The running game was hurt in the second half as Matt Paulus played just briefly in the half after suffering a hip pointer in the second quarter. The Irish added 53 yards through the air on 5 of 13 but Devine suffered the two interceptions. Crestline added 90 yards on the ground to its 160 yards passing for 250 yards in total offense. Finnegan was the 'Dogs top rusher with 73 yards in 10 carries.

Crestline had four penalties for 55 yards and lost its only fumble of the game while Irish, who were hit with 14 penalties last week, cut it down to seven which cost them 70 yards. They recovered their only fumble in the contest. The visitors averaged 40 yards on four punts and the Irish had a 21.5 average on a like number of boots. Marion Catholic goes on the road for the first time this season Friday with a visit to Cardington while Crestline entertains Highland Friday. Starting from its own 37, Catholic got a first down at the Irish 47 on a run by Kevin Devine and then followed with a another first down on a pass from Devine that bounced off John Wiseman's hands into the arms of John Ducharme for an 11-yard gain to the Crestline 42. On the next play, Jones broke over right tackle and blasted his way for a touchdown but the Irish's first penalty of the game proved to be costly as it nullified Jones' electrifying run and four plays later Vicencio punted to the Crestline 13. As it would turn out that would be Marion Catholic last scoring threat as it never penetrated past the Crestline 42 for the rest of the game.

It was another four-play drive for Crestline that gave it the lead it would never relinquish. A Zara pass fell incomplete on the first play but his second one was good for 13 yards and first down to Bryan Wiley. Finnegan was stopped for no gain and then the Bulldogs brought back a play that had worked in the opening series of the game. Rolling to his right, Zara found Stull open on a drag pattern and thanks to teammate's excellent block that turned him loose, Stull completed a 74-yard touchdown pass-and-run play. Zara threw a two-point conversion to Wiley to make it 14-6 with 5 07 left in the half.

There was no further scoring in the half but it did not take long for the 'Dogs to put points on the board at the start of the second half. (Star Photo by Bill Neiderhouser By BOB PUTMAN Sports Writer Striking with lightning-like sud denness, the Crestline Bulldogs scored four touchdowns of more than 20 yards in length to defeat Marion Catholic 30-6 and spoil the insns homecoming, presided over by Queen Leslie Loreno, at Harding Stadium Saturday night. It was the opening Mid Ohio con ference game for both teams.

The Bulldogs took a little more than a minute to score on their opening possession and followed with another score midway through the, second quarter on a long pass. But it was the suit of the second' half that put the game away for Crestline as it scored twice in the Irish coach Rick Schuler said alter the game that if you can be happy after a 30-6 loss, he was. He said "we moved the ball on a good defense," and added his players could have easily given up after getting down early the second halt mit "tney didn't cave in." Schuler said he knew going into the game that the Irish were going to be vulnerable to the pass but still felt they needed to take gambles if they were going to win. Crestline quarterback Mike Zara proved Schuler right as the 5-11, junior signal-caller went 8 of 17 pass-ing for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Zara also threw for three two-point conversions.

Marion Catholic, which had trou ble last week generating any kind of offense against Delphos St. John, earned a first down on the opening series of the game as Rich Jones blasted for 15 yards to the Irish 46. But that was far as Catholic got and a short punt gave the ball to Crestline on its own 43. It took Crestline just four plays to put the first points on the board. After two runs gained eight yards, Zara connected with tight end Bill Stull on a drag pattern for 22 yards and a first down at the Irish 27.

On the next play, Tom Finnegan was able to turn the corner and raced up the left sideline for a touchdown. Finnegan's extra-point kick sailed wide and the Bulldogs led 6-0 with just under four minutes gone in the first quarter. Neither team threatened until late in the first stanza wnen marion Catholic scored its first touchdown of the season. Breaking through to block a Fin negan punt, Jones put the finishing touches on the play by picking up the ball on the 20 and going in for the score. Didi Vicencio's kick on the extra point suffered the same fate as Finnegan and it was 6-6 with 33 seconds left in the first quarter.

