THE! LocalOhio TUESDAY, October 13, 1998 Page 5 A Pumpkin By TM ASSOCIATED PRESS Heavy rains that flooded farm fields in northern Ohio this summer also played a nasty Halloween trick on the state's pumpkin crop, leaving many farmers with fields full of rotting gourds. pickings are slim A dry spring and a rainy summer combined with high temperatures left thousands of pumpkins rotting with insects and disease, said Mike Pullins, executive director of the Ohio Fruit Growers Society. "They're just a very sensitive crop," Pullins said. In west-central Ohio, though, fields are brimming with pumpkins, leaving the state with a slightly below average crop, said Bob Preacher, a fruit and vegetable specialist with Ohio State University. Despite the subpar season, pumpkin prices haven't gone up in most markets and groceries, because stores often sell them cheaply to draw customers.

And there still should plenty to go around. This year, customers just won't have the selection to choose from, Pullins said. Prices should hold steady because many farmers agree on a set price before the season, he said. Dave Gress, general manager of The Fruit Growers Marketing Association in northeast Ohio, says stores are almost giving them away. He has seen prices for 20 pounders as low as $2.99.

Most farmers will get an average of 10 cents per pound on pumpkins. The association, a coalition of smaller fruit growers, expects to ship 50 to 60 tractor-trailer loads of pumpkins, but Gress said he could sell twice as many pumpkins if they were available. Shooting from Page 1A -5 came into the sheriff's office and police department alerting them to the shooting. Robbins said one of them came from Tanner's home, and another from a home on Oak Street. After hearing the shots, Tanner's son ran to a friend's house on Oak Street to call for help.

Robbins said. "Apparently, his son woke up when he heard the commotion downstairs," he said. "This was the second call about those people." Robbins said there are no other suspects in the shooting. Both men have prior arrest records. Ball had been arrested on charges of having a firearm in liquor establishment; and Tanner on charges of criminal damaging and domestic violence.

Tanner was discharged Sunday from Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He could not be reached for comment. Ball was being held in Marion City Jail until his arraignment when bond will be set.
