In 1961, Mankiewicz was hired, to take over a foundering: "Cleopatra." His final film, "Sleuth," starred. Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier. All were nominated for Oscars. Mankiewicz married Elizabeth; Young in 1934; they had one son, Eric, and were divorced in 1937-His second marriage to actress Rosa' Stradner in 1939 produced two boys, Christopher and Thomas.

She died in 1958 and he married Rosemary Matthews in 1962. They; had a daughter, Alexandra. He is survived by his wife and daughter and three sons. Joseph Leo Mankiewicz was born in Wilkes-Barre, on Feb. 11, 1909, youngest of three children of immigrants Frank and Johanna Mankiewicz.

His father had been an editorial writer for German-language newspapers in New York, went to Wilkes-Barre to teach and later returned to New York, where he became a professor. Like his brother Herman, who was 12 years older, he went to Columbia University. Mankiewicz received his liberal arts degree at age 19. He worked briefly in Berlin, then went to Hollywood where Herman had established himself as a writer he would later co-author "Citizen BEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) Joseph L.

Mankiewicz, the Academy Award-winning writer and director whose films included the classics "All About Eve," "A Letter to Three Wives" and "Suddenly Last Summer," died Friday. He was 83. He died at his home here from heart failure, said his nephew, public relations agent Frank Mankiewicz. His uncle's film career began at the end of the silent era, peaked during the heyday of the Hollywood studio system, encompassed the controversy of "Cleopatra" and ended with the hit "Sleuth" in 1972. He won Academy Awards for writing and direction in 1949 for "A Letter to Three Wives" and repeated the double Oscar the following year for "All About Eve." The four Oscars sat on the mantle at his home.

Mankiewicz also got memorable performances from James Mason and Marlon Brando in a 1933 version of "Julius Caesar." He coined the phrase "my little chickadee" for W.C. Fields in "If I Had a Million." He produced the first movie in which Katharine Hepburn was teamed with Spencer Tracy. As a director, he was hailed for his mastery of flashbacks and use of squndtrack narration. As a writer, he was known for his witty, biting dialogue. critical successes but "The Philadelphia Story" with Hepburn, James Stewart and Cary Grant was his first smash.

Another was "Woman of the Year," the first to pair Hepburn and Tracy. One highlight is a scene in which Hepburn, a high-powered columnist, tries to make breakfast for her sportswriter husband, Tracy, and fails hilariously. His first chance at directing came in 1946 with "Dragonwyck," a period piece. "A Letter to Three Wives" soon followed and then the triumph, "All About Eve" a backstage story of an aging star and ruthless young actress. In addition to the writing and direction awards, "Eve" won an Kane." Joe began by writing intertitles for silent films such as "The Mysterious Dr.

Fu Manchu" and "Fast Company." He was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing "Skippy" in 1931 and continued collaborating on scripts, but his real ambition lay elsewhere.
