Thursday, November 28, 1 985 Newt Journal, Mansfield, 0. Sports 3-e Digest Dickey happy to join Browns By Jeff Schudel Newt Journal cormpondf nl "I think I can still run with the best of them." Curtis Dickey BEREA, Ohio Indianapolis might not be behind the Iron Curtain, but Curtis Dickey feels like a free man today after getting an exit visa from the Colts. The Cleveland Browns picked up the one-time flashy running back on waivers Tuesday, hoping he still has some flash and dash in his 29-year-old legs. He practiced with the Browns for the first time yesterday. "I'm here to help the Browns win," Dickey said.

"I didn't have the opportunity with the Colts. "I think I can still run with the best of them. I'll play wide receiver if they want me to. My preference is running back." Dickey's lament is a familiar one of players cast off by one team, hoping to regain youth with another. John Jefferson said some thing similar in late September after being dumped by Green Bay, then about two months later the Browns discovered the Packers were right.

Dickey had off-season surgery on Name the new league MANSFIELD Area sports fans are invited to name the the new high school athletic league which includes Madison, Mansfield Senior, Malabar, Ashland, Lexington and Marion Harding. Inrterested persons should send their suggestions to the athletic director of any of the six schools in the league. Please include your name, address and phone number.

Hubbard resigns TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) After 12 years of coaching the Florida Rattlers, Rudy Hubbard announced his resignation Wednesday as head football coach. Hubbard, who had been asked to step down, had no firm plans for the future and said he was still negotiating with the university as to how long he would remain employed there. But the 39-year-old former starting tailback at Ohio State said he would not accept a job offer as assistant athletic director at the Tallahassee university. Memphis State fires Dempsey MEMPHIS, Tenn.

(AP) Head football Coach Rey Dempsey has been relieved of his duties at Memphis State University, Athletic Director Charles Cavagnaro said Wednesday. Dempsey, 49, came to Memphis State in 1983 to replace Rex Dockery who was killed in an airplane crash. Bellard axed STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) Mississippi State football Coach Emory Bellard, who had predicted his team would capture the Southeastern Conference title this season but failed to win a conference game, was fired Wednesday. Bellard, 57, had been at State seven seasons.

He had one year to go on his contract. State finished 5-6 overall and 0-6 in the SEC this past season, and his overall mark at the school was 37-45. The Bulldogs closed their season Saturday with a 45-27 to archrival Mississippi. Athletic Director Charley Scott made the announcement at a news conference, saying that Bellard was relieved of all duties Tyger boosters meet MANSFIELD The Tyger Booster Club will meet Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Mansfield Senior High School cafeteria at 7 p.m.

The boosters will meet the first and third Wednesday of every month. I Lee, Shelton practice RICHFIELD, Ohio (AP) Rookie forward Keith Lee and veteran forward Lonnie Shelton both worked out with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday for the first time in weeks, the National Basketball Association team said. Lee, a product of Memphis State, has not yet played in a regular-season game because of a thigh injury. He aggravated the injury two weeks ago and had not practiced between then and Wednesday. He will need another two weeks before he is ready to play in a game, said Cavaliers' spokesman Bob Price.

Shelton, who also has not played this season, practiced Wednesday for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Oct. 1. He should be ready to play in a game in about a week, Price said. Veteran forward Phil Hubbard missed Wednesday's workout with a twisted right ankle but may be able to play Saturday against the New York Nets, Price said. Guard World B.

Free, meanwhile, practiced Wednesday after missing three games with a pulled hamstring. Florida extends Hall's contract GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) The University of Florida on Wednesday added two years to the contract of Coach Galen Hall, who has guided the Gators to a 16-1-1 record since taking over a football program rocked by a recruiting scandal. The extension takes Hall, who had a four-year contract, through the 1990 season. "After discussions with (UF) President Marshall Criser we agreed that such an extension offer to Coach Hall serves as a statement of our confidence in him, and of appreciation for the exceptional job he and his staff have done," Athletic Director Bill Can- said.

"The record speaks for itself. We do not believe any coach in college football has done a finer job these past two seasons." Hall, former assistant coach at Oklahoma University and an assistant to Florida Coach Charley Pell, took over when Pell resigned last season during an NCAA investigation of recruiting violations. The probe resulted in three years of probation for the Gators. The Gators are 8-1-1 this season and ranked sixth in the nation heading into Saturday's home game, their finale, against cross-state rival Florida State. Dowhower claimed Dickey was a selfish player and that he didn't put out in practice.

In football, being branded as selfish is worse for a player than it was for a woman to be branded a witch in colonial times. Naturally, Dickey says the charges were untrue. "I don't think I'm selfish, even though he says so," Dickey said. "I practiced like everybody else. I carry the ball like everyone else." Dickey hasn't carried much at all this year.

