News Journal, Mansfield, O. Saturday, September 5, 1981 22 Sports San Diego's 'Bruise Brothers' to test Browns' offensive line By Jeff Schudel The News Journal Quick recovery Football players are known for being in superb condition, but they aren't the only ones. Coaches are in good shape, too. It was just two weeks ago that Browns' receivers coach Rich Kotite underwent a delicate operation to remove a tumor from his pituitary gland. Kotite's vision was blurred.

He went in for a check-up and the tumor was discovered. Doctors removed the tumor bit by bit, and when the operation was completed, it was discevered the tumor had once been the size of a walnut (At one time the rumor mill had the tumor the size of a lemon. Kotite called a halt to the tales for fear someone would say the tumor was as big as a in his car, rush home, kick off his shoes and plop down in his favorite chair to watch the day's menu of football games. All day long he's either practicing or meeting. During his free time, he's going to watch football.

"I'm still a fan," he said. "Especially if we're in the race. When I was at Buffalo and we were 2-12 I wasn't too excited." Every NFL game is televised somewhere in the country, but Monday's are special became the two teams are center stage. It is the only game in town. "It's special because your peers are watching," DeLamielleure said.

"Sometimes waiting to play at night is hard, but since this is the first Monday game of the season and we've been playing at night in the preseason we'll be used to the waiting." Everyone involved agrees on one point the winner of the scoreboard will be the team that wins the battle on the line of scrimmage. If the Browns win, the bruises Joe D. gets will be easier to wear. Extra points It is unlikely the Browns-Chargers game will be a sellout There were about 3,000 unsold tickets Friday morning, and all of them had to be sold by 9 last confirmed Dino Hall, Lyle Alzado and Curtis Weathers can play Monday. All were questionable with minor will be the Browns' only Monday Night game this season.

They play once on Thursday and once on Saturday. The other 13 are on Sundays. "Doug Dieken will be on Dean. That will be good because Dean is quick," Rutigliano said. "Dieken is effective against quicker linemen." Robert E.

Jackson, Cleveland guard, will have his hands full with Johnson. Johnson was a first-round draft choice of the Chargers in 1975 when Tommy Prothro, Cleveland draft supervisor, was there. Johnson led the league in quarterback sacks last year with 1712. A half sack is credited to a player when he uses a quarterback as a wishbone with another defender. Jackson will get some help from center Tom De Leone, but that means Browns' guard Joe DeLamielleure will have to go one-on-one with Keleher.

Both Joe D. and Keleher are pro bowlers. Keleher was another product of the Prothro era. He was taken in the second round of 1975. He was credited with 20 tackles in the AFC championship game against Oakland last year.

San Diego lost the game, but not because of Keleher. He led the linemen with 89 tackles last year. Dean was another 1975 draft pick. He was taken in the second round after Keleher. Whatever Prothro does in the future, he'll be able to look back on 1975 with a smile.

Jones is the only one of the four who isn't homegrown. San Diego traded to get him from Los Angeles in 1976. The press guide says he is underrated. Jones had 11 sacks last year, second only to Johnson. CLEVELAND In San Diego, they call the Chargers' defensive line "The Bruise Brothers." Not much more needs to be said to describe what the Cleveland Browns' offensive line is up against Monday night.

It will be force against force when the Browns and Chargers kick off their 1981 regular season schedules at Cleveland Stadium Monday night. The Browns led the American Football Conference in pass protection last year, allowing the lowest percentage of sacks in the conference. Buffalo quarterback Joe Ferguson was sacked only 20 times to 22 for Sipe, but Sipe threw more passes. Enter the San Diego defensive line, the foursome that led the AFC in quarterback sacks. The Chargers got to the passer 56 times, rushing him like starving hounds in a dogfood commercial.

