Steve Stone, 3-3, squirmed out of jams In the sixth and seventh innings when the Indians had the tying run on third base with none out. But Stone got Bruce Bochte to foul out and Buddy Bell on an inning-ending double play. Lemongello, 1-4, struck out four and walked three and the red-hot Pirates didn't get a runner as far as third base until the ninth when Ken Forsch struck out Phil Garner with runners at the corners. Jerry Reuss, 0-4, taok the loss.

Enos Cabell started Houston's three-run fourth inning with a one-out single and stole second. Cesar Cedeno was hit by a pitch preceding an RBI single by Bob Watson. After Joe Ferguson fouled out. Cliff Johnson and Art Howe drilled run-scoring singles to wrap up the scoring. Lemongello, who compiled a 3-1 record in 29 innings with Houston last year, came within one out of his first complete game of the season as the Astros won for only the eighth time in their last 25 games.

K- 1 KANSAS CITY (AP) Dave Nelson singled Fred Patek home in the ninth inning as the Kansas City Royals, snapping a four-game losing streak, nipped the Texas Rangers 3-2 Friday night. Bert Blyleven, 4-3, who had beaten the Royals six straight times, gave up 11 hits. Mark Littell relieved Larry Gura in the eighth to notch his fourth victory against one loss.

John Wathan, one of three reserves inserted in the lineup by Royals' Manager Whitey Her-zog, popped to Bump Wills to lead off the ninth. But the rookie second baseman dropped the ball to set up the eventual winning run. Gura, who set the Rangers down in order in the first three innings, fell behind 2-1 in the fifth when Claudell Washington singled Jim Sundberg to second and Bert Campaneris brought him home with a single up the middle. The Royals came back an inning later with a run on a disputed play at the plate. Cookie Rojas doubled to left with two out, then raced home when John Wathan poked a single in front of center fielder Juan Beniquez, whose throw to the plate resulted in a close play.

Prior to that blast, Handle had provided the Mets with their first run by homering off Rick Rhoden, 5-1.

NEW YORK (AP) Jon Matlack tamed Los Angeles on seven hits and Dave Kingman hit a gigantic two-run homer as the New York Mets cooled the red-hot Dodgers with a 3-0 victory Friday night. Matlack, 2-3, a long-time Dodger-killer with a 12-5 lifetime mark, pitched out of jams in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings to become the first pitcher to blank the runaway Dodgers this season. They had previously scored by the seventh inning of every game. Matlack was supported by a fine defense that pulled off sev Braves Owner Can't Manage Kuhn Rejects Turner came home when catcher Milt May's pickoff throw hit him in the shoulder and rolled down the left-field line. May's third home run was balanced by Bando's first homer of the night.

After Detroit scored on May's sacrifice fly in the seventh, Bando crashed his third homer of the year. Cooper's fifth homer staked the Brewers to a 1-0 first inning lead. Jason Thompson homered for Detroit in the second. Winner Moose Haas, 3-1, who scattered six hits, has been the winning pitcher in three of the Brewers four victories since May 2. Ruhle has been the loser in two of those games.

MILWAUKEE (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers, powered by two solo homers by Sal Bandoand one by Cecil Cooper, posted their second victory in their last nine games by thrashing the Detroit Tigers 9-3 Friday night. The Brewers took a 4-1 lead with three second-inning runs. A double by Bando and singles by Money and Mike Hegan scored one and chased loser Vern Ruhle, 3-4. Larry Haney and Von Joshua followed with sacrifice flies. In the Milwaukee third, Cooper singled and Sixto Lezcano walked, both scoring on Don Money's double.

Reliever Dave Tomlin started the eighth with a 4-2 lead but walked pinch hitter Jerry Martin to lead off the inning. After Mike Schmidt flied out, Bob Boone singled Martin to second. Terry Harmon's single made it 4-3. Johnson batted for pitcher Ron Reed and rifled a single to center, scoring Boone, and when Richards booted the ball Harmon also came home with the winning run.

The Padres had gone ahead 2-1 in the second off starter Wayne Twitchell on a double by Dave Winfield, Doug Rader's RBI single and a run-scoring double by Mike Champion. San Diego kayoed Twitchell in the fourth when Rader singled, Champion walked and Bob Davis doubled home the Padres' third run. When Twitchell walked pitcher Rick Sawyer, he was relieved by Warren Brusstar, who worked out of the bases-loaded jam with two strikeouts. The Padres made it 4-1 in the fifth on singles by Winfield, Rader and Champion. NEW YORK (AP) Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn Friday supported National League President Chub Fee-ney's refusal to allow Atlanta Braves Owner Ted Turner to act as manager of his ball club.

