15-20 with an off day on Feb. 18, a Sunday. 'Don't Quote Me' By JOHNNY JANES The Royal Theory Darrell Royal, the University of Texas football coach who has been somewhat more than successful in his five seasons at Austin, probably never will admit that there really is place In football for the forward pass. More than likely that is because the 37-year-old coach always has been one to study statistics before making plans and he has this to say about the figures on passing: "Every time you throw that ball only three things can happen and two ot them are bad." That is, the odds are 2-1 that there will be an interception or an Incomplete instead ol a completion. Last season Royal's Longhorns earned share of the South- west Conference championship, a 12-7 victory over Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl and an overall 10-1 record with deft use of the pass.

In those games they passed almost twice as often as in previous seasons. Does that mean Royal no longer has his personal peeve against the pass, except as a desperation measure? "Well, I guess I've learned to live with it," the coach replied but at the time he looked as worried as a man being touched for a loan by a brother-in-law who had been unemployed, by choice, for the last 10 years. No doubt he was thinking of those bad things that can happen when the ball is thrown. Only 9 Seniors But-- Numerically, the Longhorns lost little from the great 1961 team that was undefeated through eight games until upset by TCU on a Sonny Gibbs pass that escaped the two bad things that can happen to passes. Barring grade upsets, all but nine of last season's team will return.

Individually, however, those few losses are frightful. "We had wonderful leadership from our co-captains, Mike Gotten and Don Talbert," Royal explained. "Then there were Bob Moses and David Kristynik and the other seniors. All of them gave inspiration to our younger, less experienced boys. "Then there were the individual stars we lose.

How can anyone replace James Saxton? I doubt that there ever was one like him before, so how can we expect to find another? And Jack Collins--we are going to find it difficult to find somebody who can block like he blocked for us last season, in addition to catching passes." Only Time Will Tell Of course, a lot of coaches would enjoy having Royal's worries over replacing only nine seniors. To those that lost two top units, that would be like having to walk a mile to the bank to deposit a million bucks. With Jerry Cook and Tommy Ford as replacements for Saxton, Johnny Genung and Duke Carlisle ready to fill in for Gotten at quarterback and a huge personnel pool handy from which other replacements may be drawn, Texas certainly will field another good team in 1962. Whether Royal and his staff will, have another great team remains to be seen. The final label could depend on what happens when Genung and Carlisle throw the ball into the air in an effort to get to the other end of the field in a hurry.
