Peter Ustinov Accuses U.S. PARIS (AP) — British actor Peter Ustinov has accused the United States of exerting "eminently unattractive ... political pressure" on UNESCO by withholding budget contributions. HONOLULU (AP) Scientists fighting a critical battle against pests here are creating an unusual example of replacing pesticides with biological controls. "Hawaii is probably the most vulnerable spot on earth," says Dr. John Beardsley, a University of Hawaii entomologist. "But we probably have the best opportunity of achieving biological control." In the face of environmental concern about pesticides, scientists everywhere are increasingly interested in biological control — using . natural predators to fight crop pests. Entomologists have worked on such natural controls here for nearly 60 years. "We have spent more per capita in Hawaii looking for insects' natural enemies than any other state I know of," says Dr. Asher Ota, an entomologist for the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association. "We are very afraid." Afraid with good reason. Agriculture is Hawaii's third- ranking source of income, and sugar cane and pineapple & , Line,. AUCTIC;; represent more than 90 per cent of the half-billion-dollar- a-year agriculture industry. Hawaii's semitropical climate and the constant stream of planes and ships " from thousands of miles away allow as many as 20 new species of foreign insects to establish themselves here every year. Such species can flourish because they have left their natural enemies behind them. And if an insect stowing away on an incoming plane happens to have a taste for sugar or pineapple, Hawaii's economy is threatened. Hawaii has more entomologists "per square mile than any other place in the world" fighting immigrant pests, Beardsley says. Among them are exploratory entomologists who roam warmer parts of the world looking for insects that will kill pests in Hawaii. One entomologist returned from four months in Asia recently with 750 different insects to test. The hottest import at the moment is the statphylinid beetle, which is being groomed to take on the souring beetle, a pest that breeds in rotting pineapple stumps and has been linked to a fungus disease in sugar cane. If entomologists are satisfied that the statphylinid will attack the souring beetle without harming beneficial insects or otherwise upsetting the natural balance, it will be turned loose in the fields in large numbers. Hundreds of other insects from seven species have failed in previous UNWELCOME VISITOR-Robert Kunishi, an entomology identifier for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Honolulu, examines a sphinx moth—one of countless pests found in routine searches-that came to Hawaii aboard a military plane from the Western Pacific. Page 13 Garden City Telegram Thursday, July 1,1976 inspectors routinely check all arriving planes. The department also disposes of garbage arriving in Hawaii aboard planes and ships to prevent still more insects from getting a foothold. A final part of the biological attack is breeding varieties of crops that resist pests that might arrive in Hawaii. "We're one of the few institutions in the world doing preventive entomology," says Ota. "We've been worried for years about the so-called Fijo disease of sugar cane." The fungus disease, which is transmitted by an insect called the leaf hopper, exists in Fiji and Australia. Because leaf hoppers also exist in Hawaii, the disease could spread through cane fields here like wildfire, says Ota. laboratory tests. One of the entomologists' biggest recent victories was the downfall of the banana skipper, a caterpillar that eats leaves from banana trees. Pesticides that would have killed the beast were banned by federal regulations. But scientists quickly discovered an insect in Thailand that would devour the caterpillar, and within a year the banana industry was safe. The state and private industry spend about $300,000 a year in the search for insect predators and consider it a bargain. In the long run, Ota says, the constant use of insecticides would cost more than natural control. The prime example is the sugar industry — nearly 250,000 acres completely free of pesticides. As the tourist industry grows, bringing more and more jetliners, so grows the chance for unwanted insect stowaways. But U.S. Department of Agriculture Before one infected leaf hopper arrives in Honolulu International Airport, and starts looking for a mate, scientists hope to find varieties of cane that are less susceptible to the fungus. There is one bright spot in the scramble to stay ahead of the insects. Almost none of Hawaii's native insects has become a pest. Most of the state's crops are of foreign origin, and only foreign pests have developed a liking for them.
