Creating a nostalgic, romantic Founded by the Dubuque American Legion Post in 1963, the Colts enters its 26th year of existence this season. In 1966, the original corps, the Legionnaires, began competing and added girls as members.

Ten years later the corps changed its name to the Colts. Seventy-five percent of the Colts are Iowa high school and college students. The corps has additional members from six other states, Kngland and Belgium. The average age of a member in the Colts is 18. The corps appears in Open Class mood, the '88 program opens with the ballad Old Times.

The program then blows wide open with high velocity and impact as the corps presents Mountain Greenery, an energetic production about city folks visiting the country for a weekend, according to officials. An old jazz dance standard from the show business era of New York jazz, Just in Time follows. An entertaining contra-keyboard feature presents "tuba jazz" in four-part harmony. The program then segues into Spyro Gyra's '80s jazz tune Mardi Gras before closing with one of the most recognizable ballads of the Big Band era, My Funny Valentine. corps officials said.

A bit of Olympic flair has been added to this year's U.S. Open as Allegiance, a unique marching brass ensemble from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, will be one of the units in Class A competition. The unit was the only drum corps to officially participate in the recently completed Calgary Winter Games.

Under the direction of Gerry Hemsley and drum major Debbie Wheeler, the 1 1 -year-old unit placed second last year in the DCI Midwest Class A Championships, only its second competition. In its first competition ever, at last year's U.S. Open, the group narrowly missed making the Class A finals. STAR new as corps but veteran as band The STAR Drum Corps of Revere. is in its second year as a drum corps.

But it boasts a history of 25 years as a band. The corps will compete in Class A during this week's U.S. Open at the stadium of Harding High School. The corps has 20 boys and 20 girls In its membership, with the average age 16. It is sponsored by St.

Anthony's of Padua Church. Its repertoire this year includes Mackelraner. Time of Your Life and One More Time. The STAR in 1987 was named Class Eastern Massachusetts champi- yew i ftftc niiT the nnnm In order to present the organization and, in keeping with its goal to be unique and a leader in the activity, the corps adopted the designation of "a marching brass ensemble," officials said. This was done to help the general public relate to what the corps is and accurately portray its distinctly identifiable classical image.

Its uniforms were designed to emphasize the marching aspect of the program by utilizing a brilliant gold pant, which was certainly different from anything previously witnessed in the drum corps arena, officials said. The marked and radical departure from the standard dark black, blue or green or basic white pants by its predecessors has virtually become a trademark already. This year's Allegiance staff describes their show as one of "aggressive finesse with some wrinkles thrown in." The expanded membership once again will provide an all-classical repertoire with an arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov's Legend of the Invisible City, foolowed by the mysterious and beautifully haunting melodies of Glazunov's The Kremlin. Dvorak's New World Symphony ill then unfold, including a percussion feature laced' with visual delights. The show will conclude with the majestic and powerful Coronation of Boris Goudonov, by Moussorgsky.
