Of course they do. They say they don't, that all they want lo do Is stAy healthy and help the Yankees win the American Lea- gue pennant, Still, this Is a i ques- tion with fans, rival managers and even with Yankee team- mates closest to the slugging M-Men. Fans can't believe that Mantle and Maria are buddy-buddy but the best proot that they are can be gleaned from the fact that they share the same Long Is- land apartment i reserve outfielder Bob Corv.

The baseball writers traveling with the club have tried to i a hint ot Jealousy between the pair hut Ihcir keen observations (some call It snooping and pry- ing) have been to no avail, If the M-Men aren't buddy- buddy they certainly are mas' ters at deception. For Instance, when this writer walked into the Yankee Stadium dressing room two hours before a recent night game Mantle was silting at a table reading the story about the twin bill In which Marls blasted four home runs. Marls was standing be- hind the Switcher, rending the samo story over MM's shoulder. The story told about Babe Ruth's 60 home runs In 1027 and about the probability that when nnd if Mantle and Maris reach 50 home runs they coulc expect few good strikes am more walks. Mantle had no comment, "Bases on balls, hey," Marls said as he walked away with a Em He.

Later Maria was asked aboul his hat, 1C he had made anj change since 1960 when he hii hfs high of 39 homers. "Yes, I have changed he said. "In I960 I used ba 1 Fulmer Title Fight Is Off RENO, Nev. "You put me the spot. A guy would have be crazy to say he doesn't are it he hits more home runs ian somebody else." It has been written that when arls hit a recent home run nd Mantle shook his hand at ome plale (Mantle bats next), Mickey said "Nice going, you icky so-an-so," It has also been said by ankee official thnt when Maris rew a recent base on halls he urned around to Mantle ant! aid: "Hit one, Mick." These could he concoctions ol IB i Yankee publicity stafl eaded by Bob Flshel. Then gain they could be true.

But till you wonder because everj ome run means money, ant buys a lot of groceries nd fineries for the little wo- lan and her home.