They haven't let-up in the preseason. San Diego had 18 sacks in four preseason games. San Diego's Big Four are Fred Dean at right end, Gary Johnson at right tackle, Louie Keleher at left tackle and Leroy Jones at left end. Dean, Johnson and Keleher all played on the AFC team in the Pro Bowl last year. That AFC squad was coached by none other than Sam Rutigliano, coach of the Browns.

Rutigliano declined the opportunity to choose San Diego's best pass rusher. The four hang around like a street gang and are just as dangerous. Kotite has been at practice all week though only as an observer. He is going to work into practice gradually. He says he has no affter-effects from the operation and that be enjoyed better sight almost immediately.

No fun DeLamielleure, who's matched up against Keleher, feels the Chargers are tough up front because they mix things up. "They do a lot of tricks and stunts, especially when they go after the quarterback," DeLamielleure said. "Against the run it's more one-on-one." The Browns have a short practice scheduled tomorrow. When it ends, Delamielleure will shower quickly so he can hop Digest Georgia, Alabama top opening attractions Softball playoffs rescheduled MANSFIELD The start of the Mansfield Recreation Department slow pitch softball playoffs has been rained out. It will now start on Tuesday.

Teams should call the recreation department for playing times. Trail Blazers sign center PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The Portland Trail Blazers announced Friday the signing of former University of Washington center Petur Gudmundsson to a multi-year contract. The 7-foot-2 Gudmundsson is expected to battle for the third-string center spot behind starter Mychal Thompson and backup Kevin Kunnert Gudmundsson, a native of Iceland, did not play professional basketball last season. His last season at Washington was 1979.

He earned his chance to make the Blazers' roster by his play in the Los Angeles Summer League. The Blazers also announced they had reached contract agreements with three rookies. They are guard Herb Andrew, a fifth-round choice from South Alabama; forward-center Peter Verhoeven, a fourth-round pick from Fresno State, and guard Julius Wayne, a seventh-round selection from Texas-El Paso. Wrestling coach needed MANSFIELD St. Peter's High School needs a certified teacher with a knowledgeable background in wrestling.

Battle for Ainge in court TORONTO (AP) A lawyer for the Toronto Blue Jays Friday denied a report that Danny Ainge, an infielder with the American League baseball club, had been promised before the National Basketball Association draft last June he could quit baseball and play basketball. Ainge was drafted by the Boston Celtics and the NBA team and the Blue Jays haveifiled suits against each other in a United States federal court. The Blue Jays contend they have a contract binding Ainge to baseball through its five-year term. A report Thursday in the Boston Globe quoted an affidavit Ainge filed in the court dispute saying he told the Blue Jays June 9 he was disenchanted with baseball and wanted to play basketball.

The report said Blue Jay officials at first told Ainge he would be released to play in the NBA. But Ainge then received a letter from a team lawyer informing him his contract prevented him from playing basketball. The Associated Press The college football season begins in high style today with Georgia starting defense of its 1980 national championship and Alabama's Bear Bryant trying to get one of the nine victories he needs to become the winningest coach in history. Michigan, Oklahoma and Notre Dame, ranked 1-2-3 in The Associated Press preseason poll, all will be idle until next weekend. However, fourth-ranked Alabama visits Louisiana State for a nationally televised (ABC-TV, 9 p.m., EDT) Southeastern Conference game; eighth-ranked Pitt, last year's runner-up, enter-thins Illinois, and Georgia, only No.10 in the preseason poll, is home against Tennessee in another SEC contest.

The rest of the Top Ten includes fifth-ranked Southern California, No.6 Nebraska, seventh-rated Penn State and No.9 Texas, all idle. Four members of the Second Ten will be in action. No.14 Mississippi State meets Memphis State at Jackson, No.16 Brigham Young visits Long Beach State, No.17 Florida seeks revenge for last year's embarrassment against Miami, in the Orange Bowl, and No.19 Florida State is home against Louisville. The rest of the Second Ten includes No.11 Ohio State, No.12 North Carolina, No.13 UCLA, No.15 Washington, No.18 Stanford and No.20 Arizona State. Despite the return of running back Herschel Walker, a sensation as a freshman last year, Georgia Coach Vince Dooley labels the Bulldogs' opener "a venture into the unknown." 'What I see right now is problems," Dooley says.

