"Then we kept turning that sucker over. After a while, it got out of control.

We're better than we played, I promise you that. We'll come back fighting." The Saints, who had not been blanked since 1983, avoided a shutout with 1:48 remaining when Buck threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Floyd Turner. The extra point allowed Morten Andersen to extend his consecutive game scoring streak to 152 games. The victory was the fourth straight for the 49ers (7-3), who took a one-game lead over the faltering Saints. New Orleans, which started 5-0, including a 16-13 victory over San Francisco, has seen its two-game advantage rubbed out by losing four of its last five games.

"A lot of people were counting us out, so it feels good to come out and play a game like that," Rice said. "People are going to jump on the bandwagon, but if we go down there and lose to the Rams (next week), they're going to jump off. One thing about this team, I think we've matured a lot and we're starting to peak at the right time." Young ran for a touchdown and threw scoring passes of 22 yards to John Taylor and yards and -14 yards to Rice as the 49ers racked up 40 or more points for the third straight game. Young completed 14 of 21 passes for 205 yards. Wilson was 6 of 15 for 46 yards, with three interceptions.

The 49ers roughed up Wilson, sacking him four times and intercepting him three times. Buck couldn't do much better his first series ended with Eric Davis coming up with the 49ers' fourth interception. "We moved the ball well at times but then we turned it over and that'll kill you every time," Saints receiver Quinn Early said. "What we have to do now is hang together. People are going to be down on us.

The fans and media are going to be down on us but we have to stick together as a team and not point any fingers." Hanks, named the starter at free safety over Dana Hall two weeks ago, ignited the rout when he stepped in front of Eric Martin and intercepted Wilson. He stumbled, got to his feet, found room down the left sideline and then cut back to the middle to go in for his first defensive touchdown and the fourth by the unit this year. "It's been a perfect evening for me," Hanks said. "I was going to run even if I was touched. I was going to make the referees make the call.

I was just flat running scared. I didn't want to get caught from behind." Larry Bird returned to the Hartford Civic Center on Monday night, where his No. 33 was raised to the rafters along with the numbers of five other Boston Celtic greats.

Bird, whose tribute came at halftime of the Pacers-Celtics game, thanked the cheering fans for their support during his 13-year career and assured them his retirement is permanent. "I would never play basketball again, unless it was out here just snooting around," he said. Bird played 35 games at the Civic Center between 1980 and 1992. Boston was 31-9 during his era, with Bird missing five games, including two losses. During Monday night's ceremony, which was postponed last year because he underwent back surgery, Bird received a key to the city.

He said a few words to the fans before a video tribute was shown and a commemorative banner was unfurled with the numbers of former Celtics who played at the Civic Center since 1974 and have had their numbers retired in Boston. Bird and Johnson raised the Celtic banner with Bird's No. 33, Johnson's No. 3 and the numbers of Jo Jo White (10), John Havlicek (17), Dave Cowens (18) and Don Nelson (19). Space was left for Kevin McHale (32) and the late Reggie Lewis (35).

terback coach, in charge of the offense for the first time. The result: Klingler completed a season-high 22 throws out of 31 for 1 yards, his second-highest yardage total of the season. Although the Bengals lost 17-12, coach Dave Shula liked the way Klingler responded to Anderson's play selection. Anderson, a former Bengals quarterback in his first year as a coach, will call plays the rest of the season instead of first-year offensive coordinator Mike Pope. "I felt that maybe we could get a little spark by having Kenny call the plays," Shula said Monday.

"He's spent so much time with the quarterbacks, especially having Dave back in the lineup. When those two are on the same page, it can make it that much more comfortable for everybody else that's out there." Anderson and Klingler have vastly different styles. Klingler has never been a pocket passer, preferring to move around before throwing. Anderson set virtually all of the Bengals' passing records by dropping back and making high-percentage throws. But Klingler adapted well to Anderson's play calling.

The Bengals went to high-percentage completions against the Jets running backs Harold Green and Derrick Fenner had 9 catches for 70 yards.
