His death in the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, ended a seven-year fight against creeping paralysis. Brown, a former Marine Corps corporal, was disabled when his outfit landed on Bougainville in 1942. He suffered a spinal injury from which the paralysis developed. He was admitted to Mayo Clinic in 1947 after earlier treatment in several service hospitals. In the widely-heralded opera-1 tion last July 10 inches of Browns spinal cord were removed in a seven-hour operation that required the combined skills of 20 surgeons.

The operation was performed on Brown only after a series of experiments on animals was carried out successfully. Brown recovered sufficiently to spend last Christmas at his home here but he suffered a recurrence of the affliction and returned to Minnesota in February for further surgery. The body will be returned here for services.
