Sunday, September 25, 1988 News Journal, Mansfield, 0. Sports 7-d Farrell buys Cleveland home ,4 CLEVELAND Cleveland Indians pitcher John Farrell has bought a home in Cleveland, making him the only Indians player to make his offseason home here. Farrell will work for the Indians in the off-season making special appearances. The last Tribe player to live in Cleveland was Pat Tabler, who was traded to Kansas City a few months after moving into his house. SURPRISE MOVE: Several members of the Indians watched the Yankees-Red Sox game on TV yesterday in which, to the shock of everyone, Boston Manager Joe Morgan sent up a pitch hitter for Wade Boggs.

Tribe Manager Doc Edwards was asked if he could envision any situation in which he would send up a pinch hitter for his best hitter, Julio Franco. "The only situation I could conceive of even considering it, and that's not saying I'd do it," Edwards said, "Was if we had the bases loaded in the ninth inning, I needed a grand slam home run to win the game, and I had an outstanding left-handed hitting home run hitter on the bench, and a side-armed right-hander on the mound." ONE MORE TIME? A year ago at this time Indians third base coach Johnny Goryl was hinting at retirement. The grind of the long season, the age is the sixth highest of the 26 major league teams. The Dodgers had the winninest minor league percentage at .581. The lowest winning percentage, surprisingly, are the Boston Red Sox farm clubs at .396.

NOTES: The Indians and Blue Jays conclude their season series today at 1:35 p.m. with Rich Yett (8-6, 4.88) facing Jim Clancy (10-13, 4.36). The Tribe then hosts Detroit for a three-game series starting Monday night. The Indians' Instructional League team lost to the Reds 11-6 Friday. David Harwell was the losing pitcher.

Joey Belle and Alex Ferran had three hits. The Indians this year have 33 wins against AL East teams. That's their most against the East since 1982 (38-40). Willie Upshaw, who had his troubles defensively in the first half of the season, has not committed an error since August 11. The Indians entered last night's game nine games under .500 (72-81), matching their worst record of the season.

Leader by three OGAWA, Japan (AP) Japan's Toru Nakamura shot a 3-under-par 69 Saturday and opened a three-shot lead in the $485,000 Jun Classic golf tournament. Nakamura carded six birdies on the Jun Classic Country Club's course for an 11-under-par 205. Tribe notes arrival of a new son, and the discouragment of the Tribe's 101 losses all had Goryl leaning towards retirement. He decided to return, however, and says now that retirement is not on his mind. "I'll do whatever they want me to do next year," Goryl said.

"If they want me to come back, I'll come back. Hank (Peters) is great to work for, and I enjoy being with Doc. We've got a great group of players, too. This team is 75 percent better now than it was a year ago at this time." PACKING 'EM IN: The Indians this season have set a franchise record for attendance on the road. The Tribe drew 2,006,337 in 80 road dates this year.

That broke the team's old mark of 1,762,564 set in their World Series year of 1948. OFF BROADWAY: The Indians' six minor league teams this year combined for a winning percentage of .534 (369-322). That includes Kinston, N.C. (88-52), which won the Carolina League championship, and Burlington, N.C. (37-33), which was beaten by King-sport for the Appalachian League title.

Stieb against Milwaukee, a 9-0 victory last May 31. Stieb continued his comeback from shoulder miseries which plagued him in 1986 when he went 7-12. He rebounded for a 13-9 season in 1987 and is 15-8 this year with seven complete games and three shutouts. Going into the game, Stieb had a 3.33 earned run average.

The Blue Jays scored the only run they needed in the ninth off Rob Nichols, 1-6. Fred McGriff led off the Blue Jay ninth with a line drive single to center and took second on Ranee Mulli-niks' sacrifice bunt. McGriff moved to third when Rick Leach lined a single to left field. McGriff was held at third by third base coach John McLaren, who had earlier waved home two Blue Jay runners who were thrown out at the plate. Rob Ducey then hit a sacrifice fly to medium center field to score McGriff easily with the game's only run.

