MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 1966 2 STATESVILLE RECORD LANDMARK Negro Man Charged In Assault On Driver Record Landmark Bureau MOORESVILLE-A 23-year-old Negro man from Pennsylvania, Bobby Lee Young, was still in jail here this morning in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon charge involving a Mooresville taxicab driver. Police arrested Young on Saturday. In a warrant signed by policeman, Young is accused of striking George Brannon on back of the head with a Sunrise grape drink bottle. The alleged assault, according to police records, occurred about 8:25 p.m. Saturday, August 6, after Brannon, a self-employed taxi operator, took a passenger to Ashe Alley.

Brannon received a bruise and a laceration, but was not injured seriously. Reportedly, there was no attempt at robbery. According to police information, the passenger, before striking, told Brannon: "I'm sorry to do this, old buddy." Arrested Sunday in connection with the case of thievery at the Charles Mack general wholesale firm in which five employes were earlier with lar. ceny, 23-year-old Robert charged, Wayne Wilson, Negro, of Mooresville, another employe. He is charged with larceny of 30 cartons of cigarettes, valued at $54.60, on March 2.

Arrested Sunday also was Hugh Hayes Johnson, 30, Negro, of 221 Rice Street, Kannapolis. He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. In the warrant signed by John Edward Sanders, he is accused of cutting Sanders on Saturday with a pocket knife from ear to chin. The wound required 43 stitches, it was noted. A $300 bond was posted for Johnson's appearance in Mooresville Recorder's Court on September 12.

Also booked by police Sunday was Oscar Benard Snow, 37, of 468 Patterson Avenue. He is charged with striking Betty Lou Snow, on the arm with a metal ash tray. She signed the warrant and is from the same address. Charged Saturday with violating the town ordinance against public display of beer by drinking beer from a can on South Main Street was Cecil Hurley Cobb, 39, of 1504 North Brevard Street, Charlotte. A $50 bond was posted for his appearance in court on September 12.

Other names on the blotter at the police department today included: Robert Thomas Richardson, 31, of 1517 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, Hesten Lee Groce, 43, of Winston-Salem, and Charlie Odell Sloop, 45, of route 4. Mooresville, all charged with speeding: Eugene Jimmy Davis, 20, of 917 Central Avenue, failing to observe a stop sign; and Billy George Vinson, 34, of 113 Gray Street, who was charged by a state highway patrolman with driving without an operator's license and with driving on wrong side of the road. Death Claims R. L. Hanks Robert L.

Ranks, 89, route 5, Statesville, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the home of his son, Arthur Hanks. He was a retired merchant and school teacher. Born October 2, 1876 in Wilkes County, he was a charter member of the Cherry Lane Baptist Church of Glade Valley and a Mason. His wife the late Louella Richardson Hanks, died March 29, 1960.

Surviving are two sons, Ar. thur Hanks, route 5, Statesville, and Earn Hanks of Mocksville: two daughters, Mrs. Ima Smith and Mrs. Faye Blevins, both of Glade Valley; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and four great great granchildren. Officials of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Sparta announced that funeral services for Mr.

Hanks will be held at Cherry Lane Baptist Church in Glade Valley at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Rev. Everett Shaw officiate assisted by Elders Charlie Miles and Howard Royall, Burial will follow in the church cemetery. FINAL SHOWING USED HOUSEHOLD FURNISHINGS.

R. Sloan 419 Sullivan Road Death Claims John Steele John Franklin Steele, 70, of Turnersburg, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at his home.

Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Steele was born July 22, 1896, in Statesville, son of the late Thomas Leroy and Sara Frances Linker Steele. He was graduated from Mulberry Street School and was vice president of the Mulberry Alumni Association at the time of his death. He was a U.

S. Government electrical supervisor and served 29 years in the Norfolk area prior to his retirement July 1 18, 1958. He was married on December 14, 1920, to the former Muriel Hendren, who survives. Also surviving are two brochers, Thomas L. Steele of Norfolk, and William C.

