Variety The Sunday Star Sunday, January 3, 1993 Page 5C Low-key role may open new doors for Gibson yiwuM. mm McCormick volunteers for the assignment. "I just want to sleep for a year," McCormick says. "I can't stand to watch Helen die." So the deal is made. McCormick will sleep for a year but, should a miracle occur and Helen recovers during that time instead of dying, Finley will revive McCormick.

That's the plan anyway. Oh well, the best laid Instead of waking a year later, McCormick is revived 53 years later and not by trained scientists but by two small boys who think his cryo-tube is a submarine. It seems that for one reason or another, Finley'sexperiment had been abandoned over the years and McCormick' frozen body put in a warehouse. When he awakens in 1992, McCormick must deal with the loss of his way of life and find a way to fit into this new world. He must also find a way to locate Finley so that he can find out what went wrong.

While it might appear, at first glance, that Forever Young is simply a film about being displaced in time, it is really much more. It is a story about having faith, about not giving up easily and about acceptance. McCormick gave up too easily, as he finds out. And the pain he hoped to avoid comes back tenfold when he's revived. Not to worry though, Forever Young delivers a happy, if somewhat bittersweet, ending.

And it's not the one you would first expect. Not only does Forever Young have a touching, well-paced, tightly knit story, takes light look at television Between the Covers Dan Moloney some home films of Tahiti to a brainstorming session to expand Williams' Streetcar Named Desire into a situation comedy that spawned the seeds for Hill Street Blues. The outer limits of this insanity came from the man who gave the world Gilligan's Island who wished to do a TV movie matching the original with the horror of the nuclear disaster The Day After, even the author was almost speechless at this. Tartikoff claims he would like to put on more culture but points out the night he programmed a musical with Meryl Streep followed by a program with the great tenor Placido Domingo and it drew a rating of 3, the lowest in the history of network television. The point Tartikoff There is a shirt making the rounds that has a picture of a TV and writing on it that says something to the effect of, theatre is art, movies are culture, television is furniture." It is easy to knock the medium, most of the material on it is junk, but it is still the form of entertainment for most.

Brandon Tartikoff appreciates the differences, the other forms require people lining up and paying money. To have an economically viable program these days 15 to 20 million viewers are required each week, a lot of seats to fill. Insiders books on television traditionally do poorly but that might change a bit with The Last Great Ride. In it the author recounts his 12 years at the helm of NBC programming, this was the period that witnessed the network moving from last place to first and giving the man legendary status. What makes the book entertaining is that it has as little depth as many of the programs but a lot of the entertainment.

Former Diffrent Strokes star Todd Bridges, who preached abstinence from drugs after run-ins with the law, has been arrested again.

The 27-year-old was booked Tuesday for investigation of transport and possession of drugs while armed and being under the influence. Police suspected Bridges was involved in drug trafficking and obtained serach warrant, finding Wi grams of methamphetamine, or "speed," and a 9mm pistol in his 1988 Mercedes, Sgt. Don Goldberg said. Bridges was acquitted in 1989 of attempted murder in the shooting of a drug dealer at a crack house. The actor, who acknowledged having once been a heavy cocaine user, appeared at schools and on television to urge young people to stay away from drugs.

it also contains fine performances by Gibson and Jamie LceCurtis, who plays Claire, the mother of one of the hoys who finds McCormick. With Forever Young, Gibson gets a chance to show that he can deliver more than a good head-butt. He can deliver a touching, well-acted portrayal of a man struggling to accept what's happened. He also shows that he doesn't need the overblown special effects of his previous films, just a strong supporting cast, tight storyline and his own acting abilities. by Ken Auletta's hefty Three Blind Mice, it is even mentioned here.

An unstated theme is how many of the peers in this business started out as mere fans from their youth with no experience at all, this may be the most telling comment, the ultimate temporary business run by temporary employees.

If you enjoyed any regular television in the 1980's there is little doubt Brandon Tartikoff was a source of some of it. In The Last Great Ride he hardly tells all but gives enough of interest to provide some light laughs, if limited insight, for a potentially heavy new year.