After at least two telephone conversations with Turner, Kuhn issued a statement backing Fceney's decision based on Major League Rule 20E which prohibits cither manager or players of a club from holding stock or ownership in their teams. "I have been asked by the Braves to review yesterday's decision of President Feeney regarding Ted Turner," Kuhn said. "I'm satisfied that Mr. Feeney's disapproval of the Turner coach's contract should stand. Given Mr.

Turner's lack of familiarity with game operations, 1 do not think it is in the best interests of baseball to serve in the requested capacity" Turner had taken over his team in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, sending Manager Dave Bristol on a 10-day scouting trip. on Thursday. Records may be set only during qualifications or the race itself. Andretti, the 1969 winner who turned in a then-best speed of 200.311 Wednesday, will be 24th in line, also in a McLaren-Cos-worth. Tom Sneva, clocked on hand watches at 199.8 m.p.h. before brushing the wall Friday, will have the ninth qualifying spot, right behind Bobby Unser.

Unser, the Indy winner in 1968 and 1975, had been struggling all week but raised his top practice speed to 195.609 on Friday. Lloyd Ruby, never a winner but second only to Foyt in the number of Indy races started with 17, will be 20th in the qualification order, followed by rookies Todd Gibson and Miss Guthrie. Roger McCluskey will be 25th, followed by Clay Regaz-zoni, a veteran Grand Prix driver but a rookie at Indianapolis. Regazonni was the second-fastest rookie in practice at 191.693. Miss Guthrie's top speed was 191.073.

Teammates Wally Dallen-bach, the current U.S. Auto Club point leader, and 1973 winner Gordon Johncock, who went over 200 m.p.h. in tire tests last March, were far down the list in 32nd and 36th, respectively. The final spot among the 37 cars eligible for the pole run went to rookie Jerry Sneva, Tom's younger brother. Tom Sneva, meanwhile, was checked and released from the speedway hospital after his McLaren nicked the outside wall coming out of the fourth turn during practice.

Cardinals Top Braves 3-0 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Rookie Danny Ongais, a former drag racing and motorcycle champion from Hawaii, will have the first crack at the pole position Saturday in the first of four days of time trials for the May 29 Indianapolis 500-mile race. Three-time winner A.J. Foyt drew the No. 2 qualifying position, giving him the best shot at the first official 200-mile-per-hour lap during the advantageous morning hours, when cooler temperatures help boost speeds. Foyt was one of three drivers to crack the 200 barrier in practice, when speeds are unofficial.

But many of the other pole favorites were well down the list, and that could work against them as afternoon temperatures climb into the 80s, heating the track surface to well above 100 degrees. Ongais, 35, driving a Parnclli-Cosworth, was the fastest rookie in practice this week with a top speed of 195.185 miles per hour. He got the No. 1 qualifying spot in a blind draw conducted by Chief Steward Tom Binford. The 33 fastest cars, determined by the average speed on four laps around the 2'i-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, will start the 61st running of the world's richest automobile race, seeking shares of a purse that annually tops $1 million.

There were 42 cars on the track Friday in the final full day of practice before the 11 a.m. EST start of qualifications on Saturday. Friday's top practice laps were turned in by Foyt and former winner Mario Andretti and defending champion Johnny Rutherford, who also topped 200 m.p.h. in practice, and two-time Bobby Unser, who raised his best speed by four miles an hour. After Foyt, Sheldon Kinser got the No'3 qualifying draw, followed by George Snider, two-time winner Al Unser, Lee Kunzman, Johnny Parsons and Bobby Unser.

Janet Guthrie, trying for the second year to become the first woman in the Indy 500, will be 22th in the qualification order. If she fails Saturday or Sunday, she must decide by May 20 whether to attempt to qualify on the second weekend of time trials or run in the World 600 stock car race held the same day as the Indy 500. As long as a car remains in line, it is guaranteed a chance for the pole, even if there isn't enough time on the first day for everyone in the draw to get onto the track. Rutherford, a pole-position winner last year en route to his second Indy victory, drew the 29th spot in line in his primary ATLANTA (AP) Ken Reitz belted a three-run homer in the ninth inning and Bob Forsch yielded four hits in eight innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 triumph over the Atlanta Braves Friday night.

Reitz tagged rookie reliever Don Collins, 0-2, for his second home run of the season, a drive over the left field fence with one out. Hector Cruz led off the Cards' ninth with a walk. Lou Brock ran for him and promptly stole the 869th base of his career, leaving him only 23 behind Ty Cobb's major league baseball record. After Ted Simmons was walked intentionally, Brock was thrown out at third on a sacrifice attempt by Keith Hernandez. But Reitz then hit his home run, sending the Braves to another defeat just one day after they broke a 17-game losing streak.

