Furniture manufacturers have turned out TV hassocks and chairs for us. Also portable TV trays to eat from while watching our favorite shows. ' The cloak and suit industry. during the earlier days of TV, was Quick to feature TV loung ing pajamas and other apparel suDDosedly designed to add pleasure to video vewing. In-recent months, the .frozen food packers have come along with the ready-to-serve TV dinner." These come packed m aluminum tins which are di vided into sections, similar to GI trays found in Army mess halls. They're complete dinners, with meat, potatoes and vege tables, and they sell for as low as 89 cents. There s no prepara tion necessary. You simply pop 'em into the oven for 23 min utes, and voila! Mama brngsH the TV dinners into the living room, plops 'em on the TV trays, and the entire family gets a beautiful case of heart burn, not . from the food but from watching Pinky Lee or an ancient "Our Gang Comedy" and trying to digest both at the same time. . ANTI-TV DINNERS Believe me, Ym not casting aspersions on the quality of the food in these TV dinners. As matter of fact, it's fairly tasty. Nor do I mean to make light of those cultural TV shows I mentioned. It's just ,that I'm against eating in front of a TV set. Most of us spend too much time watching TV anyway. Why ruin our stomachs as well as our dispositions? Mealtime used to offer us an excuse for getting away from the darned thing Now they are trying to take that sanctuary from us. However, I suppose it's still futile to stop progress. We probably wilt have to learn to live with this latest by-product of the TV age, so Im going to make some suggestions. VARIOUS ENTREES These TV dinners come in an assortment of entrees. There is chicken, turkey, roast beef, veal, ground beef, shrimp and ham. Now, as I see it, the kind of dinner purchased should have some bearing on the type of TV programs you're going to watch while gorging yourself. Obviously you are not get ting a balanced diet if you eat a ham dinner while watching Milton Berle. Munching ham with Uncle Milty would be tantamount to drinking gin with a gin chaser. I know a fellow who ate the chicken TV dinner while watch ing Liberace and thought the show and the chicken stunk. Yet his wife,, who had chosen roast beef, thought both the dinner and Liberace were just peachy. If the program you watch dur ing the evening meal turns out to be a turkey, which is accepted terminology for a flop show. then you certainly don t want to compound the felony by partaking of a turkey TV dinner. SPECIAL CUTLERY I suggest, too, that the pack agers of TV dinners include special cutlery. Plastic forks with shot,. blunt tines are a must. Then, if you accidentally stab yourself in the kisser while watching "Lassie" rescue Jeff Miller, the wound will be a rel atively minor one. Knives should be attached to the aluminum tins on a short chain. This will prevent serious injury should some member of the family suddenly go berserk when his favorite program' is vetoed by Junior. . Some really smart TV dinner maker is going to outsell all of his competitors by tossing in a free set of instruction; showing a suggested menu for each of the top shows. DwtWaTV Production Hailed as NEW' YORK, July 28 (fl Television attained one of its entertainment pinnacles Monday night when Producer's Showcase (NBC-TV) presented "The Four- poster," with Jessica Tandy and her husband, Hume Cronyn, in their original Broadway roles. The magnificent Cronyns were every husband and wife who last 35 years together. As in the stage production, they brought, mature, witty entertainment to the television screen. Director, cam eramen and stage designer deserve equal credit with them in causing an hour and a half to pass so enjoyably. While tossing bouquets to everyone concerned, let's not forget NBC, which had the difficult task of cutting 15 minutes playing time from the stage pro duction-It was done deftly with much of the original salt and savor of the lines retained. o o o The Fourposter appeared just 24 hours after an abyss of television entertainment. The occasion was the Variety hour (NBC-TV), when viewers were assaulted with one of the longest commercials ever seen on the television almost a solid hour. Jack Webb spent most of that hour touting his forthcoming musical movie, "Pete Kelly's Blues." It was one long plug for everybody, even including the recording company which will distribute songs from the film. The explanation of how the film was made was hopelessly tedious. This sort of thing is the mon strous offspring of the marriage of movies - and television. Unless somebody gets the point and does something about it, both television -and the movies will suffer. " o o o There's cause for interest in the production .of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson on Climax (KPIX) tonight at 8:30. After three movies and a least two stagings Stevenson's story is now making its television debut. It's heartening to see a TV program undismayed by the technical difficulties of adapting a first-rate story .to, the new medium. The technical difficulty in this case is in having one actor, Michael Rennie, play the dual-personality role : without any change of pausing for complicated makeup changes. An TV Station Fires j Bandleader Welk LOS ANGELES, July 28 UP) Bandleader Lawrence Welk has been fired by Television Station KTLA because "he refused to recognize his contract," the station announced today. This department took a closa look at correspondence between the producers and an authority . on Stevenson; Dr. Bradford A. Booth of the University of Cali fornia at Los .
