8B SPORTS Thursday. May 5, 1994 NEWS JOURNAL 'The Body' puts a legal slam on Vince McMahon JEFF GORMAN 1 ST'J Around the Ring when the WWF was signing up the best stars in WCW? Ric Flair, The Road Warriors, Dusty Rhodes and The Steiner Brothers all had impressive track records before they entered the WWF. Now, it seems the WWF is taking wrestlers who have neat gimmicks, but no track records. This trend started last year with The Smokin' Gunns, a rookie cowboy team. Then, the hip-hop Men on a Mission team joined the WWF after just a few weeks of seasoning in Memphis.

Now, Duke "The Dumpster" Droese, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound garbage man, is invading the federation after a few years of competition in Florida. His biggest notoriety came last year, when he made the "PWI 500" in Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazine at No. 500. He was ranked 24 notches behind Miss Texas, the first woman to make the list. At the time, Droese was known simply as Garbage Man.

World Wrestling Federation owner Vince McMahon started the legal season off on the wrong foot, as he lost more than $800,000 in a suit to Jesse "The Body" Ventura. Ventura claimed that McMahon owed him royalties from the sales and rentals of WWF videotapes on which Ventura did color commentary. "The Body" is now a broadcaster for World Championship Wrestling. McMahon has to be hoping this legal loss isn't a bad sign, because his trial on charges of steroid distribution is set to begin on June 5 in Uniondale, N.Y.

If McMahon is found guilty and his empire falls, almost everything in wrestling could change radically. Mid-America debuts The Mid-America Wrestling Alliance started operations with a doubleheader in Canton on Sunday. Many of the Mid-America wrestlers have competed locally in the American States Wrestling Alliance. On the matinee card, Ohio champion Scott Summers defeated "Rugged" Ryan Scott. After the match, Vladimir Koloff, Ivan's nephew, tossed three chairs into the ring and blasted Summers in the back of the head with one of them.

"Handsome" Frank Stalletto rushed to Summers' aid. On the evening show, Summers defended his belt against Koloff. After referee Mr. was knocked out, Ryan Scott and Stalletto entered the ring and a foUr-way brawl ensued. Summers and Stalletto whipped Koloff and Ryan Scott into each other, and Summers pinned Koloff to retain the Ohio title.

Time to dump Dink? Not everyone was horrified when "Double Jeff Jarrett hit Dink with two pies and squirted ketchup and mustard all over the midget clown. Some of Doink's fans are annoyed by his loss of killer instinct since adopting Dink last fall. Last year, as an "evil clown," Doink became the WWF's most popular rulebreaker since The Undertaker. Dink's detrimental effect on Doink became clear at Wrestle- mania when Bam Bam Bigelow and Luna Vachon defeated the clowns in mixed tag-team match. Doink was clearly preoccupied with protecting Dink.

This led to Doink's flattening at the hands of Bam Bam. Doink definitely has the ability to win the Intercontinental title from Diesel or to capture the "King of the Ring" tournament next month. It may be time to drop Dink. Short jabs The Headshrinkers defeated The Qucbeccrs on "Monday Night Raw" for the WWF tag team title. More on this next week.

Brutus Beefcake captured the World Wide Wrestling Alliance title from Nailz on April 16 in Atlantic City, at the Trump Taj Mahal. Also on that show, Sid Vicious made his return to the ring after the stabbing incident with Am Anderson last October in England. El Sid was disqualified in his match with Tito Santana when Rick Martel interfered. Viewers of last month's WCW Spring Stampede pay-per-view show didn't see an exhibition bout between Danny Bonaduce (Danny from "The Partridge and Christopher Knight (Peter from "The Brady Bonaduce won the non-televised match. The two "70s refugees may square off in a televised rematch at Slamboree on May 22 in Philadelphia.

The shock of Diesel's Intercontinental title victory over Razor Ramon is still rippling through the WWF. But Diesel already had wins over Bret Hart and Randy Savage under his belt when he knocked off Ramon. Owen Hart interfered in Diesel's win over the "Hitman" two months ago. The win over the "Macho Man" came on April 2 in Haifa, Israel. Talent dumpster Remember a few years ago CANTON Matinee show at American Legion Post 44 on Sunday: Thunder Morgan pinned "Handsome" Frank Stalletto after nailing him with Ed Deadly's briefcase; Kenny "Hurricane" Jackson pinned "The Godfather" Lou Marconi after a headbutt; "Dynamite" Derek Stone pinned "Playboy" Buddy Rose with a reverse rol-lup; Max Profit and Grave Digger beat The Assassin and The Gate Keeper when Profit pinned Assassin after a side slam; Ohio lunlor heavyweight champ Kid Collins beat Polish Prince by reverse decision; Ohio champ Scott Summers pinned "Rugged" Ryan Scott.

Evening card: Derek Stone pinned Lou Marconi with a sunset flip; Kenny Jackson pinned Assassin after a second-rope body-press; Polish Prince and Buddy Rose beat Grave Digger and Max Profit when Prince pinned Grave Digger; Frank Stalletto battled Ryan Scott to a no-contest in a bloody taped-fist match; Kid Collins pinned Thunder Morgan with a spinning sunset flip; Ohio champ Scott Summers' pinned Vladimir Koloff.