Forsch, 6-1, struck out five and walked three. Jamie Easterly pitched eight shutout innings for the Braves, allowing only six hits while striking out five and walking two before leaving for a pinch hitter. It was Easterly's first start of the season after allowing 29 hits and 20 earned runs in 18 previous innings. "If you lose a million and a half dollars a year, you should be able to do what you want with a ball club," Turner said. "Am I crazy? Am I the only sane man or am I the only nut?" the controversial owner asked reporters.

Commenting on Kuhn's mention of his "lack of familiarity with game operations," Turner said, "How am I going to get the experience I need? "I've got a lot of players out there who don't have tons of experience either," he said, referring to the Braves' makeshift lineup the past few weeks after a number of starling players were injured. Turner said he thought his presence in the dugout had helped the team relax and play better baseball, cutting down on what he said were mental errors which had cost the Braves several games in their 17-loss string. Kuhn's decision leaves Vern Benson as acting manager for the Braves, and Turner said he didn't know when, or if, Bristol would rejoin the team. "I have to think about it," Turner said. "This is a great blow and I need a night to sleep on it." Tuner disagreed with Kuhn's contention that his actions are not "in the best interests of baseball," saying, "The guy in the stands can't figure this out." In Pittsburgh earlier this week, Turner said, "one of the janitors came up to me and said.

Polly Coen and Lisa Swick added two singles for the winners, while Shelly Axline and Julie Ansel each had two hits for the losers. Feeney barred Turner from managing and the team broke its losing streak, defeating the Pirates, 6-1.

A chagrined Turner said shortly before the Braves met the St. Louis Cardinals in Atlanta Friday night that he was surprised and disappointed in Kuhn's decision but indicated he would not fight it, at least not immediately. "One suit at a time," said Turner, who has appealed to federal court his suspension by Kuhn for "tampering" with San Francisco outfielder Gary Matthews prior to last fall's free agent draft. Petty Earns Pole Spot In Mason-Dixon DOVER, Del. (AP) Richard Petty won the pole position Friday for Sunday's Mason-Dixon 500 stock car race, but said the No.l spot doesn't necessarily mean good things are in store for his red-and-blue Dodge.

"I'll tell you better Sunday afternoon how the car's running," Petty said as he relaxed atop. his truck after a 136.033 mile-an-hour lap at Dover Downs International Speedway. "We just brought the car off the truck and it's been running ever since," said the winni-ngest Grand National driver in the history of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. "We'll have to make some adjustments for the race, though. Petty's qualifying speed was just off the track record for one lap, 136.612 ni set by David Pearson in May 1975.

Petty, who also turned in the fastest lap in Thursday's practice session at 136.364 will be flanked on the outside of the first row by Benny Parsons, the winner of last week's Music City USA 420 at Nashville, Tenn. Parsons, in a Chevrolet, clocked 135.941 m.p.h. Friday to win the second starting spot. The first and second grid positions were the only ones up for grabs Friday. The rest of the field will be determined Saturday.

The third best run of the day was turned in by Darrell Wal-trip, with a new engine in his Chevy, at 135.321. Pearson, a four-time winner at Dover Downs and the victor in the Western 500 at Riverside, this year, was fourth in a Mercury at 135.251. Petty has won two races so far this year, and notched the pole position for the Atlanta 500, one of his victories. That is why the decision on Alston," explained Paul.

"Frankly, if we have to depend on a player hitting .105 at Syracuse to enable us to beat an expansion club, with the kind of talent that has been provided, we are indeed in bad trouble." Paul called the reason for the two losses at Seattle "strictly a matter of too many errors in the field (6) and inconsistent pitching." At Anaheim, where the Yankees met the California Angels Friday night, Martin said: "I have no comment. I'll say the same thing to you as I've said to my press (New York writers). There was a misunderstanding. I have no comment on Gabe's comment for the best interests of the Yankees." At the same time, the Yankees filled a vacancy on their roster by recalling outfielder Dell Alston from Syracuse. Martin, angered over playing several games one man below the 25-player limit, had criticized Yankee management for delaying his requested recall of Hendricks after the club lost a game Wednesday night at Seattle. "The decision on the 25th player was delayed pending disposition of various negotiations with other clubs and examination of the players at Syracuse," said Paul.

"Certain comments directed at Mr. George Steinbrenner, the club's principal owner, by Manager Billy Martin concerning his (Steinbrenner's) alleged failure to add a 25th player are totally inaccurate and unfounded." Paul said the decision over which player to add had delayed filling the roster vacancy. "The facts of the matter are that the addition of the 25th player has been under consideration for several days," Paul continued.
