FRIDAY, MAY 13, 2011 THE LEAF -CHRONICLE DIT DEXTER DOES 'Found footage' flicks amp up the scary factor "Found footage" films have become some of my favorite and more terrifying selections to watch. The "Paranormal Activity" films, "Blair Witch Project," and countless others have made films scarier by putting you in the point of view of the person experiencing the terror that regular films just can't duplicate. I was super excited last week when the film "Megan is Missing" made its way to various rental venues I had read a few things about it being one of the most disturbing "found footage" films out there. This film follows teen friends Amy and Megan Amy is the more shy type while Megan, obviously having a rather troubling past, enjoys meeting boys, going to parties and. getting messed up.

The entire film is shown through cell phone and webcam footage, a nod to how connected we all are these days, and it follows these two through crazy parties where drinking and drug use is rampant, and also shows video chats between the to, Megan revealing her tumultuous past to her shy best friend. After seeing what the two girls get into, you can't help but know that something horrendous is about to happen to them. Then you see Megan getting to know a supposed young man, "Josh," online. He sends her a picture and says and does all the right things, and before you know it, she's off to meet him. That's when she disappears, and Amy sets out to find out what really hap- Jamie Dexter DEXTER DOES pened to her only real friend, and is documenting her investigation.

Faux news footage follows Megan's disappearance, along with several other girls in the town, and you're left to wonder what awful things are happening to her. Through her investigation, Amy also gets to know Josh, and she notices something terribly unsettling about him. As the film slowly winds its way to the terrifying conclusion, the sense of looming terror builds and builds. Some blame Amy for Megan's disappearance, but you can truly tell poor Amy is lost without her best and only friend. You feel terrible for her, and terrible for Megan, who is hard to like because of all the disgusting things she gets herself into.

Once the conclusion is reached, I found heart beating out of my chest. It's not long before Amy disappears, and when police find Amy's camera in the garbage near where she disappeared, they find footage of what happened to the two girls. To say it's disturbing is an understatement. While this isn't a movie for kids, I would say this film would serve as an incredibly PSA for not meeting people off the Internet. It took days for me to shake the horrible feeling this movie left in me, but that just means it was effective in what it set out to do show this very real and plausible scenario of how internet predators work.

If you've got the stomach and the nerve to see it, it's definitely worth it. It's not a film I'll soon forget, and I'm sure you won't either. Jamie Dexter is glad he didn't see this film in his teenage years, as he might have never gone back on the Internet.
