News Journal, Mansfield, 0. Sunday, June 28, 1987 4-b Sports Hal xSt Lebovitz vstl Eight birdies fly Azinger to the top Less work could mean fresh legs for Browns Golf i 1 from the money-winning lead last week when he missed the cut in the U.S. Open. Open winner Scott Simpson moved into the earnings lead, but is sitting out this tournament. Azinger, a lanky 27-year-old from Holyoke, has struggled, finishing no higher than 25th since winning the Las Vegas Invitational in May.

"The reason I shot so well today was because my driver set me up," Azinger said. "Every tee shot was solid, right where I wanted it." Heavy rain interrupted play for 1 hour, 40 minutes before the leaders teed off, and it rained through most of the afternoon. Aki Ohmachi of Tokyo was disqualified when he began play before the siren sounded to officially resume the tournament. RICHARD LEADS LPGA EVENT: Deb Richard shot a 1-over-par 73 Saturday but managed to hold a one-stroke lead over Lori Garbacz after three rounds of the LPGA's $300,000 Rochester International tournament. Richard, who has held the lead since the first round, bogeyed the last two holes to finish at 8-under-par 208 for three rounds.

Laurie Rinker and Patty Sheehan were one behind Garbacz at six under, while Susan Tonkin, Shirley Furlong and Sally Little entered Sunday's final round at five under. consider one for the Coliseum eventually. I like the concept and the low overhead." When I asked a sports fan, "What do you th ink about the Force firing Al Miller (their general manager)?" he replied, 'Who's Al Tells you something about the sport's impact. AND FINALLY: When Gib Shanley moves back to town he'll do more work for WQAL-104 FM. Presently he does a five-minute morning sports review for that station.

He also will cut several commercials and a radio packager is now selling a program called "Browns' Breaks," short features on the team with Gib at the Corrigan is expected to be named the sports anchor on WUAB-Channel 43 for the station's new nightly news show. Gib may be used on weekends or when Corrigan is doing Cavs and Indians games. Gib was in the running for the Los Angeles Clippers' play-by-play spot and when someone else was selected last week he decided to return to Cleveland where be was warmly greeted during his week as a sub for Pete Franklin. When Franklin fully recovers he intends to write a book with the help of Terry Pluto, author of several speaking of books, Indians' catcher Rick Dempsey is keeping a diary, which he started in Baltimore, and hopes to have it strike by NFL players now appears highly Browns won't cut any more veterans until after camp starts, but they won't carry fringe players very the Indians dropped their Batavia rookie league farm in favor of one in Burlington they are still supplying Batavia, now a co-op Browns' Dan Fike was married in Detroit well and see you somewhere, I hope. CROMWELL.

Conn. (AP) Paul Azinger, benefitting from pin-point accuracy, shot an 8-under-par 63 on a rainy Saturday to take a three-stroke lead over Wayne Levi after three rounds of the $700,000 Sammy Davis Jr Hartford Open. Azinger, the PGA Tour's No. 2 money-winner, birdied the third through fifth holes, added birdies on Nos. 7, 10 and 11, then closed his round with birdies on 17 and 18.

His bogey-free round fell one stroke short of the course record set by last year's tournament winner, Mac O'Grady. "It was by far the best round of my life," Azinger said. "Every drive I hit went exactly where I wanted. Every iron I hit went exactly where I wanted." Azinger was at 16-under-par 197 after three rounds over the par-71, Tournament Players Club of Connecticut course. His score through three rounds was two shots better than the previous 54-hole standard for the tournament, established In 1984 by Peter Jacobsen.

Levi, the first-round leader, shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday and was at 200. West German Bernhard Langer, the 36-hole leader, faltered to a 1-over-par 72 to drop into a tie with Gene Sauers at 202. Sauers had a 68 Saturday. Dan Forsman, John Inman and Robert Lohr were all at 203, 10 under par and six strokes off the lead, Inman and Lohr each shot 67s and Forsman had a 69. Gil Morgan and Tim Simpson, with 67s, and Doug Tewell, with a 68, were at 204.

