FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1952 THE REGISTER-NE\A/S ~ MT VFRNON, FLLINOIS Sues Because His Pants Caught Fire In Crowded Bus By Aiioeiatid Pr«>s CHICAGO—Allen Schmitt, 45, is asking $25,000 damages from iltf' the Chicago Transit Authority for hurn sand humiliation he suffered when his pants caught fire on a bus Aug. 12. In a suit filed Thursday in Superior Court, Schmitt said the CTA was negligent in not providing him with enough room in the bus to remove his pants in a hurry. Because he couldn't get them down in a hurry, he said, he suffered burns which forced him to spend several weeks in hospitals. Moreover, he charged, the bus was crammed with people—mostly women. When the cry of "Fire" was sounded, and smoke started coming from his trou.iers, curious women crowded around him and impeded his movements. He alleged overcrowding of the bus. FIRST MARINE DIVISION, Korea. — President Syngman Rhee today presented the Republic of Korea's highest military decoration, the order of military merit to Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd, commandant of the U. S. Marine Corps. By AstDclnted Press WASHINGTON. — President Truman says neither he nor anybody else, to his knowledge, ordered Gen. Dvvight Eisenhower to take command of railway strikers about to be darfted into the Army in 1946. The President's statement, at his news conference Thursday, thus disputed an assertion by the General — which mentioned no names—that such an order was given. Truman's statement was in answer to a question prompted by an article in the New York Times. The story quoted associate's of the Republican presidential nominee as saying Eisenhower, in a talk with Truman, threatened to quit as Army chief of staff in May, 1946, rather than be a "strikebreaker." The Times recalled that the strike began May 23 and ended May 25. It quoted Eisf-nhower associates as saying that, between these dates, Eisenhower had two telephone conversations with Truman—one from the .office of then Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson. Asked about this, President Truman told his news conference that no such conversation took place. He said he knew the chief of staff would never tell the Commander ONLY $14,000 buys one of Mt. Aide Whispers to Truman After an aide whispered to him, Truman added that somebody else might have held such a conversation, but not that he knew of. He said it all came out of free air and was a political situation entirely. Eisenhower, in a speech before the American Federation of Labor convention at New York Wednesday, said he was resting in Georgia in the spring of 1946 when he got a telephone call from Washington. He mentioned no names but said the caller sought his immediate return to Washington to assume command of the strikers, about to be drafted as a means of ending a railway walkout. Eisenhower said he refused at first but, when pressed, agreed to meet with the strikers as a soldier, "and not a strike-breaker." Ike Summoned by Patterson Newspaper files show Eisenhower was called to Washington May 24 by Patterson. The strike was settled May 25 while President Truman was reading a message to Congress demanding "drastic" legislation. Eisenhower himself had no immediate comment on Truman's statement, but Gov.
