Sunday, December I79 8A 11 Levi Strauss official dies SAN FRANCISCO (UP1) Ser-vices will be held Monday for Walter A. Haas 90, retired chah man of the Levi Strauss the firm that made blue Jeans fashionable worldwide. Haas, who died in his sleep Friday, grew up in San Francisco and was graduated from the University of California In 1910 with a bachelor's degree in literature. He later worked for several financial institutions and his father's wholesale grocery business. In 1914 he married Elsie Stern, grand-niece of Levi Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant who sold canvas pants to gold miners that came to called "Levis," a name that endured but did not become a trademark until a century later.

Haas joined the Strauss company at his father-in-law's suggestion. He said he started "pretty well at the top." The firm was ailing, and Haas, a man who paid attention to detail, helped turn it around with establishment of a cost-accounting system. He is survived by his wife, Marian Pendleton, Mendocino; his daughters, Lindsey Busch, Arizona; Andrea Judge, Oregon, and Janet Sheppard, Idaho; and his son, Mike Pendleton, Caspar. Fortier COMPTCHE Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mendocino Catholic Cemetery for Joseph J. Fortier, 56, who died at his Comptche home Friday. A native of Fresno, he had been a professor of psychology at the University of Maryland and taught at its branch in Germany before moving here two years ago. He was a WWII U.S.

Army veteran. He is survived by, his wife, Ar-deth Fortier, Comptche; his father, Waldo Fortier, Fresno; and nine children. Burial will be under the direction of Cannarr-Fairlee Funeral Home. Manuel S. Avila FORT BRAGG Services will be at 10 a.m.

Monday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church for Manuel S. Avila, 91, Fort Bragg, who died Friday at a hospital here. A native of St. George Islands in the Azores, he was a Fort Rragg resident 68 years. He owned a produce farm and cattle feed ranch He was a member of the I'PEC and IDES lodges and a past president of the Pentecost Society.

He is survived by his wife, Isabel Avila, and his son, August Avila, both of Fort Bragg; his daughter, Mary Langford, Oxnard; his sister, Maria Renda, Willits, and three grandchildren. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today at the Cannarr-Fairlee Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rose Memorial Park. Abbie Dawson SONOMA Services for Abbie (Jewel) Dawson, 5fi, will be held at Cobbtown, Georgia.

She died Friday at a Sonoma hospital. 1 She was a native of Georgia and lived in Sonoma Valley for 23 years. She was a postal clerk at Vineburg post office for ten years. She is survived by her husband, Nick Dawson, Sonoma; her daughters. Sandra Morgantini, Sonoma; and Sharlynn Benzon, Rohnert Park; her mother, Mae Moore, Beasley, five brothers and a sister, all of Georgia; and by three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held later at the chapel of Bates, Evans and Fehrensen. Contributions to donor's favorite charity are preferred by the family.
