News Journal, Mansfield, O. Tuesday, November 24, 1987 2-a Newsmakers RegionOhio People Ohio favorite son Bruce Willis weds actress Applegate in race for Dem nomination 1 JA i i- LOS ANGELES (AP) -Actor Bruce Willis and actress Demi Moore were married in a private ceremony in Las Vegas, last weekend, says a spokesman for Willis. No other details about the ceremony or guests were disclosed. The couple will live in Willis' Malibu beach home, said spokesman Paul Bloch. Willis, 32, is shooting the movie "Diehard" in MOORE WILLIS The 18th district takes in 11 counties.

It includes steel-making centers in eastern Ohio and runs south to the Ohio River through coal-mining territory. "The message is we've been ignored long enough," Applegate aide Jim Hart said of the nation's older industrial region. "We cannot afford to let these kinds of areas continue to decline in economic well-being." Hart said that by capturing all of the district's Democratic delegates, Applegate could take six votes with him to the convention. There are currently about 4,160 delegates. James Ruvolo, chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, said it has been difficult for favorite-son candidacies to succeed no matter how popular the candidate is.

"People want to vote for president," said Ruvolo. Applegate, who has served in the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate, was elected to Congress in 1976, succeeding Wayne Hays. He is a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Works committees. Applegate was unopposed in running for re-election last year. WASHINGTON (AP) Rep.

Douglas Applegate says he hopes to bring the concerns of the Ohio Valley before the Democratic Party at next summer's convention as a presidential favorite-son candidate. The Ohio Democrat said he had been thinking about such a candidacy since the last presidential election and decided to run two or three weeks ago. "I want to go to the Atlanta convention with some votes in my pockets, and I want to wheel and deal," said Applegate. Applegate, 59, said he wants to see how the other candidates address the issues of coal, steel, economic growth in the Ohio Valley and U.S. trade before throwing his support behind one of them.

Favorite-son candidates generally run for president because they want issues benefiting a certain region or state to be included in a party's platform or to be supported by a stronger candidate. "I don't have any great illusions of being sworn in as president of the United States," said Applegate. "I am going to represent the district." Applegate said he has been told by the Ohio secretary of state that he can legally run for re-election to Congress even though he is also running as a favorite-son candidate. Applegate said his presidential campaign will not be national in scope, although he hinted that it might extend beyond the 18th congressional district that he represents. Actor contributes $5,000 to help burned-out church NEW YORK (AP) "Cosby Show" actor Malcolm Jamal-Warner, who plays the adopted son of a Roman Catholic priest in a made-for-TV movie, has donated $5,000 to the building fund for the priest's church.

Jamal-Warner made the surprise presentation to the Rev. George Clements on Monday, as the two answered questions from religious leaders about the NBC movie "The Father Clements Story," to be broadcast next month. The movie is a dramatization of the real-life story of Clements, who is portrayed by Louis Gossett Jr. A 1986 fire destroyed Clements' church in Chicago. Jamal-Warner donated his fee for a cameo appearance on NBC's "Matlock" to the rebuilding project.

Sign thief draws eight days WASHINGTON, Ind. (AP) A stolen $23 street sign honoring ex-national security adviser John M. Poindexter has brought an eight-day jail sentence for the man who argued the theft was protected under his right to free speech. "I'm very pleased, very pleased," said William T. Breeden, who could have been sentenced to a year in prison and fined $5,000.

"Given the parameters of justice that we have, I think it was a fair trial." Breeden, a 38-year-old part-time janitor, also was ordered Monday to perform 80 hours of community service. He admitted taking the sign in nearby Odon last Thanksgiving, two days after Poindexter, a native of the town of 1,400 people, resigned amid disclosures in the Iran-Contra affair. Breeden said he was holding the sign for a $30 million ransom to protest U.S. support for the Nicaraguan rebels and Poindexter's role in the affair. He had claimed his action was protected by his constitutional right to free speech.

Gizzard collector Letterman guest MARLIN, Texas (AP) A woman who for almost 30 years has collected turkey gizzards and the odd things that come out of them will get to talk about her bizarre hobby on the "Late Night With David Letter-man" show. Ruth Stone's unusual hobby got her a round-trip ticket Monday to New York to appear on the comedian's offbeat variety-talk show tonight. Mrs. Stone used to clean and inspect gizzards the bird's second, food-grinding stomach and found dozens of curious objects in them, including crucifixes, coins, springs and glass, as well as shiny rocks. "I even got a spark plug," Mrs.

Stone said. "And things like rocks and marbles. Oh, and I got one dice out of it." Mrs. Stone said her appearance on the NBC-TV show will be the first time she has seen it the whole way through. "I've seen parts of it before, but I always seem to fall asleep before it's over," she said.

Miss Moore, 24, starred in the movies "St. Elmo's Fire" and "About Last NigW Larry Gatlin against horse racing BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) Country music singer Larry Gatlin is lending his name and talents to a rally for opponents of race track gambling.

Gatlin, who lives in this Nashville suburb, is to declare his opposition to pari-mutuel betting at tonight's rally, the organization Williamson Countians Against Gambling said in a news release. Williamson County voters will decide Dec. 8 whether to approve pari-mutuel wagering in the county. Gatlin, and his brothers Steve and Rudy, are known for hits such as "All the Gold in California" and "Broken Lady." Voters in neighboring Rutherford and Davidson counties have voted against the proposal this year. Kenny Rogers returns to Vegas LAS VEGAS, Nev.

(AP) It was a homecoming for entertainer Kenny Rogers, who returned to the flashy casino where he once booked talent. Rogers is a headliner at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino these days, but reminisced Sunday about when he played the Glitter Gulch casino's bar, the Gold Strike Lounge, and helped book entertainment there in the mid-1970s. "I was making $11,000 a week in those days," he said. "But I was doing 21 shows a week, working six nights a week. And I had to pay all my own expenses, pay my band, everything." And today? "I make that much a song now," he said with a grin.

"The trick is to sing a lot of songs." Entertainers Diana Ross, Jack Jones, Tommy Smothers and comedian Yakov Smirnoff joined the crowd. We watch with wonder, Lord, as you gently turn a dark sky into a new light, and we bring you thanks for another day and all of its opportunities from you. Amen. Protest leader resigns from pastors' group FiEE DAYTON, Ohio (AP) The Rev. Charles Scott has resigned as head of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) almost two months after leading a demonstration by about 500 people at City Hall to protest what they felt was improper treatment of the city's police chief.

Scott resigned Monday, citing differences with some ministers he said were influenced too much by local were angry because Scott allegedly was negotiating with business leaders about the fate of police Chief Tyree Broomfield. The station said the other ministers alleged Scott was negotiating so that Broomfield would step down and be replaced by Lt. Col James Newby, who is white. Newby's replacement also would be a white officer. Broomfield is the city's first black any choices on any type of scenario concerning the future of the chief," Scott said.

He also said he could not support any plan that would have whites in the department's top two positions. The City Hall demonstration, which resulted in the reinstatement of two police majors whom Broomfield had hand-picked in January 1986, touched off actions which tion in the city. Black leaders have said they are upset because the Police Department is about 10-percent black while the city's population is about 40-percent black. Last week, Mayor Richard Clay Dixon said the city would welcome a friendly lawsuit from community groups to overturn restrictive civil-service rules related to hiring and (NO SERVICE CHARGES) WITH ONLY A politicians. police chief promotion.
