Following Givens' return to the Western 16, Scimeca capped the short drive with his scoring toss to Summers. The ensuing defensive struggle finally gave way to the Green field goal in the third period.

Bobby Howard got the Broncos on the board with 10: 11 left in the game on an 8-yard touchdown run. But two late Western chances ended with an incomplete fourth down pass on the Bobcat 27 and a fumbled punt with 1 :01 left. Ohio is now 2-5 overall, while Western is 6-2 on the year. 'Champ9 champ CLEVELAND (AP) Southwood Champ ran to an easy victory Saturday, beating favorite In Rem by eight and one-half lengths in the $26,275 North Randall Handicap for three-year-old colts at Thistledown Racetrack. Southwood Champ, trained by Jim Morgan and ridden by Tommy Meyers, led all the way.

In Rem made one bid, then fell back. The winner earned $15,765 as he ran the mile and 116 in 1:44 2-5. The Trifecta of Party Garb (6), Twist the Dawn (8) and Ariga (9) returned $459.90 on 165 winning tickets. The crowd of 5,853 persons wagered a total of $748,345. plays, 78-75, Central Michigan outgained the home team, 492-268.

Todd ran for 128 yards in 21 carries. Mike Wright, leading the MAC in total offense going into the game, was held to 108 yards passing and 42 rushing. Jeff Groth of Bowling Graen broke Ed Jones' record of 119 career receptions. The new mark is 120. Central Michigan now is 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the MAC, while BG is 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.

OhioU 10 W.Michigan 7 KALAMAZOO, Mich. (UPI) A 56-yard Jim Givens punt return set up Mike Scimeca's 2-yard touchdown pass to John Summers Saturday and Steve Green added a 22-yard field goal to give Ohio University a 10-7 upset victory over Western Michigan in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio, in winning only its second MAC game in five tries, held star Bronco tailback Jerome Persell to 88 yards on 24 ,1 y. TOLEDO (UPI) Tailback Mark Hunter rushed for 156 yards in 21 carries while scoring one touchdown as he and quarterback Larry Fortner led Miami to a 28-7 Mid American Conference victory over Toledo Saturday. Fortner scored twice on runs of 1 1 and 18 yards.

Hunter raced 30 yards in the first quarter for the first half's only touchdown. Defensive back Alvin Hall picked off a pass by Toledo quarterback Mo Hall and returned the ball 57 yards for Miami's final touchdown in the last period. The Rockets' touchdown came on a three-yard run by Mo Hall in the third quarter as Toledo cut the Redskins' lead to 14-7 before the two fourth quarter touchdowns by Miami put the game away. The Rockets had a chance to tie the game in the third quarter when they recovered a Miami fumble at the Redskins 26. Miami, however, threw the Rockets for losses of 9 and 11 yards on the next two plays.

In the first half Toledo dominated the statistics, outgaining the Redskins 140 to 61 yards. However, fumbles on their first two possessions kept Toledo from doing any damage. Toledo had eight first downs to four for Miami, outrushed the Redskins 86 to 40 yards and had a 54-21 advantage in passing yardage. Miami now is 5-2-1 overall and 3-2 in the MAC, while Toledo fell to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the loop. Central Michigan 38 Bowling Green 7 BOWLING GREEN (UPI) Central Michigan, sparked by Gary Hogeboom, scored the first three times it had the ball and rolled on to a 38-7 Mid-American Conference win over Bowling Green Saturday.

Hogeboom ran five yards for a TD and Willie Todd a yard for another tally in the opening period, and teammate Tim Parker took a nine-yard pass from Hogeboom for the third tally. The host Falcons' Mike Wright tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to John Park to cut the deficit to 21-7 at half-time. The visitors' Rade Savage booted a 45-yard field goal in the third period and his team then added two touchdowns while successfully defending its goal line in the last half. Todd ran 49 yards for a third period score and freshman Mike Ball raced 63 yards in the last quarter, for another one. Freshman tailback Reggie Mitchell, making his first start for Central Michigan, ran for 165 yards as the Chippewas piled up 435 yards while holding the Falcons to 126.