Nichols, a rookie right hander, yielded nine hits in his third complete game. CLEVELAND (AP) Dave Stieb, one out away from the first no-hitter in the 12-year history of the Toronto Blue Jays, lost it on a bad-hop single by Julio Franco in the ninth and finished with a 1-0, one-hit victory over the Cleveland Indians Saturday night. It was the seventh no-hitter broken up in the ninth inning this season in the major leagues. Only minutes before Stieb completed his no-hitter, Montreal's Pascual Perez pitched a rain-shortened 1-0 no-hitter against the Phillies at Philadelphia. Just nine days ago, Cincinnati's Tom Browning pitched a perfect game in a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Stieb allowed only three base runners, two on walks and one hit batsman, before giving up Franco's spoiling hit up the middle with two out in the ninth. Franco had fouled off several pitches on a 2-2 count before his routine grounder hopped over second base into center. The Blue Jays entered the American League in 1977 and had seven previous one-hitters, including one by i.l M.ini I in MICHELIN UiVIUI XA4 P3 HOOD LIBERATOR II Iwm Tim A Good Deal on a Great Tire EXPLORER 400 A Good Deal on Great Tin VOYAGER 1000 Whltewall Whitehall Whitehall 80R13 P155 80R13 P155 P165 P175 P185 80R13 80R13 80R13 P19575R14 P20575R14 P20515RI5 P22575RI5 P23575R15 1957011 13 PI8570M4 P20570RI4 40.95 47.95 58.93 66.93 70.95 72.95 73.93 7S.95 S2.95 45.93 37.93 61.93 76.93 Yankees rally to beat Red Sox P1I580RI3 PI7580R13 P18580R13 P19575RU P20575RU P20575R15 P21575R15 P22575RI5 P23575RI5 P17570RI3 P18570RU P19570RU P21570R15 WMewall P16580R13 P17580R13 P18575R14 P19575R14 P205 75R14 P23575R15 .28.95 .32.95 .34.95 .36.95 .37.95 .39.95 40.95 .41.95 .42.95 .44.95 .46.95 .48.95 58.95 61.95 63.95 69.95 72.95 52.95 54.95 59.95 64.95 67.95 31.95 35.95 37.95 39.95 41.95 43.95 46.95 47.95 48.95 50.95 52.95 54.95 31.95 33.95 35.95 37.95 39.95 41.95 44.95 45.95 46.95 49.95 51.95 53.95 P165- 80H13 P175'80R13 P185 BOR'3 Ft85- 75R14 P195 75R 1d P2C5 75R14 P215 75R14 P205 75R15 P2I5 75R15 P22575R15 P235 75R'5 75R14 75R14 75R14 75R14 75R15 75R15 75R15 75R15 P185 P195 P205 P215 P205 P215 P225 P235 P21570R15 P22570R15 Baseball 7 HOOD tXElID i.V.liil AGoorJ Deal on a Great Tire CHARGER 70 Raised White Letters P175 70SR13 the Chicago Cubs a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. 40.95 19570SR14 .42.95 NEW YORK (AP) Boston shortstop Jody Reed misplayed Willie Randolph's bases-loaded grounder with two outs in the ninth inning as the New York Yankees rallied for two runs and beat the Red Sox 5-4 Saturday to close within 4Vi games of the American League East leaders. The Yankees, who fell behind 4-3 in the top of the ninth when Jim Rice got an RBI grounder while pinch hitting for major-league batting leader Wade Boggs, came back against relief ace Lee Smith. New York's victory kept Boston's magic number for clinching at five, and came a day after the Red Sox rallied for three runs in the ninth to stiin the Yankees, 10-9. Smith, who had saves in his previous nine opportunities, walked Rickey Henderson to start the ninth. Henderson then stole his 87th base, and continued to third on Smith's wild pitch.

Claudell Washington followed with a double that tied the score. Don Mattingly was intentionally walked, and Dave Winfield's long fly out moved the runners to second and third. After Jack Clark was intentionally walked and pinch hitter Ken Phelps struck out, Randolph hit a routine grounder to Reed, but the ball skipped off his glove for his 10th error of the season as Washington scored. Smith fell to 4-5 and Lee Guetterman, 1-1, got the victory. Five Yankees pitchers held Boston to just four hits.

Expos 1 Phillies 0 PHILADELPHIA (AP) Pascual Perez pitched a rain-shortened no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday night as the Montreal Expos won 1-0 in five innings. David Palmer, also of the Expos, pitched the last rain-shortened no-hitter, beating St. Louis 4-0 in a five-inning perfect game on April 21, 1984. Reds 2 Braves 1 ATLANTA (AP) Danny Jackson pitched a a four-hitter and became the first Cincinnati pitcher to win 23 games since 1963 as the Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1 Saturday, their sixth straight victory. Royals 6 White Sox 2 CHICAGO (AP) Danny Tarta-bull, Frank White and Brad Wellman had run-scoring singles during a four-run fourth inning Saturday as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox, 6-2.