On Marion Catholic's first possession of the second quarter, the Irish started a march that looked like it. might end with a go-ahead touchdown. McCray's interception of Guidry's pass came at the LSU 36.

Three plays netted only six yards and the Buckeyes lined up for a 47 -yard field goal attempt. Instead, holder Scott Powell threw a pass to fullback George Cooper who made a one-handed catch and turned it into an 11-yard gain to the 19. Six plays later, Tupa froze the LSU defenders with a fake running play and lobbed a touchdown pass to Koch, all alone at the rear of the end zone. LSU began its game-tying drive from its 30 after Ronnie Haliburton's five-yard return of a short kickoff. After Harvey Williams gained one yard, Hodson threw 10 consecutive passes, completing seven for 50 yards, including key third-down tosses of seven yards to Williams and 12 and 17 to Wendell Davis, who led the Tigers with seven receptions for 82 yards.

However, on third-and-nine at the 19, Hodson fumbled the snap from center, running back Victor Jones recovered for a four-yard loss and the Tigers had to settle for Browndyke's game-tying field goal. On LSU's next possession, the Tigers marched from their 47 to the Ohio State 8, with Hodson passing 13 yards to Magee and Jones gaining 16 around right end for a first down at thell. After Williams ran for three yards, Rogan stepped in front of Davis at the 2 and picked off Hodson's pass, returning it to the 35. With 53 seconds left, Tupa, the nation's leading punter, boomed a 56-yarder out of bounds at the LSU 2. Hodson passed 15 yards to Magee and threw an incomplete pass before Rogan made his second interception and returned it six yards to the Tigers' 39 with 27 seconds to play.

(AP) -LSU's David Browndyke kicked a 40-yard field goal with 6:25 remaining Saturday and the fourth-ranked but error-prone Tigers salvaged a 13-13 tie with No. 7 Ohio State after frittering away a 10-3 halftime lead on turnovers. LSU lost a fumble and threw three interceptions in the second half. Ohio State turned the first two into a 38-yard field goal by Matt Frantz late in the third period and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Tom Tupa to Jay Koch early final quarter for a 13-10 lead.

Ohio State cornerback Greg Rogan intercepted LSU's Tom Hodson twice in the final 2V- minutes. The first came at his 2-yard line and the second at the Tigers' 45. However, LSU defensive end Karl Dunbar tipped a 47-yard field goal attempt by Frantz as time ran out. It was the first meeting of these traditional college football powers and the first tie in the 16-year head coaching career of Ohio State's Earle Bruce, giving him a record of 123-56-1. The Buckeyes are 2-0-1 this season, LSU 3-0-1.

Ohio State pulled within 10-6 on Frantz's 38-yard field goal with 2:31 left in the third period, five plays after Hodson fumbled the football while dropping back to pass. Tackle Ray Holliman recovered at the LSU 40. The Buckeyes took their only lead at 3:53 of the fourth period on Tupa's third-down pass to Koch, 10 plays after linebacker Mike McCray intercepted a pass by Mickey Guidry, who replaces Hodson on the first series of the second and fourth periods in each LSU game. The Tigers opened their halftime lead on Hodson's 24-yard pass to Rogie Magee and Browndyke's 20-yard field goal after Frantz kicked a 27-yarder for Ohio State. The final period kept the 79,263 spectators, fourth-largest crowd in Tiger Stadium history, in a constant state of excitement as the Tigers, lost a lead, rallied to tie, lost a chance to take the lead on an in 22-6.

Zara went four of five in the drive, including a 26-yarder to a wide-open Todd Rox in the left side of the end zone for the touchdown. Zara and Stull hooked up for the extra point and it was 22-6 with 9:18 left in the quarter. Marion Catholic's first turnover of the game proved costly on the Irish's first try at the ball in the second half. Quarterback Devine tried to connect on a quick slant to one of his receivers but Eric Gekler was able to get inside position for the interception and raced 32 yards for the touchdown. Zara hit his third conversion pass, this time to Kevin Garrett, to make 30-6 with 7:41 left in the thirdquarter.