CMU relied on its ground game, passing only six times, completing half of them, while the Falcons took the air 34 times, with 15 connections. W. Grove City Saturday in a 28-0 victory over winless Oberiin. Christ scored on runs of five yards din the first quarter, one yard in the second quarter and one yard in the third quarter. Gary Peterson ran one yard for a Wolverines touchdown in the first period. Grove City, 4-2-1, intercepted the Yeomen, 0-7, six times.

Marietta 17 Otterbein 3 MARIETTA (AP) Tailback Mark Boy rushed for 101 yards and one touchdown as Marietta defeated Otterbein 17-3 in an Ohio Conference Blue Division football game Saturday. The homecoming victory was the Pioneers' first in four conference games and gave them a 4-3 record overall. Otterbein now is 1-2-1 in the league and 24-1 for all games. Marietta quarterback Tom Havranek completed seven passes for 129 yards, three of them to Sam Reynolds for a total of 70 yards. Wabash 6 Kenyon 3 CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.

Ziebart, who left the game in the third period, completed first half touchdown passes of 6 yards to Steve Hoog and 1 yard to Cormac Carney. Three of Kent State's fumbles came in the final period, giving Air Force the ball on the Golden Flashes' 19, 35, 19. But the Falcons were only able to capitalize for points once. The Falcons also were unable to score on a first-and-goal at the Kent State three and Sturch missed field goals from the 38, 48 and 56. The Flashes, with Stafford pounding up the middle for good yardage, took the opening kickoff 75 yards in eight plays for their only touchdown.

Stafford, who carried five times in the drive for 40 yards, capped it with his 4-yard burst around left end. Delany had fumbled in the drive on the Air Force 35, but center Jeff Hrenya recovered to keep the drive alive. A Kent State procedure penalty on the Falcons' next drive helped Air Force to its first touchdown. Capital 7 Wooster 0 COLUMBUS (AP) A pass by quarterback Chad Raymond to wingback Luis Mejuto provided the winning points as Capital trimmed Wooster 7-0 Saturday in a tight defensive college football game. The victory assurred Capital of second place in the Ohio Conference Blue Division with a 3-1 record.

The Crusaders are 5-2 overall. The touchdown play came with 12:16 remaining in the game and capped a 90-yard, 11-play drive. Grove City 28 Oberiin 0 GROVE CITY, Pa. (UPI) George Christ scored three touchdowns for ADA AP) Running back Roger An-drachik scampered 49 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give Baldwin-Wallace a come-from-behind 7- 3 victory over Ohio Northern in Ohio Conference college football action Saturday. The win clinched first place in the conference's Red Division for Baldwin-Wallace, which will face Blue Division champion Wittenberg for the conference title on Nov.

11. Andrachik rushed for 178 yards in 20 carries, outgaining the entire Ohio Northern team on the ground by 73 yards. The Ohio Northern score came on a second-quarter field goal by Chris Kubbs. Baldwin-Wallace is now 4-4 in the conference and 7-0 overall. Ohio Northern drops to 2-2 in the league and 3- 4 overall.

Wittenberg ......34 Muskingum ....10 NEW CONCORD (UPI) Senior tailback Dave Merritt rushed for 143 yards and one touchdown Saturday to lead Wittenberg to a 34-10 Ohio Conference Blue Division win over Muskingum, assurring the Tigers a' sixth straight berth in the OC championship game at Berea Nov. 11. Quarterback Chuck Delaney passed for two touchdowns to Cliff Davis of 22 and 55 yards to break open a 3-0 first quarter lead. Muskingum answered the first Davis touchdown with a 38-yard field goal by Jamie Morckel to cut the deficit to 10-3 at halftime, but the second Delaney to Davis' TD early in the third quarter sent the undefeated Tigers to their seventh straight victory this season. The loss dropped the Muskies to 1-3 in the division and 24-1 overall.

Air Force ......26 Kent State 10 AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (UPI) Quarterback Dave Ziebart threw for two touchdowns and the Air Force Academy converted seven Kent State turnovers into 13 more points Saturday to score a 26-10 victory and snap a five-game losing streak. Kent State scored the first two times it had the ball on a 4-yard run by J.C. Stafford and a 26-yard field goal by Lou Caracci. But otherwise the Golden Flashes were unable to move the ball.

The Falcons recovered seven of eight Kent State fumbles, three each by fullback Doug West and quarterback Tom Delany, but were able to convert only three of them into points.