Steele of Charlotte: four sisters Mrs. H. A. Scott of Kannapolis, Mrs. Nelle Steele Rhodes of Charlotte, Mrs.

Sara S. Turner of Charleston. W. and Mrs. Martha S.

Morgan of Statesville. Mr. Steele was an active member in the Masonic Temples and in Hebron Baptist Church. He was a member of Statesville Lodge 27, Royal Arch Masons of Virginia, Knights Templar and Grand Commandery of Norfolk, Acacia Club of Norfolk, Khedive Temple in Norfolk and the Oasis Temple in Charlotte. He was also a veteran of World War I.

Funeral services for Mr. Steele will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hebron Baptist Church, Rev. S. D.

Baker, pastor, officiating. He will be assisted by Rev. D. T. Huss.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery The body will remain at Nicholson Funeral Home and will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at the residence in Turnersburg. Honorary pallbearers will be Masons of this area, members of the Statesville Shrine Club and members of the Men's Bible Class of Hebron Baptist Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the John F. Steele Memorial Fund at Hebron Church.

Funeral Held For O. T. Sims Funeral services for Oscar Thomas Sims, 72, route 2, Stony Point, were conducted Sunday at the Stony Point Baptist Church. Rev. John Scalf and Rev.

Henry Cook were in charge of the services and burial followed in the Stony Point Cemetery. Mr. Sims died at 10:20 a.m. Saturday at the Alexander County Hospital. He had been in declining health for two years and seriously ill for eight months.

He was veteran of World War I and was a gun and locksmith. He was born in Faulkner, on October 29, 1893, a son of the late Richard and Ella Patrick Sims. He is survived by his wife, Ola Terrell Sims; one daughter, Mrs. Carlton Crouch of Stony Point; three brothers, Arthur Sims of Pittsburg, William A. Sims of Conway, and Archie Sims of Stockton, two sisters, Miss Mary Sims of Conway, and Mrs.

Police reports filed by Sgt. Billy Watts show Thomas Eugene Brooks, 23, 1028 Wilmington Avenue, was operating the Honda on West Front Street.

and when he braked for a traffic signal at the intersection with Oakland Avenue, the bike skidded out of control, Brooks and a passenger on the Honda, Nancy Carol Brooks, 312 North Mulberry Street, were both taken to Davis Hospital where Brooks was admitted as a patient but his wife was treated and released. No charges filed, and damages to the Honda were estimated at $75 in the 8:33 p.m. mishap. Two persons received slight injuries in a one-car accident which occurred at 5:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Fayetteville Avenue and Boule- Woman Hurt In Collision Four cars were involved in two separate automobile accidents Sunday night at the intersection of U.

S. 21 and the Old Mountain Road, three miles north of Troutman, and five persons were injured. The series of events began at 9:15 p.m. when a 1965 Mercury driven by Bobby Gene Lazenby, 21, Negro, 1135 Park Drive Extension, rammed the rear of a 1957 Ford station wagon driven by Herman Bost Nash, 54, route 3, Statesville. Nash had stopped on the roadway, Highway Patrolman C.

E. Gaither reported, to allow a southbound vehicle to pass in order to make a left turn onto Old Mountain Road, when the car was struck by the Mercury. Lazenby, and a passenger in the Ford, Mrs. Herman Nash, were both taken to Davis Hospital, where Mrs. Nash was reportedly paralyzed in her arms and legs.

It was not immediately known whether the paralysis was temporary or permanent. Lazenby was treated and released. Three passengers In the Merury, Tony Lee Lazenby, 18, Johnny Craig Parsons, 18, and Steve Wayne Smith, 17, all of Park Drive Extension, were treated and released at Iredell Memorial Hospital. John Franklin Warren, 18, route 1, Statesville, and two passengers in the 1955 Chevrolet which he was operating were eyewitnesses to the accident. They reported that Lazenby had just passed their car in Troutman during a heavy downpour of rain, and they saw the electrical turn signals on the Nash car flashing as the Lazenby vehicle plowed into the stopped car.