That was more than enough to enable Crestline to earn its third win of the season, although Marion Catholic was able to move the ball somewhat against the Bulldogs getting to around the midfield stripe on two occassions. But an interception by Dan McMichael stopped one drive late in the third quarter and the Irish were forced to turn the ball over on downs on their opening series of the fourth quarter. Second, Ouick; Third, C.Williams. in bottom CLEVELAND (AP) Brett Butler scored the winning run when third baseman Jack Howell bobbled Brook Jacoby's two-out bouncer, giving the Cleveland Indians a 10-inning 11-10 victory over the California Angels Saturday. Butler began the inning with a single off reliever Gary Lucas, 1-5, and moved to second on Junior Noboa's sacrifice bunt. After Joe Carter was intentionally walked, Lucas struck out pinch-hitter Carmen Castillo before a wild pitch moved the runners up a base. Jacoby then grounded to third, the ball hitting off Howell's chest.

Butler raced home with the winning run as Howell made a late, desperation' throw to first. Reggie Ritter, 1-1, picked up his first major league victory with 1 2-3 innings of hitless relief. Dave Clark paced the Indians' early attack with a two-run single and a three-run homer. Brian Downing had two solo homers for California, giving him 28 for the season, matching his personal high set in 1982. Downing also singled and doubled in his five at-bats.

The double was his 220th as an Angel, giving him the team record previously held by Jim Fregi. Cleveland took a 10-8 lead in the eighth when Butler hit a two-run homer, his ninth, and Carter added a run-scoring single. The Angels knotted the game in the ninth when pinch-hitter George Hendrick had an RBI single and the tying run scored on center fielder Butler's error. Angels second baseman Johnny Ray was taken to a hospital for precautionary X-rays of his jaw after leaving the game in the fifth inning. Ray doubled, giving him at least 30 doubles in six consecutive seasons, but left fielder Carter's throw to second hit the sliding Ray in the jaw on the first bounce.

Cincinnati's loss reduced San Francisco's magic number for clinching the National League West tc two games. The Giants were scheduled to play a night game in Atlanta. Danny Darwin, 9-10, allowed five hits in 7 1-3 innings to help the Astros snapped a streak of four consecutive losses and seven straight on the road. Larry Andersen finished the game for his fifth save.

The game was delayed several minutes in the fourth inning, when Darwin threw an inside pitch to Dave Parker and the 6-foot-5 outfielder charged the mound. Parker threw a punch at Darwin as the benches emptied, and Parker was ejected from the game. Reds starter Ron Robinson was ejected a half-inning later by home plate umpire John Kibler when his first pitch sailed behind Darwin, the lead-off batter. Both teams came onto the field again, but no blows were exchanged. Darwin yielded Jeff Treadway's second homer in the first inning, Buddy Bell's RBI single in the fourth, and Bell's 16th homer in the sixth.

The Astros scored five unearned runs with two outs in the fourth off Robinson, 7-5. Craig Reynolds reached on first baseman Nick Esasky's fielding error, stole second, and scored on a single by Kevin Bass. Another stolen base and Denny Walling 's single made it 2-1. Glenn Davis singled before Puhl hit his first homer in 86 at-bats this season and his first since Oct. 1 of last year.

GATOR'S NEW DATE JACKSONVILLE, Fl. (AP) The Gator Bowl football game is moving to New Year's Eve. The big game, which is carried on CBS television, will be played the afternoon of Dec. 31. In past years the game has been carried on a date close to Christmas.

Cager killed BOISE, Idaho (AP) Jeff Foster, a 6-10 junior center on the Boise State University basketball team, was killed in an early morning traffic accident at Jordan Valley, school officials said Friday. Foster, 20, was traveling to his home at Salinas, when his car collided with a truck at Jordan Valley, about 160 miles from Boise, said Sports Information Director Max Corbet.

A passenger in the car was not seriously injured. Corbet said the Jordan Valley Police Department said the accident occurred shortly after midnight..