"Too many players have missed too much practice time, either because of injuries or summer school. People say we have a lot of depth, but sometimes that means you don't have any starters. The injuries are another thing. There are uncertainties everywhere. "And I just don't know about our motivation.

I can't see it. Last year, we had a bunch of fighters. I'm not sure these fellows this year have gotten there. I don't know what the personality of this team is yet." Georgia began its march to the 1980 crown by edging Tennessee 16-15 after trailing 15-0 before Dooley decided it was time to turn Walker "Tennessee is indeed the real darkhorse of the SEC this Year," Dooley warns. "They are in an excellent position.

They have great motivation and this is going to be a big year for Tennessee. Tennessee has the best; fastest corps of receivers in college football. And the thing that most concerns me is the fact that they will be putting that strength against our most critical weakness the defensive secondary." Bryant Is another worried coach. "I worry more about our team than LSO's," he says. "We are very young, not very big and certainly unproven in a number of critical areas." One of those is the reaction to crowds like that in LSO's Tiger Stadium, where fans love to express themselves noisily.

"I do enjoy the atmosphere in Tiger Stadium at night," Bryant says. "It is college football at its best Not many players on this year's team have played there before, though, and we'll have to wait and see how they react" Pitt faces a massive rebuilding job with 15 starters gone from last year, including three-time All-American defensive end Hugh Green, the Reisman Trophy rtmnerup; offensive tackle Mark May, the Outland Trophy winner, and fullback Randy McMillian, like Green and May a first-round NFL draft pick. Jaeger toppled in U.S. Open NEW YORK (AP) Andrea Leand, a 17-year-old amateur from Brooklandville, shocked second-seeded Andrea Jaeger 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 Friday in the U.S. Open tennis championships.

Chris Evert Lloyd, going for her sixth women's singles title in seven years, led a parade of seeded players into the third round. She had no problems eliminating fellow American Kate Latham 6-0, 6-1. In a day that saw most of the seeded players in action, fifth-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia downed Candy Reynolds 6-4, 8-4; No. 3 Tracy Austin crushed Betsy Nagelsen 6-3, 6-0; No.

Ratchford Jr. Supefintandent Of Inwrnce Of Ohio (Sept N.1111 130206) The Associated Press A year ago, the Oakland Raiders were being written off as a loser. They would finish last in the American Football Conference's West Division, the experts said.

Their pride and poise would be no more. On Sunday, the Raiders open the defense of the Super Bowl title they won last January. And, as more than one coach has pointed out, staying on top can be tougher than getting there. The Denver Broncos would like to be the first team to knock off the National Football League's maverick diampions. The Broncos are operating under new leadership, from the owners on down.

That includes Dan Reeves, the head coach imported from Dallas, where he had a hand in molding the complex multiple-set Offenses of the Cowboys. "I think it will take Denver some time to get it going, hopefully a lot longer than this week," said Coach Tom Flores of the Raiders. "But it doesn't mat ter what offense they're using, Denver is always tough. Defensively, they haven't changed a bit. They always give us all kinds of problems." Sunday's other games are Baltimore at New England, Dallas at Washington, Kansas City at Pittsburgh, Miami at St.

Louis, New Orleans at Atlanta, Philadelphia at the New York Giants, San Francisco at Detroit, Seattle at Cincinnati, Green Bay at Chicago, Houston at Los Angeles and the New York Jets at Buffalo. Monday night's game is San Diego at Cleveland. Tonight, Minnesota visits the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Oakland has virtually the same team which so soundly beat Philadelphia 27-10 in the Super Bowl after chalking up an 11-5 record, good enough for an AFC wild-card. "We haven't changed much in our approach from last year," said Flores.
