Irl Friday, April 12, 1985 Newt Journal, Mansfield, O. Focus: entertainment 7-b 'A-Team' blasts to top of ratings in thin field NBC averaged a prime-time rating of 16.0, compared with CBS' 15.4 and ABC's 15.2 during the week. With two weeks left in the 30- CBS series: "Murder, She Wrote," "Simon Simon," "Crazy Like A Fox" and "Magnum, P.I." Part 2 of "A was ninth and ABC's "Hotel," 10th. It was not a typical week because "A.D." pre-empted NBC's The Cosby Show," 1985's most popular series, while CBS broadcast the movie "Stormin' Home," which was 41st out of 61 shows, instead of the hit series "Dallas" and "Falcon Crest." CBS, which has won 20 weeks this season, also was hurt by the poor performance of the movie "Guilty Conscience," which ranked 53rd. NBC's three-hour movie, "Florence Nightingale," starring Jaclyn Smith, was a major disappointment, finishing 52nd.

With R. Ewing out of the way, ABC and NBC placed five Friday shows in the Top 30. ABC had "Webster" (No. 23), "Mr. Belvedere" (27th) and "Benson" (28th).

NBC's "Knight Rider" was 24th, and "Miami Vice" was 30th. Last week's newly introduced series did not excite viewers. ABC's "Me and Mom" ranked 44th, one notch ahead of CBS' "Lucie Arnaz Show." Biggest problem was lighting the moonscape. Theatrical lighting from overhead would produce three shadows, an impossibility on the moon.

So technicians devised a single lighting source by concentrating a great bundle of light bulbs into a huge cardboard cone and aiming it at the astronauts. The result: One shadow from each figure and one reflection on their respective face shields. Hollywood magic! For all its technical accuracy, "Space" is not a hardware show. It's a solid story that builds to a gripping climax in outer space in the final episode. "Space" begins Sunday night from 8 to 11 and continues in alternating two and three-hour episodes each night through Thursday.

He says TV is the best medium for the small drama and admits that it may be a throwback to the old days when that's all TV really was small, intimate slices of life. Marsha Norman's play "The Laundromat" is such a drama. It is basically a two-character play set in the confines of a laundromat in the middle of the night Altman feels that Burnett is one of the best actresses around, and he thinks she managed to do the most honest work she has ever done on film in "Laundromat" He also had high praise for Madigan whom he cast without really knowing her work that well. Bill Barrett A Nothing indifferent about Altman "Space," a liberal adaptation for television of James A. Michener's massive novel, will occupy most of CBS's evening hours next week.

Despite a somewhat delayed ignition in the opening episode Sunday night this engrossing mix of drama, daring and romance is well worth your time and attention details here later this weekend. If you're a Michener fan, however, and especially if you've read the book, you may grumble a bit this make-believe story about the early years of the U.S. space effort takes some startling liberties with the author's work. On the other hand, be assured that James A. Michener, having banked the TV-rights payment is delighted with the show.

So am I. "Space" cost more than $33 million to make. Much of that went for special effects which, in space-walk and man-on-the-moon scenes, fooled even NASA experts who thought they were watching stock film of past space glories. So we were told by members of the production staff with whom we met in Washington last month. And having seen all 13 hours of this five-chapter story, we TV critics were ourselves startled to learn that we were watching innovative techniques and not film made of some real space mission.

For instance, the surface of the "moon" (constructed on a huge Hollywood sound stage) is composed of dry powdered cement and Kitty Litter. It crumbles and puffs dust like the real thing under the shoes of the astronauts. The actors, wearing genuine space suits, move in that slow and cautious and often awkward manner we recall from the televised moon walks no slow-motion cameras were used. Invisible wires, of course, lift the actor in the space-walk scene. But bow do they make his "umbilical cord" appear to float in space? Why, with big balloons full of helium tethered up near the sound-stage ceiling and out of camera range, that's how.

The balloons are attached to the lifeline between astronaut and space ship. The lunar vehicle they used in "Space" had to be specially constructed for the film because the real ones, built for low-gravity conditions, would collapse under the weight of the actors. king Features Syndicate Robert Altman began in TV as a director many years ago. One of his first jobs was an "Alfred Hitchcock Show." He has since gone on to movie-legend fame with his films "M'A'S'H," "Nashville," "McCabe and Mrs. Miller," "Thieves Like Us," and "Streamers." In between, he has had a string of flops such as "Popeye" and "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean." No other director in recent memory has been consistently singled out in print for lis flops as well as his hits.

It always seems to be open season when it comes to Altman. The man seems to be mildly amused by it alL He recently directed "The Laundromat" for HBO. The.
