Corn: This was our bidding at rubber bridge. How do you rate our bids and bow do we get to three no trump? group on the fringes of mainstream rock. I say fringes because Johansen music has a quality lacking in so many groups today. His gut level, two-fisted approach demands that you sit up and take notice. It all started last year with "Funky But Chic" off the first solo album.

NOw with "In Style," he grabs you with "Melody" and "Swaheto Woman." His grinding voice is straight from the streets. His music is grass roots and that's what makes it so Infectious. At a recent Cleveland Agora appearance, Johansen held the crowd captive from song one and emotionally maneuvered them at will. His secret that will launch his success is the grass roots method. What a pleasant change from the boring repetition of groups the like of Fleetwood Mac and Foreigner.

Foreigner makes records by simply cloning themselves. SucH is the case with "Head Games," the group's third album. As far as I'm concerned, Foreigner still hasn't released a second LP. All their material sounds the same. Most of it stinks.

How do I spell boring? F-O-R-E-I-G-N-E-R. I'll give Lou Gramm and company credit for their first LP, simply entitled "Foreigner." It contained some catchy power rock like "Cold As Ice," "Long, Long Way From Home" and "Head Knocker." I was indeed looking forward to the maturing of this group. But it never happened, and now Foreigner is coming cldse to becoming trapped in a musical rut. If Foreigner continues on this self de-struct course, even the hard core Foreigner fans (who are probably throwing up as they read this) will eventually lose interest in the band. But "Head Games" doesn't even have a catchy tune that A.M.

radio can play to death. "Women" is just a list of "women who in combination with music that sounds like your baby brother Just took the needle of your stereo and scraped it across the record. Of course Foreigner crazies will dash out and scoop up a million copies of "Head Games" Just for the sake of having another Foreigner album. Even if the crazies cleared their heads momentarily, I think it would be obvious Foreigner really has done nothing since their debut LP. Unless the cloning stops, Foreigner is certain to follow in the footsteps of a faulterlng peer.

That of course being Aerosmlth. Ralph Kislel He was previously the lead singer of the Dolls which made two records for. the Mercury label in 1973 and 1974, and broke up the following year. The Dolls were punk rock, complete with outrageous, glitter costumes, but were simply before their time and remained popular in New York and nowhere else. The David Johansen group maintains the self-assurance and crude style that trademarked the Dolls.

But "In Style" and Johansen's first self-entitled LP takes away the punk image and puts the Worst Suit, Walnut Creek, Calif ANSWER: The bidding was poor by both sides. West shoud pass two spades and, although his three diamond bid was meant to steer partner to three no trump, it missed by quite a big margin because East failed to Interpret West's intentions.
