Connally, a Democrat and close ally of President Nixon, has fired a verbal barrage in what promises to be a continuing White House campaign assault on Sen. George McGovern.

the Democratic presidential nominee. resident Nixon has said he Doctor Savs Wallace Fit For Politics BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) The physician in charge of Gov. George C. Wallace's rehabilitation program says the Alabama governor would be physically able to wage a third-party presidential campaign should he decide to do so.

Dr. George Traugh, a specialist in physical medicine, said Friday that if Wallace entered the presidential race he would need rehabilitation unit it to travel with him." He said the circumstances would not be ideal "but it could be done." Wallace press, aide Elvin Stanton. however. discounted talk of a movement for Wallace. He said Wallace has made no definite political plans.

The Alabama governor flew from the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach, to Birmingham on Friday for four weeks of intensive physical therapy at the Spain Rehabilitation Center. where Traugh is on the staff. Wallace has been paralyzed since shot May 15 while campaigning in Maryland, Traugh said the governor won't leave the Spain Center until he is totally independent. He said it would be six months, to a year before it determined whether Walace will walk again. The first aim of the doctors will be to prevent infection; and the second, to make Wallace independent physically and occupationally.

The final, preliminary night again brought forth some excellent talent. It proved that the opening night talent rendition was no fluke in that a majority of the 26 girls in the pageant are not only beautiful but have an exceptional talent to go with their charms. Some of the contestants winning the audience approval Friday night Lynn Crist. Miss 'Northeastern Ohio who delivered an outstanding vocal performance: Rebecca Silliman, Valley whose comedy routine thrilled the crowd, and Amber Sims, Miss Miami Valley who was superb in an outstanding operatic selection. The final judging in the Miss Ohio pageant will be at the Sandusky High School auditorium.

Charges Fly Over Higher Welfare Roll COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) A state Welfare Department official asserted Friday that Gov. John Gilligan was not to blame for the increased number of Ohioans on welfare. Richard Lightner, the department's public affairs officer, responded to a charge by Republican state Rep. Robert Netzley, R-7 Laura, that Gilligan has made no progress in stemming the welfare rolls growth.

Netzley, a leader in the movement to repeal the Gilligan-supported state income tax, said there now are more than 465.000 persons on Aid to Dependent Children rolls, compared to 330.000 when Gilligan took office. Lightner said there are various reasons for the number of persons on ADC and the increased costs of the program, none of which involves the governor. "The U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare sets the standards for ADC and court decisions have recent, lot to increase welfare rolls." he said. "Also, welfare in Ohio is administered by the counties and not by the state." he noted, adding, "In Netzley's home county, Miami, there is a Republican county commission.

Then, Republicans in Miami County are responsible for the number of persons on welfare in Miami County, not the state." 7 East Side Alleys To Be Closed, Paved The Marion city engineer's office has announced that seven east side alleys will be closed to traffic Monday for paving operations. The alleys are: North south between Pennsylvania and Kenmore avenues from Church Street to Indiana Avenue. North between Grand and Seffner avenues and from Wilson Avenue to the north end of the alley. North south between Grand Avenue and Jefferson Street from Wilson Avenue to the north end of the alley. East west between Wilson Avenue and the Penn Central tracks from Jefferson to Seffner Avenue.

North-south between John Street and Dix Avenue from Wilson Street to the north end of the alley. East-west between Center Street and Church Street from Forest Lawn Boulevard to Reed Avenue. 15 Bicycle Club Members To Take Tour in Indiana A 75-mile "Three Rivers Tour" from Fort Wayne, to Hicksville, Ohio, and back is ir. the plans of 15 members of the touring section of the Marion Bicycle Club. Commemorating the first ride taken by Fort Wayne's bicycle club on July 10, 1884, the tour is sponsored by the Three Rivers Velo Sport Club of Fort Wayne. Weekend activities of the local bicycle include completing a 150-mile ride and a regular Sunday at 1 p.m. from Ludwig Park.

Last weekend, the group cycled 75 throughout the western portion of the county and worked on tour maps for an upcoming 150-mile bicycle tour of Marion County.