Open runner-up Tom Watson had a 70 and was among three players at 205. Azinger, who tied for third in last year's Greater Hartford Open, fell (MM Complete GUM 'Cftf tr Centers STARTING GATE: Deep thinking Marty Schottenheimer, a workaholic himself, plans less work for the Cleveland Browns during the upcoming summer training camp. The coach has been trying to fathom the reason for the team's terribly slow start in recent seasons and has come to a conclusion to "save the players' legs" for the games that count. He now Is devising a program which "will get things done but let's not come out tired." The Browns finished an excellent 12-4, but had to overcome a miserable 1-2 start. The third game, especially, was.

a disaster, the Thursday night walloping at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals, whom the Browns later handled it wasn't only the past season. The Browns opened 1-2 in 1985 and 0-3 in 1984. One coach, Bud Grant, always took his players to camp later than other coaches and his Vikings were ready qt the start of the season. His successor, Jerry Burns, has followed the same pattern and now that Buddy Hyan is a head coach, he is taking bis team to camp later on Aug. later than any other club.

The Browns are coming in just two days earlier than the Eagles, resulting in a camp a week shorter than in the past This is a major departure for Marty, whose creed always has been "hard work pays off." The modifications this summer may be imperceptible to the players but their legs will remain fresh, he hopes. Some of the changes in addition to tjie later start: Camp at Lakeland Community College will close Aug. 28, giving the players two full weeks at Baldwin-Wallace before the season opens, Sept. 13. At B-W, there really is only one practice session on the field.

The other is a skull session. Thus it becomes the same 9 to job it is during the season. The B-W workouts are considerably less strenuous than those at Lakeland. "Only two night summer sessions, each lasting two another cutback. These have been scheduled for Aug.

5 and Aug. 12 at Willoughby South High. Although there will be two-a-day practices at Lakeland, during the final two weeks there, one daily session will be in shorts, again meaning less strenuous physical activity. The veterans first two-a-day workouts will begin Aug 2nd and will last just two weeks, rather than the usual three. No rookie scrimmage against the Buffalo Bills or anybody else.

Instead there will be just one scrimmage against the Bills, at Edinboro State College. It will be held after the veterans report, on Aug. 8. This means the rookies will see most of the actio giving the vets comparatively more rest. It always was Paul Brown's creed: Never leave the game on the practice field.

Now Marty has concluded the Browns were trying too hard BEFORE the season and he is going to try to harness himself as well as the team and save it for the game. NO NAMES PLEASE: Joe Klein, the Cleveland Indians' veep in charge of personnel, was slightly shook when this corner interpreted his remark that Eddie Williams, the third baseman at Buffalo, will be ready to play for the Indians next season as meaning Brook Jacoby will be on the block for the pitching talent the Indians desperately need. He doesn't deny players will be available for trade but adds, "You can't earmark any player. Just because Williams is a third baseman doesn't mean you can earmark Brook as the one to be traded. Brook also can play left field, first base or DH.

He's flexible. We'll trade the player or players who bring us the best deal." I Klein also mentioned Jay Bell as me who will be ready next season. Bell's best position here would be the outfield or second base. "He played second for as in the Instructional League," said Klein, "and we know he could play that position." The Indian! will need a second baseman next season. Tony Bernazard has to hit a PRICES GOOD THRU JULY 4, 1987 JAY BELL ton to make up for his lack of range in the field.

And because of Jacoby's lack of range and speed I'm still saying the Indians will shop him around although I don't think he alone will command a quality pitcher in exchange. ARM'S LENGTH: Klein admits that because of the Indians' pitching shortage he jumps at a good minor league performance the way a drowning man grabs at a life preserver. Still, he thinks the Indians made a 10-strike in signing David Oliveras, an 18-year old from Puerto Rico. "Luis Isaac and Orlando Gomez, two men in our oganization found him and signed him," said Klein. "I saw him pitch for Burlington the other night.

