KINGSPORT T1MES-KEWS Sunday Not 4 1945 i PARIS ESME Servicemen Recently Discharged 59 Marriage Licenses Are Issued In Scott BVXCt INC I Sr HZ A I 'thin according to Morgan who understood Arabic As the ghastly engagement drew to its close I had a foreboding that something else unpleasant was about to happen Sure enough the bad tidings came in a letter from my brother who had gone to Paris alarmed by the news that mother was In my apartment very ill with influenza and had absolutely refused medical care This was most unusual for the had always beci Inclined to fly to a doctor at the slightest sign of ill health My brother's letter decided me to break my contract and return to Pari After much argument and bickering I finally came to an arrangement whereby the management would release me from the last week of my contract and I would waive the return passage Marseilles In compensation (Te Be Continued) Droom Aids Roscuo Of Allied Prisoners Lt Lawrence Droom 36 USNR 1500 Linville Street helped speed up the rescue of Allied prisoners of war from camps on Northern Honshu Japan while serving with Fighting Squadron 1 after the end of hostilities After playing an active part in the closing stages of the war members of the squadron flying from the carrier USS Bennington searched out prisoner-of-war camps and escorted torpedo planes on supply-dropping missions The Bennington put into Tokyo Bay in September for a stay of five days giving the squadron members a chance to visit the scene of their attacks on Yokosuka Yokohama and Tokyo 7U RU THE LAND OF THE XXVI Georges Baud appeared oiTe night with an Egyptian manager Gino Abouln in tow This resulted in an engagement for Cairo and Alexandria for six weeks It was not only a high salary but the source of much satisfaction to Morgan whose greatest desire had always been to get a look at what he called ruddy We left Marseilles for Egypt with quite an impressive list of actJ Sascha Goudin and his troupe of Russian dancers Mitty and Tillio acrobatic dancers from the Casino de Paris Pierrette Butterfly from the Champs-Elysees and a girl called Musette who said she was English but might have been any nationality or any age She dressed beautifully and had very well hennaed hair: her act consisted of playing the violin and doing an acrobatic dance Cairo was crowded with tourists of all nationalities but principally Americans who stayed at in town while the Gezireh and Mena Palaces some distance out were full of British officials with their families and members of the diplomatic corps In a way it was an extremely dull month and had it not been for company It would have been deadly for on nights in the early part of the week we danced for the tables most of the time and this after Paris was depressing I had received few letters from Leslie during recent months but knew he was stationed near Khartoum and thinking it might be possible for him to obtain a furlough and come by military plane to Cairo I cabled him about it I wanted to talk over many things and learn what he intended doing with his life for his letters were not communicative However he did not come and I received a letter from him before leaving Alexandria telling me his father was ill and he planned on going to London so would perhaps look me up in Paris But to come to Cairo while I was dancing at a hotel where most of his friends stayed would be a loux pas of the worst type for him and he begged me not to mention to any officials I might meet that I was his wife I concluded his career meant a great deal more to him than I did and forgot the matter If Cairo had been almost too comme 11 faut and dull Alexandria went to the other extreme Gino Abouln had nothing to do with the direction of the Pavilion Blue where I was to fulfill the second part of my contract so when he said goodby he was profuse in his thanks and praise of my conduct but omitted to tell me what sort of place to expect upon arriving in Alexandria Morgan had gone to the theater early on the day we opened to hang my rigging and when I arrived later for band call the expression on his face as he watched mine reflected acute anxiety for fear I would be too disgusted to work The establishment was a tawdry stuffy place with a tiny apology for a stage and half -moon floor space The orchestra appeared to be suspended In mid air in a sort of cage God knows how the musicians ever clambered into it or managed to play after they got there They were a mixture of Italian Greek and Syrian with a mania foq marches relying on the music of and and Stripes to fall back on In every emergency There were tiers of boxes around the floor where Arabs and Greeks played dominoes and drank small cup of Turkish coffee The only acts that had come on from Cairo were Pierrette Butterfly Musette and myself as the star act but at the rehearsal we met a dance team booked from London who were to fill out the bill with the assistance of a magician from Marseilles We were the distinguished imported acts for in the lobby there were the usual attractions Arab dancers who wiggled and jerked their stomachs to the wailings and thumpings of a native band and who were fat greasy and depressing The place was simply unbelievable and the dressing rooms defied description Preceding acts had scrawled their names in grease paint on the walls with obscene comments about the establishment and its directors in five different languages But the performance was the pay-off for the audience (which consisted mainly of natives with a sprinkling of French bourgeois and German tourists) were so absorbed in their eternal game of dominoes they barely gave us glance Even high soprano notes failed to get more than a casual applause and after they examined me from all angles on the rope they decided I was too Safety Beauty Economy ANJumum a errormanc Durability New 1946 FORD ($5000 Deposit With Order) If you want a new car place your order at once as we will fill all orders
