tonight, setting the stage for sunny skies Thursday and Friday. It will also be a little cooler, with highs both days in the 60s. The record high temperature for this date at the Columbus weather station was 88 degrees in 1942. The record low was 30 in 1978. National Rain dampened northern California and southern Oregon early today, while clouds blanketed most of the South and East.

A warming trend began to push temperatures well above normal in the Northeast. Much of the Midwest was clear, although rain fell on Chicago and St. Louis. In Mississippi and Louisiana, where 10 to 20 inches of rain have fallen since the weekend, the damp weather had given way to clouds and fog by early today. Dry weather was forecast there through Thursday.

Heavy rains triggered flooding that forced the evacuation of thousands of people across the two states earlier in the week. Most of the East Coast, from Maine to the northern tip of Florida, was cloudy early today, but a warm front spreading south from New England was expected to drive temperatures up into the 80s. Magruder Hospital on Tuesday. Judge dismisses lawsuit over player's suspension News Herald reports PORT CLINTON A $50,000 lawsuit filed against the Genoa public schools for the suspension of a player from the high school football team last season has been dismissed. The lawsuit was filed last October in Ottawa County Common Pleas Court by a Genoa couple, Randy and Adelina Volschow, on behalf of their son, Gregory. The civil action charged that on Sept. 24, 1990, district officials coerced Gregory into admitting that he had been drinking the day before with his friend and teammate, Peter Wilson.

Wilson had committed suicide on Sept. 23. Under Genoa's athletic code, consuming alcohol, tobacco, or drug is forbidden. The punishment for the first offense is expulsion from sports for the duration of the season, which is what happened to the young Volschow. A month after the expulsion, the Volschows filed suit, charging school officials with victimizing their son while he was still grieving over Wilson's suicide.

They demanded a letter of apology and $50,000 in punitive damages from the school board and several district employees. In his ruling Tuesday, Judge Paul C. Moon dismissed the lawsuit and ordered the Volschows to pay the costs of the action. "The plaintiff's (Volschow's) complaint is motivated, unfortunately, by two great myths of our society: (1) that high school football is or even should be an integral part of the education ex- perience; (2) that for every slight or hurt there is a monetary reward," the judge wrote. "While the manner in which Greg was dismissed from the football team and the timing of that dismissal following the suicide of his friend was inartfully, or perhaps even cruelly done on the part of the coach, Greg's leaving the team was not actionable, nor was his continued presence on the team a protected right.

"Life is difficult, and not every hurt can be made right by the courts," Moon concluded. tirement and insurance. After Miller's resignation, commissioners decided to contract with someone to provide litter coordination services. That means Redfern will be paid a specified amount which does not include benefits. The job pays about $19,300 annually.

Redfern, contacted at his Bowling Green home Tuesday evening, did not want to make any comments regarding the job until he could confirm the hiring with county officials. Redfern is familiar with the county litter program through his employment with WSOS Community Action Commission Employment Training. He has worked for the nonprofit organization since May 1988, first as special projects coordinator and then in a threefold capacity as program coordinator, youth recruiter and community liaison. WSOS has provided people for litter cleanup along roads in the county for the past several years. Redfern received his bachelor's degree in arts and political science from Bowling Green State University.

In May 1991, he is expected to earn his master's degree. NEWS HERALD (USPS 386-100) MAY 1, 1991 124th Year Vol. 275 DAILY NEWS, 1865 PORT CLINTON HERALD, 1867 Merged 1969 Published daily except Sundays by: GANNETT SATELLITE INFORMATION NETWORK, INC. 115 W. Second St.