The Ford was damaged an estimated $300, Trooper Gaither reported, and the Mercury was damaged an estimated $700. Lazenby was charged with reckless driving. The second accident occurred. at 9:45 p.m., as Warren, who had volunteered information, was driving around the two wrecked car and his car collided with a 1958 Buick driven by Glenard Uray H. Bomer, 126 Garfield Street, who was entering U.

S. 21, from the Old Mountain Road. Total damages in the mishap, investigated by Highway Patrolman R. D. Cranford, were estimated at $175.

Arlo Holland Weisner, 32, of Mocksville, was admitted to Iredell Memorial Hospital Saturday night after the car he was driving clipped a utility pole on the Hunting Creek Road, seven miles west of Statesville. Reports filed by Patrolman Cranford show Weisner entered a curve to the right, lost control of the vehicle and clipped off a utility pole on the right side of the road. Damages in the 7:25 p.m. accident were estimated at $500 to the 1963 Ford and $150 to the pole which was knocked down. vard.

Police reports show Ronald Michael Henderson. 16, 1014 Eighth Street. was operating a 1961 Ford which skidded out of control on Fayetteville Avenue and struck a tree. Henderson and a passenger, Blaine Adams, 15, 1200 Ninth Street, both received slight injuries but were not treated at a local hospital. Reports show Henderson had made a turn from Boulevard onto Fayetteville Avenue, and the car skidded 120 feet, mostly on the wrong side of the road.

A 1952 Plymouth driven by Leon Preston Brewer, 30, 421 Buffalo Street, was damaged an estimated $50 and a parked car struck by the Plymouth was damaged an estimated $500 in another mishap. According to reports, Brewer was operating the Plymouth west on Front Street at 1:20 p.m. Saturday when the vehicle struck a parked 1965 Pontiac owned by Ruby Hoover Elliott, 2021 Newton Drive.

Brewer told the investigating officer he was forced to the right side of the road by a car which pulled into his path of travel. Brewer was charged with driving too fast for conditions. Total damages were estimated at $325 in an accident which occurred at 7:20 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Fourth Street and Raleigh Avenue. Reports show Glenn Newton Sharpe, 68, 1225 Fifth Street, was operating a 1958 Chevrolet north on Fourth Street and collided with a 1955 Chevrolet truck driven west on Raleigh Avenue by Otis Fred Frye, 73, 1651 Forest Drive.

Harold Eugene Feimster, 19. Negro, route 4, Statesville, told police Saturday night that he was distracted by a car passing at a high rate of speed, and his car ran off the road on the right side and struck ditch. Police reports show Felmster was operating a 1966 Chevrolet east on Interstate 40, near intersection with highway 115, at 7:10 p.m. when the mishap occurred. Total damages were estimated at $150.

Only slight damages were reported in a two-vehicle accident which occurred at 11:53 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of West End Avenue and North Meeting Street. Reports show Commie Bottoms, 62, route 1, Cycle, was operating a 1952 Internation which collided with a 1964 Volkswagen driven by Terry Barr Ashe, 19, 640 Dogwood Road. Bottoms was attempting to turn from North Meeting to West End Avenue when the mishap occurred, reports show. Total damages were estimated at $175.

Theft Of Tools Is Investigated E. R. Mooneyham reported to members of the Iredell County Sheriff's Department Saturday that a number of tools have been stolen from a new house under construction on East Broad Street near the new bridge. Among the items missing are an electric drill, a hammer, a hand saw, propane torch, metal snips, pliers, tongs and other items, total value estimated at $94.15. Officers are continuing their investigation, Argument Leads To Man's Death HUDSON (UPI) Lonnie Benge, of rural Caldwell County reportedly shot and killed a 39- year old neighbor Saturday and then turned a pistol on himself, inflicting a serious wound.

Caldwell County sheriff's officers said Benge was taken to a Winston-Salem hospital and was reported: in serious condition today. Dead was Thomas Andrews Spears. Summers Death Victim The body of Dock Jake Summers, 58, route 2, Statesville, was found in bed in his oneroom house Sunday morning, the apparent victim of a heart attack.

