the two most promising actors in the country and packed them off to Barter Theatre time alone could tell what the future held for them Time putting it mildly has given a monumental report The two had scarcely dusted off their luggage in Abingdon Virginia where the theater group Is located when they were whisked tnto a routine which would leave any normal human gasping A a Is common knowledge in that section of the country Barter Theatre was founded by Robert Porterfield in 1S2 A plaque on the front of the Barter Theatre incidentally says in part: Founded for the purpose of bringing together hungry actors and farmers with produce and a desire for culture and good acting" Ate Box Office' That was how the theater got its same Porterfield grins these days reminiscing and remarks: In those days these farmers around here brought in any kind of food and swapped it for a seat in the theater We the actors) ate the box office This year the theater has 75 members who are diversified enough in appearance to cast just about anyjplay These members are divided into four companies in which they are kept all the time If a member does not get a part in a current play then he is put to work painting scenery directing collecting props helping in the cafeteria at Barter Inn helping with publicity or various other tasks too numerous to mention Most prominent among these four companies is the Hamlet Company which is just finishing a three-weeks appearance in Elsinore Denmark where it presented "Hamlet the Shakespearean tragedy The company has included several Innovations As Porterfield puts it: The Danes were a little surprised when Hamlet drew a pistol and blew out Laertes brains with it especially when the play was supposed to have taken place in the days before firearms were invented But I guess they figured the Americans can be excused for anything Play One-Night Stands The group also has one company which is touring the road in Virginia Kentucky Tennessee and North Carolina doing one-night stands The other two companies take turns appearing in Abingdon's Barker Theater and in Luray Virginia where a new theatre was opened tins summer These two companies play five nights one town and then move te the other where they play five nighta once again They have their own busses trailers and sets and move everything with them Thia then was what Miss Larson and Bob walked into thia May Both of them however seem to have enough background and stamina to take it without too much ill results Mies Larson who is 22 years old a sparkling redhead and a native of Oak Park Illinois graduated from the University of Chicago last August She has long been associated stith the stage having taken countless parts in a little theater group in Chicago since she was 15 years old These were mostly childrens days but later she toured with the dare Tree Major company which was presenting Shakespearean days taking the parts of "Juliet ia "Romeo and Juliet and Bianca in The Taming Of The Shrew She also worked as a woman narrator in the Pageant of The Railroads in Chicago did some radio work in Chicago worked on tour with the Equity Library Theater Group as assistant stage manager and managed to acquire a Bachelor of Arts degree in the midst of all this No Favorite Role Mias Larson claims she has no favorite role although she has played more than a hundred major onea since she first started acting She does not yet know if the stage is her chosen career "Sometimes its the best thing in the world she says "and sometimes it leaves you wondering just what tomorrow will bring A good reason for Miss Larson's occasional spell of gloom could be the rigid schedule the players have Her company directed by Owen Phillips has to remember three plays at once While they were presenting "For Love Or Money" at night they were rehearsing "Show-Off and You Can't Take It With You Blackburn is a 24-year-old native of Jacksonville Fla Old Troupers Sympathetic It might have been embarrassing for some actors to be thrown in a troupe with such veterans as Herbert Nelson who has been with Barter eight years Laurence Hugo who has been there nine years and Tom McDermott who has been acting for the past 17 years But Blackburn says he found them sympathetic helpful and respectful for his experience which is hardly negligible Blackburn had throe years in the Army Air Corps Infantry ASTP and Special Service and spent a year overseas doinj musical comedies for the Army during which time he concentrator on the Army version of the civiliar show On The Town Previous to his service experience Blackburn had done Little Theate work in Jacksonville and was ii three major productions He staged "Angel Street at Alabama Polytechnic Institute where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in drama Blackburn also played in Oedipus the King did Brutus in Julius Caesar" and Nero in The Jest" He says the role of Nero was his favorite What Of Future? Those who see Blackburn and Mias Larson on the stage may wonder what the future holds for them The answer is obscure The Hamlet cast in Denmark Is a good example of the vicissitudes of acting as a profession Porterfield says members telephoned him from Berlin last week saying some of them will stay in Europe to study at the Sourbonne while others 1 -n'ed acting assignments in New York Only two of them will return to Abingdon ALL-STEEL BUILDINGS GO UP FAST from with STRAN-STEEL FRAMING Rapid eoettractiee!
