Home arts display spectacular By HELEN BATES What a revelation to see the accomplishments of 4-H Clubs in Kern County! While browsing through the 4H home furnishings, canning and clothing exhibits at the 1974 "International Aire in Kern Fair" we found lovely antique furniture beautifully reflnished. complete wardrobes sewn by the girls themselves and row upon row of canned fruits any adult would be proud to have on her pantry shelf at home. There were handcrafts of all kinds, with sewing projects, candles, bottles made into clever animals, plaques, pictures and lamps, bulletin boards with waste basket combinations, games and just about anything to do with homcmaking Highlighting the borne furnishing department is a beautifully refinished old Hoover kitchen cabinet, done by Jennifer Briggs of Rosedale 4-H Club, which shows hours of painstaking work to complete. Several layers of old paint had to be removed and the cabinet refinished in a beautiful satin baodrubbed finish. Jess to say this was a blue ribbon winner.

Another old fashioned group a chair, a deacon's bench and candle table redone in black and gold, accented with a hand hooked rug, was done by Laura Combs of Rosedale Club. Loyce Toblcr, also of Rosedale Club, refinished an antique "potbelly" stove in black and gold, making it into an attractive planter. In the canned foods display are jar after jar of delicious looking jellies, fruit, vegetables, pickles, relishes and. believe it or not. pickled quail eggs! A dried food section shows beef jerky and fruit- leather, the latter sort of a fruit candy.

In frozen foods arc meats, vegetables, fruits and fresh frozen strawberry jam all neatly wrapped and labeled. There were three divisions in the clothing section. There were many blue ribbon winners in all groups. The judging was done by the Danish system, meaning each entry was judged on its own merit and ribbons awarded accordingly. Outstanding in beginners was an outfit made by Annette Byrd of Sunset 4- Christine Johnson of Creenficld 4-H entered five in the intermediate class, winning five first place ribbons for her outstanding sewing She is a sophomore at Arvin High and a very talented young lady.

Pamela Watkins of Shatter 4-H was winner in the advanced with her "old fashioned" style beige long dress with lace bodice and rullfe at the bottom, accented with a big floppy hat in the same lace and materials Another entry deserving of mention is a chess board made by Linda Thurston, Sunset 4-H. Fashioned out of nuts and bolts, the men are very distinctive in their black and white paint. A very clever game! There is a game table made from an old treadle machine, wind chimes made from knives and forks, pictures made of stitchery even terrariums. Viewers can find any kind of craft to stimulate the imagination in the 4-H exhibit. Our youths are the homemakers of tomorrow.lt is well they are learning the arts of homemaking.