Iredell County Sheriff Charlie Rumple reported today that Ruby Summers went to the home of Murrell Dayvault to summon authorities, after her husband was found lying on his back in bed. Investigating officers found no evidence of foul play, it was reported. A son, Steve Lloyd Summers, told officers and acting county coroner Dr. R. L.

Dame, that his father complained of chest pains Saturday afternoon but refused to see a physician. Dr. Dame ruled death was due to a heart attack. Mr. Summers, who was born July 1908, was a son of the late Charlie and Mary Jordan Summers.

He was a member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church and was employed by the Farmers Cooperative Exchange for 20 years. Surviving in addition to his wife, Mrs. Ruby Lee Cooke, are two daughters, Mrs. Betty S. Shumaker, and Mrs.

Rosie Lytton of Statesville: two sons, Steve Summers of the home, and Spec. Charlie Summers of Viet Nam; two brothers, Nathan and Mack Summers of Statesville: and one sister, Mrs. Nonie Low. tharte of Statesville. Funeral plans are incomplete and are pending the arrival of the son from Viet Nam.

The body is at Reavis Funeral Home. Arrests Made By City Police A number of persons were arrested during the weekend by members of the Statesville Police Department for traffic violations, el reports released today by Chief J. D. Myers show. Those charged include: Peggy Howard Summers, Negro, 1200 Goldsboro Avenue, left turn at Square; Albert Nash White, 17, 309 Oakland A Avenue, running red light; William Taylor Sullivan, 24, of Greensboro, driving drunk; Moody Marion Brooks, 50, of Kannapolis, speeding; and Larry Jennings Stock 27, of Kannapolis, driving after license expired.

Also arrested during the weekend were: Daniel Grover Lee Rucker, 17, 1115 Willow Street, assault with a deadly weapon on Vance Henry, 560 East Sharpe Street; Will William David Nixon, 22, Negro, 532 Cloverdale Drive, disorderly conduct; Jimmy Joe Stovall, 35, Negro, 1423 Huggins Street, disorderly conduct; and Marcel Campbell, 46, Negro, 514 Railroad Avenue, larceny. City Merchants Slate Meeting Downtown merchants will hold a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the ballroom at the Vance Motor Hotel, according to Garret Allen, chairman of the downtown merchants committee. The purpose of the meeting 1 is to discuss the following items of business: a proposed downtown parking plan, formation of a downtown parking authority to operate independently of the city, to approve a token system implement paid parking and to consider a new approach to downtown advertising. Allen urges all merchants to attend the meeting, and he says that changes are already underway that will affect downtown shopping.

ATTENDS FUNERAL ATTENDS FUNERAL Vernon Hanson, 425 Lakeside Drive left Saturday for Brookings, S. to attend the funeral of his mother, Mrs. E. A. Hanson who died Friday.

He was married on April 20, 1934, to Beulah Mae Benfield, who died December 28, 1957. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Grady Drum, route 6. Statesville, and Mrs. Lawrenc Rochester, route 3, Statesville; one sister, Mrs.

Lee Hoover of Statesville. Four grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were to be conducted by Rev. F. R.

Loftin, Rev. Dean Simpson and Rev. Ray Benfield. Burial was to follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were to be John Vance Byers, H.

S. Benfield, Bill Benfield, Coleman Cascadden, Bruce Peacock and Boyce Fox. Bunch Funeral Home was in were kept a closely guarded secret, but they were reported to completely disregard the administration's 3.2 per cent wage guidelines. The contract was reported to contain a cost-of-living escalator, opposed by the administration, wage increases in excess of 56 cents an hour over three-year period, and fringe increases in excess of those contained in an aborted agreement reached at the White House July 29. Reynolds, chief federal mediator throughout the strike, said both sides have "reached agreement on terms of memorandum of an understanding." He said arrangements would be made as soon as possible for an "orderly presentation of the terms." After announcing the settlement, Reynolds said "I want stress that it is an agreement reached by he parties themselves."
