The result, as television newsman Howard K. Smith pointed out earlier in the evening, was that a national political convention was going pourer for a much peak of in the the country, wee and thereby undoubtedly get a minimal audience. Today, after all, is a working day for most people, and one can be reasonably certain that many viewers who might have wanted to watch nevertheless tuned out when the late finale of the proceedings became inevitable.

After some other party matters, nominations for vice president finally began when prime time was almost over in the eastern part of the nation. What with the various people running and the nominatins speeches for them, balloting for this half of the party ticket did not get started until about 12:30 a.m. EDT today. Smith's broadcasting partner, Harry Reasoner, observed that not only were the Democrats losing a chance to present their presidential candidate to the nation at a better hour, but also would be on the late side for editions of some influential eastern and midwestern newspapers. Televiewers could see that even some of the delegates at the convention seemed impatient with the drawn out proceedings.

For, in short, though important issues may well have been involved during these hours, people at home undoubtedly were waiting for the big moments such as Sen. George McGovern's acceptance speech as the party standardbearer, but instead had to sit through a long stage, wait. This matter late-in-thenight proceedings has been video therefore, in a sense, a political problemlever since the convention began because the Democrats simply got started too late each evening.
