(UPI)- The weather bureau said Saturday the first warning that a storm existed near Green wood Friday was issued only two minutes before a tornado smashed half the town to pieces and killed 12 persons. "It was one of those storms that began to build very rapidly," said James Huff, meteorologist in charge of the weather station at nearby Fort Smith. He said forecasters did everything they could.

Hundreds of other persons were injured when the twister sawed a 400-foot-wide path through the center of the Ozarks foothills town of 2,000. Some residents were still missing Saturday. Lt. Gov. Maurice Britt said he was asking disaster designation for Greenwood.