Since returning from his knee operation he's had nine carries for 34 yards and three catches for 30 yards. If nothing else, he should be fresh at a time when most players are beginning to drag from the non-stop pounding that began in training camp back in July. "I have no preconceived ideas about his past or what he can do here," Schottenheimer said. "We feel his acquisition will help the team." Defensive end James White was waived to make room for him. White spent the first 11 games on injured reserve.

He was waived last Thursday for the purpose of activating him. Browns officials held their collective breaths, hoping he wouldn't be claimed, then five days later cut him. itttfML CLOSED THANKSGIVING DAY UnOr-l I THURSDAY 11-28-85 DOORBUSTERS INDASH AIM 120 WATT STEREO 7-BAND CASSETTE EQUALIZER $19.00 300 WATT 6x9" 3-WAY SPEAKER KIT 6x9" FULL RANGE SPEAKER KIT Sherwood YOUR CHOICE YOUR CHOICE DIGITAL, AUTO-REVERSE Indash AM-FM Stereo Cassette DIGITAL INDASH AM FM-STEREO CASSETTE YOUR CHOICE SHERWOOD AUTO REVERSE i DOLBY BASSTREBLE ANRC CRAIG INDASH AMFMMPX DOLBY NOISE REDUCTION SEPARATE BASS TREBLE MINI CHASSIS, 12 WATTS CASSETTE, CONVERTIBLE NOSE i CAR MASKS PROTECT TOUR MR AGAINST NICKS 1 SCRATCHES HI-POWER AUTO-REVERSE WBUILTIN 5-BAND EQ Indat AM-FM Stereo Cassette 79.88 PROspec PUSHBUTTON TUNE Auto-Reverse, BassTreble Music Select System (MSS) SSs $39.88 WITH FAST FORWARD Compare $179.95 59.88 his left knee then another operation on his right knee in September. The latter operation kept him out of the first six games. a Dickey was a first-round draft choice of the Colts in 1980.

He blazed out of Texas with 4.3 speed, i Time and the knee operations have slowed him to 4.5, even though he says rehabilitation after surgery as made him "stronger than ever." i Speed is what the Browns offense lacks, so that's why they went after Dickey. One player who's delighted is tight end Ozzie Newsome. Since being drafted in 1978 New- some's longed for somebody to con- sistently take the heat off him. Jefferson did it for awhile, until the Browns made the mistake of throw- ing to him. When defenses learned Jefferson can no longer catch they relaxed their coverage and went back to double-teaming Ozzie.

"Curtis Dickey is always a threat," Coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "If you make one mistake against him, he's gone. Each time we pre-. pared for him it was scary. He's like (Browns receiver) Clarence Weath-, ers.

One play and it could be 'See you Dickey's carried 800 times for 3,490 yards. He's had runs of 51, 67, 56 and 30 yards. He's caught 124 passes for 1,499 yards. He's had receptions of 32, 50, 34, 72 and 33 yards. Dickey might line up as a decoy against the Giants, but it's unlikely he'll do much more than that.

Kevin Mack practiced lightly yesterday, which dispels any doubts about his ability to play Sunday. Mack suffered bruised ribs in last week's game against the Bengals and is listed as probable for the Giants game. The Browns other injured player, quarterback Gary Danielson, did not practice because his shoulder was too sore. He might try today. Practice is scheduled from so players i can be home with their families for Thanksgiving dinner.

Neither Dickey nor Schottenheimer wanted to talk about how the 6-foot-l, 220-pound back fell out of favor with Colts Coach Rod owhower. In Dickey's defense, he's not the only one. Earlier the Colts gave up on former Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter and wide receiver Ray Butler. Webber acquired CINCINNATI (AP) The Cincinnati Stammers announced Wednesday they acquired Continental Basketball Association rights to rookie forward Clifton Webber from the CBA's Maine Windjammers. The Slammers said ihey expected to immediately sign Webber, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward who averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds per game last season as a senior at Liberty Baptist College in Lynchburg, Va.

The Slammers said they released Joe Concheck, a rookie from Ohio State, on Tuesday to make room for Webber on the 15-player roster. CBA teams had to trim their rosters to 15 players by Tuesday. Curtis resigns LEWISBURG, Pa. (AP) Bob Curtis, head football coach at Buck-nell University for the past 11 years, has resigned. Curtis, whose 1985 team went 3-7, said he didn't have definite plans for the future.

Curtis, 50, came to Bucknell from Franklin Marshall, where his teams had a 32-3 record. He took over a Bucknell football program that had only one winning season in the previous nine and produced three consecutive .500 or better seasons. His 1980 team, which went 6-4, was sparked by running back Ken Jenkins, now with the Washington Redskins. Overall, Curtis coached Bucknell football teams to 48 wins, 56 losses and three ties.
