Mrs. Kathrine Kirk Wilson (Mrs. Horace E. Wilson) has been named chairman of the board of directors of White Kirk, and will serve in ah executive capacity with the new management. The full composition of the new board has not beeh completed.

Sakowitz, which was founded in Galyeston in 1905, has four outlets in the Houston area. Caufield said White Kirk chose Sakowitz from its severa" merger candidates "because the Kirk and White families were desirous of continuing the personalized service the family- owned organizations can give a community." Sakowitz, it was noted, is one of the few remaining family-held major corporations in the speciality store field of retailing. Access to the Amarillo area's high per capita income terested Sakowtii in the Panhandle community, officials said. "Vie feel we understand the fashion i Southwesterners extremely well and White Kirk has beeh a fine fashion name for many years in the High Plains of Texas," said Bernard Sakowitz. "It is an excellent opportunity to expand the fashion services we presently offer, and White Kirk presently carries many of the same fine quality labels and designer names that Sakowitz offers." "This is the first step in what we hope will be a new type of retailing organization group -that of only high fashion specialty stores with previous family ownership," Robert Sakowitz, executive vice president of the Houston firm, said.

"We do know that you have heard rumors over the past few weeks regarding White Kirk and today we can say we have become a part of tile Sakowitz organization," Mrs. Wilsoh said after being introduced as chairman of the new board. "We are really and truly happy and feel this merger will be great for Amarillo and the Panhandle." She also emphasized that Sakowitz management believes firmly in the value of downtown operations. No announcement was made regarding the financial considerations involved in the merger. The pioneer Amarillo store came into being in May 1897, as White's Cash Store, at Hie corner of 6th and Polk, now occupied by the 10-story Barfield Building.

Managed by the late E. W. White, the store was on the lower floor of a two-story, red-painted frame and sheet- iron structure. It was in every sense general store for the pioneer Panhandle country with hitching-rack out front and potbellied stove and the traditional cracker barrel in prime locations inside. White's shared the original building with the Masonic Hall.

A few years later, White's introduction of a women's ready- to-wear department, set the pat tern for what was to follow. The name White Kirk was adopted in 1903. In 1910 the store's grocery department was closed, shortly thereafter other general merchandise disappeared from shelves. At that point in the company's ustory the store became essentially a women's store and started building its reputation as one of the finest in the Panhandle. The store continued to carry children's clothing in its inventory and most men's items except suits.

It's inventory of men's suits was cleared out with Easter specials of $20 and $25 per suit in 1909. For more than half a century, until 1963, the store continued to operate almost exclusively in ie women's lines. Then the pat was changed again, with addition of a full-line men's store under management of John E. Ekelund, veteran in the field. The downtown store, which lad moved Into its present four- story building in 1938, was ex- andei northward to make for the new men's department.

The department was ex- landed again in 1967 when it van merged with Trolingcr- Smith. Tuesday, a group of boys attending the YMCA day camp, approximately 18 i southwest of Amarillo, uncovered from 20 to 25 buried coins resembling Spanish gold and silver pieces. The boys and their counselor were digging a hole for a campfire when they discovered most of Uie coins under a tree. Further digging turned up one more corn before the boys left the camp for the day.
