There is every incentive to produce to capacity in 1948. The rebuilding of grain reserves is a major goal, and we know Iowa farmers will do their part. but soil reserves need rebuilding too 1 Iowa soils are being depleted faster than in 1941. Erosion losses are too great. Fertility is being lowered, soil conditions are becoming poorer. A good soil management program is needed. The six points listed below are included in such a program. ^^^^^^^^— •-**-*---***:^^— — jp~ Check your 1948 cropping plans against these six points PUT LEGUMES IN THE ROTATION COMMER6IAL FERTIL IZER Strike a balance between .oil depleting tilled crop, and »od crops. Qats, leaume seeding, and corn *ive K ood return, for feriilizer. Strike a balance between .oil depleting tilled crop, and sod crops. Legume-grass maintains fertility and controls erosion. CONTOUR ON SLOPING LAND Contour farming save, soil and boost, yields immediately. Working on the level saves fuel and reduces machinery wear. SAVE AND USE MANURE One ton of manure equal. 100 pound, of 10-5-10 fertilizer. Spread manure on fields to be planted to corn this spring. Oats, legume seedings and corn give good returns for fertilizers used. Test soils to determine the grades to use. LIME FOR ACID SOILS Lime for acid soils is one of the best buys in 1948. Apply finely ground stone now, on land to be seeded in 1949. DRAINAGE AND TILLAGE Give poorly drained, level soils a chance by proper drainage. Cultivation aids soil, but avoid working when wet.
