NAACP Loses Court Round In Mississippi JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - U.S. Dist. Judge Harold Cox has refused to force the state of Mississippi to charter the NAACP to do business within the state. Cox, in an opinion issued Thursday, also declined to grant immunity to non-violent civil rights demonstrators. The ruling came after the NAACP asked federal court to har Jackson police from arresting civil rights demonstrators. More than 1,000 were jailed last summer as the NAACP led street demonstrations against racial policies in this Deep South state. Cox called the demonstrations "mass disorders which invariably got put of hand and erupted into riots of unruly and defiant people under irresponsible leadership." Cox said he found no evidence to show that the NAACP had a vested right to a charter authorizing it to do business within Mississippi. The civil rights organization has operated freely without a charter. Earlier this week the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the state of Alabama to permit the NAACP to operate in that state. Methodists Ask Northerners To Stop Sit-ins JACKSON, Miss. (API-Methodists of the North Mississippi Conference have asked all churchmen — particularly those from out of the state — to refrain from kneel-in and sit-in demonstrations. Delegates to the annual session of the conference here unanimously approved a resolution Thursday night saying "the people of Mississippi have suffered from out of state demonstrators, boycotts and other forms of agitation." The resolution noted that many of those participating in such activities include ministers or representatives of the i Methodist Church or other Meth- I odist-affiliated organizations. i Two Methodist churches in | Jackson have been the targets I of kneel-in attempts for the last i year. i A number of persons, includ- jing out of state clergymen, have been arrested for refusing to leave church property. Two !of those rejected by one of the I churches included two Methodist bishops—one a Negro. "It is our considered opinion ; that such activities hinder the improvement of racial relations Jin Mississippi and that such | demonstrations are hurting the ! Methodist Church and other churches," the resolution said. '•We ask that our own people ! be patient and understanding in jthe face of racial turmoil," the i resolution continued, "and that i they attempt always to main- Itain and to heal good racial re- 'lationships." i Earlier conference delegates jhpnored Bishop and Mrs. Marvin Franklin. The bishop will retire from the active episcopacy later this summer. Eye Injury Results In Damage Suit A West Lake father, whosa minor son was injured when struck in the eye with a thrown firecracker January 1, has filed a $52,775 damage suit in 14tb Judicial District Court, naming an insurance company as defendant. According to the suit, Loris 0. Brewer Jr., filed the suit on behalf of his son, John R. Brewer 1021 Bee St., as a result of injuries which left his right eye with partial vision lost. The plaintiff claims that the boy was playing with children at the home of Felix Roya in West Lake when one of the children threw a firecracker which exploded and struck the son's right eye. Named as defendant was the State Farm Fire and Casualty Co., an insurer of the Brewer family.
