his PhD in philosophy from Columbia University and eked out a living for years teaching philosophy to adults.

Out of his lectures came a book, "The Story of Philosophy," which was a surprise bestseller that provided the money for the couple to start work on "The Story of Civilization." The first volume, "Our Oriental Heritage," appeared in 1935 and the last, "The Age of Napoleon," was published in 1977. The couple also collaborated on "The Lessons of History," a summation of their findings in the "Civilization" series; "Interpretations of Life," a survey of literature; and "A Dual Autobiography," a 1977 book which was their last published work. Durant had been hospitalized for five weeks when he died. His body was cremated prior to the memorial service. C.
