TUESDAY. AUGUST 10, 1948 THE AMARILLO GLOBE. TEXAS Landing Skis For Air Force WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 U.R-- A new type retractable ski land- Ing (ear for use In the Arctic has been developed for the Air Force. The ski will tremendously increase the mobility of Air Force planes.

Since Air Force defense planes envision development of an Inter-locking system by lighter bases across the northern lid on the North American continent, ski- equipped planes would be invaluable In such a setup. The first installation of the new retractable skies was on a Fairchlld C-82 flying boxcar at the Dayton, Ohio, test center. "These skis will make air transportation available to snow-covered arifields and Arctic areas heretofore inaccessible with conventional landing gear," the Air Torce said. The skis will permit landings on either snow or concrete runways. Wheels protrude through a cut-out portion in the center of the main skis which are 16 feet long and four feet wide.

There is a nose ski. The entire landing gear is retractable but not completely, into the wheel well. There is some slight loss of pay load and slight reduction of cruising speed as a result of this. But this is offset by the fact that the, plane to equipped can operate into! many areas closed to planes with conventional landing gear. TRUMAN'S FOOD TASTER Prohibition Slate Drawn HOUSTON, Aug.