And even though it's not hard for a pitcher to impress me right now he really popped my eyes. We may have something there." Two high draft choices also have come out of the box quickly. Tommy Kurlzewski, from Michigan State, had a perfect three-inning start at Burlington and Carl Keliipuelole, the Brigham Young pitcher, a Hawaiian native, has a 1.08 ERA at Waterloo. Sure it's straining to talk about baby pitchers but what else have we got to gab about right now? Which is the real Greg Swindell, the one we saw at the end of last season or the one who's struggling now? "His arm is sound," says Klein. "His only problem now is the location of his curve ball.

The last four or five times out he's put it in the wrong spots and the result was home runs." Doc Edwards, who works with the pitchers in the bullpen, says, "I still see Swindell as a 20-game winner. I remember when I first caught Catfish Hunter in the bullpen. Art Fowler, the pitching coach, came by and said, 'He's going to be a 20-game I was amazed. 'What do you I asked. 'He has good motion, there is movement on his ball and most of the time he puts it right where he wants it.

When he is able to do that consistently he'll win 20 And this was even before Catfish was in the majors. I see the same thing in was Edwards who kept saying throughout April and May that the Indians "will be in the race when this season ends. I hope he's more correct about Swindell. CEILING: The acquisition of Jim Paxson from Portland for Keith Lee has put the handcuffs on the Cleveland Cavaliers with respect to future trade s. Paxson's annual salary, almost $1 million, has put them close to the salary cap.

That's why they are in poor position now to go for a free agent such as Purvis Short. Lee was making less than half Paxson's figure. If the Cavs could get someone to take on Turpin's $1 million pact they'd be able to make more moves for veterans but nobody will touch Turpin. And even if the Cavs offer to pay part of Turpin's salary the total amount remains their responsibility when the salary cap is now appears the Cav will have to hang onto Turpin until he can be moved in the expansion draft next EDDIE WILLIAMS year. And the only way they will be able to get an expansion club to take him would be by giving Mel plenty of playing time this season.

And with Lee gone, he figures to get it. So whether they want to or not, the Cavs will have to play Turpin this to some who have trashed Lee, I think he is an NBA player and will do well at Portland. He'll be around when Paxson is gone, because of the difference in age. But the latter fills a need now an outside Cavs were going to bring Paxson here for an interview but discovered he's in Monte Carlo for the NBA Players Association convention. How's that for a spot for a meeting? Not even the owners go there.

Shows who has the money in the pros. BAGGED I have no serious complaint about the Cavs' selection of Kevin Johnson in the first round. He has long arms, thus plays fairly tall, is intelligent and quick and a conscientious young man. He'll make a contribution. Fans will like his style.

But I'll be greatly surprised if he beats out John Bagley. I think Johnson will be given the job, but within a month Bagley will have won it back. Several clubs are eager to snatch Bagley if the Cavs decide to let him go. But right now, they don't dare. Although this space was the first to predict the Cavs' would draft Johnson and then backed off when they began to make overtures for Rickey Green, the veteran Utah guard I would have taken Derrick McKee over Johnson.

I never expected McKee to be available when the Cavs had their turn. It happened when the Bulls took Scottie Pippin in order to trade him to Seattle. I saw McKee play for Alabama. It's true that he's skipping his senior year and, therefore, is considered raw, but within a couple of years he's going to be one of the better small forwards in the game. When I saw him in the NCAA playoffs against Pittsburgh, somehow he always was there to make the big basket.

He gets excellent position on the boards, can jump and has fine timing. Three years from now he will be a greater NBA contributor than Johnson, and this is no knock against the latter. That the Cavs went for Johnson means they decided they couldn't make a deal, probably because of the salary cap, for Rickey Green. And they didn't expect McKee to be available so didn't do as much homework on him as they did on Johnson. NEW GAME: Las Vegas already is making odds on the games in the new Arena Football League and the betting has been surprisingly brisk.

This has caused some wise sports heads to think the league has a real chance to become a permanent fixture. One pointed out, "Already there seems to be more interest in it than in the Major Indoor Soccer League." Vegas doesn't make a line on MISL games, except for the playoffs. One Cleveland money man said, "I'd put a franchise in this town right now if we had a downtown arena. I might even LOWEST PRICES GUARANTEED! Buy with confidence.
